Kenya Bishops slam Melinda Gates’ contraception plan for Africa

52

The Catholic Bishops of Kenya have collectively slammed a pro-contraception article that appeared in the country’s Africa Review earlier this month as “dangerous” saying that it could “lead to destruction of the human society and by extension the human race.”

“We cannot allow our country to be part of an international agenda, driven by foreign funds and by so doing, losing our independence and our African values of the family and society,” wrote John Cardinal Njue, chairman of the Kenya Episcopal Conference of Bishops in a letter titled Let us Uphold Human Dignity.

The article that the Bishops wrote against, titled “Kenya joins global birth control push”, mentioned that Kenya is among the countries that have “signed up to a new $4.2 billion (Sh356 billion) drive to promote family planning services”, adding that leaders of more than 20 developing countries made “bold commitments” to address “financing and delivery barriers” that women face who seek contraceptive services and supplies.

The article also mentioned that Planning minister Wycliffe Oparanya attended a summit in the U.K. as part of the World Population Day where the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, co-hosts of the event, “underscored the importance of access to contraceptives as both a right and a transformational health and development priority.”

But the country’s Catholic Bishops made it clear that they would have nothing to do with the “artificial family planning programme” by “foreign forces”.

“[T]he use of contraceptives […] is both dehumanizing and goes against the teaching of the church, especially in a country like Kenya where a majority of the people are Christians and God fearing. It already threatens the moral fabric of the society and is an insult to the dignity and integrity of the human person.”

  1. The very large contraceptive this bishop stretches over people heads when he demands they fear his god is the one that needs banning! Saying he knows all about some alien mind  and everyone  better “listen up” is the biggest Durex to thinking ever invented.

He wants you to do as he wants, think as he wants, live as he wants and think him the “dogs bollocks” for doing so! He is one in a long line of individuals who have got power from this “Contraceptive High Ground”. Prick his bubble and get a life of your own!

  2. Judging from the comments on the website, there doesn’t seem to be much hope for this effort to succeed.  Most comments are personal attacks on Melinda Gates – I suppose they can’t see past their own silly one-sided views.

  3. “We cannot allow our country to be part of an international agenda, driven by foreign funds and by so doing, losing our independence and our African values of the family and society,” wrote John Cardinal Njue.

    African values – catholicism ????????

    Foreign articifical family planning?  BAD!

Family planning by starvation – GOOD!  (Its god’s cosmic plan)

  4. “We cannot allow our country to be part of an international agenda,
driven by foreign funds and by so doing, losing our independence and our
African values of the family and society,”

A ROMAN Catholic Bishop wrote that?

Spoing, there goes another irony meter.

  5. This is priceless, contraception/family planning is “dangerous” and could “lead to destruction of the human society and by extension the human race.”  This man is so full of sh*t with his overhyped dramatics, God forbid people start thinking for themselves and make their own decisions as adults instead of being told (sorry I mean ‘guided’) what to do.

It’s funny but whenever I hear or read a pronouncement by a religious figure regarding morality, honor or “Let us Uphold Human Dignity” I immediately think who said or did something to cause this child to throw a fit.

We, the grown ups, need to continue putting these people in their box and kindly inform, sometimes reinform, them that their beliefs (insert myth here) are not something they can force on others.

  6. “But the country’s Catholic Bishops made it clear that they would have nothing to do with the “artificial family planning programme” by “foreign forces”.”
What about “foreign forces” like the catholic church and the pope?

  7. As a Doctor I can point out that “Vatican” Roulette” has always been considered highly unreliable. In some countries it is considered more effective to practice anal, instead of vaginal sex. Does this, in your opinion contribute more to “human dignity” than using safe barrier methods like condoms?–or is male on female sodomy not a “sin”?

  8.   “[T]he use of contraceptives […] is both dehumanizing and goes against
the teaching of the church, especially in a country like Kenya where a majority of the people are Christians and God fearing. It already threatens the moral fabric of the society and is an insult to the dignity and integrity of the human person.”

..and I thought it was Catholic bishops which threatened the moral fabric of society and were an an insult to the dignity and integrity of the human person.  – Theist mirror psychological projection from them again! – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P

The Catholic Bishops of Kenya have collectively slammed a pro-contraception article that appeared in the country’s Africa Review earlier this month as “dangerous” saying that it could “lead to destruction of the Catholic dominance and by extension their human ignorance.”

There – That’s identified their REAL fears, with only four words changed!

“We cannot allow our country to be part of an international agenda, driven by foreign funds and by so doing, losing our independence and our African values of the family and society,” wrote John Cardinal Njue,

The Kenyans should have thought of that before they let the Vatican take over their minds!

  9. Amazing how the faith virus convinces Africans (in this case) to spurn generosity, to bite the hand that’s trying to help them. Hopefully the Kenyan Government will tell the virgins in frocks to get back in their boxes and shut up. I note many of the objections are racist, castigating Melinda as “an interfering white woman”

  10. How crazy is it that a Bishop from the Holy Roman Empire is saying that Westerners have no right to butt into their society. You have already been butted. No pun intended for any Catholics out there.

  11. Galeotti suggested that Gates must be unaware of the reliability of
existing family planning methods that are entirely natural, such as the
Billings Ovulation Method, which is not only moral in the mind of the
Catholic Church, but is also completely free in that in involves no
    plastics or costly drugs.

That method involves checking your own cervical mucus.  What was that about “dignity” again?

  12. Now I truly understand the meaning of the word ‘outrageous’ because after reading this article I am outraged! To willfully perpetuate and even glorify the dreadful situation the women and children are in, how dare they! Simply the absence of decent contraception puts these women and their children at a disadvantage in an already hazardous environment which the poverty and famine stricken East-African region continues to be. Borderline disheartening.

  13. Finally! I was just waiting for something like this to happen to shake Melinda Gates’ unthinking adherence to this disgusting catholic superstition and labeling herself as such(“practicing catholic”).

Perhaps she will now realize where the problem in Africa really lies.

  14. Catholics do not actually care about what really causes human suffering. They seem to be able to say literally ANYTHING is immoral. They could convince their masses that dandelion’s are evil, not caring whether that is even true our not. How the hell do we combat against that.

  15. But the country’s Catholic Bishops made it clear that they would have nothing to do with the “artificial family planning programme” by “foreign forces”.
Don’t you just love it:  “foreign forces”?  As though the catholic church is indigenous to africa!

  16. “This of course demands discipline through abstinence, which is a necessary value in married life. This should not be rubbished as impossible,” they wrote

Writes a bunch of clowns in nighties who have never been married.

With others, here, I hope this lets more scales fall from Melinda’s eyes and she walks away from the whole criminal organization.

  17. In addition, when most natural family planning methods are used to prevent pregnancy they rely on abstaining from intercourse during that time of the month when women are most physically and psychologically amenable to it.  What could be more natural than that?

  18. “We cannot allow our country to be part of an international agenda, driven by foreign funds …”I guess that does not apply to the funds provided by debt and disaster relief, charity, and all the rest.Oh, the hypocrisy of it all. Par for the course, of course, for the RC. Melinda Gates could make her best move yet by publicly leaving that cult.

  19. That’s because they actually have a pretty sick attitude towards suffering.  To suffer is to imitate Christ on the Cross.  This is a Good Thing.  In any case the only suffering that counts is eternal torment in hell.  What’s a little earthly suffering if you avoid suffering for all eternity.

    Michael

  20. I always marvel at the fact that the religion of the slavers and colonizers is nowhere as strong as it is in Africa.  One wonders if the Africans would agree that slavers and colonizers were perhaps justified in doing what they did, if at the end of the day it lead to the spreading of the gospel in these regions.

  21. I always find it hard to believe that Catholics can see contraceptives as unnatural and going against God while it’s perfectly okay to plan your sex around times of the month in which she is not likely to get pregnant.  They only differ in reliability certainly not intent.  Clearly they’ve not seen the meaning of Life.  “Couldn’t you get your balls cut off in an accident?  No son, God would see right through that, what you do to yourself you do to him.”

  22.  Just imagine how ignorant, spineless and ineffectual Bill Gates must be to still have a catholic wife after decades of marriage. People have quit this cult after reading a book or watching youtube videos.

How can he even respect her…

  23. “We cannot allow our country to be part of an international agenda, driven by foreign funds and by so doing, losing our independence and our African values of the family and society,”
You have to laugh when yet another African country that greedily accepts ‘Western Aid’ says it cannot allow something that is ‘driven by foriegn funds’! Their whole ecomony is driven by foreign funds!!!!

  24. “We cannot allow our country to be part of an international agenda,
driven by foreign funds and by so doing, losing our independence and our
African values of the family and society,”

You could say that about Catholicism in Africa

  25. Some of the comments on this thread are focusing on Melinda Gates’s Catholicism, as though it made much of a difference to what she’s trying to do in Africa. She clearly isn’t motivated in her actions here by any Catholic ideology or dogma; quite the opposite in fact.

So if through her efforts and her and her husband’s vast wealth she manages to aid in slowing the spread of HIV and AIDS in that continent, give women a measure of control over their own bodies, and generally make life better for everyone, then I for one don’t care if she’s Catholic, Hindu or a member of that cargo cult that worships Phil the Greek as a deity.

Her Catholicism in fact could even be an advantage: imagine the reaction of these paranoid-sounding bishops in Kenya and elsewhere if Mrs Gates were Jewish. The fact that she’s one of their own and is familiar with the jargon and the rituals and the Catholic mindset may help to persuade some of them that she isn’t in fact the enemy.

Many of us outside the Matrix of religion, that is to say those of us who chose the red pill, are sometimes so hostile to religion that we fail to acknowledge the good things people who were raised to believe in a god are capable of doing. It’s a bad habit, and awfully similar to the line many theists take: that all non-believers are inherently incapable of behaving morally.

  26. I notice he isn’t campaigning against an introduced Western religion (Christianity) or the introduction of Western medical care, or in favour of the African tradition of living in mud huts without power or running water.   I guess certain primitive traditions are considered acceptable while others aren’t.   How many more millions will die of preventable diseases before his repugnant and vastly damaging belief system is swept away?   The day cannot come soon enough

  27. One of the many uneducated irrational men of faith, as an African i think some of our problems can be solved by having smaller families… this is a slap in the face for all those people who give aid to help poor people( f*ck your solutions just give us the money). This Pharisee is clearly defending a religious view and hidding behind “African values”.  If he love Africa he must speak out against the people who are killing our people like those  Christian Right loonies who tell people that condoms are not 100% , masturbation is a sin and abstinance( like the Catholic Paedo-Prists) is the only way.

Since 2009, Uganda Politicians Have Been Seeking Death Penalty For Gays – “In Uganda, politicians have been seeking since 2009 to institute a strikingly nasty piece of legislation: the death penalty for “aggravated homosexuality” (being homosexual more than once) and, in a totalitarian touch, penalties for teachers, doctors and even parents who suspected that someone in their care was gay but didn’t report them.” ~ Gay rights: a world of inequality – Gay people still live in fear in many countries around the world – prejudice, torture and execution are common. 9/11/2011 http://tinyurl.com/5vqj9nq

  29. The death penalty for “being gay more than once”? What the hell does that even mean??

“no no, I swear, i’ve been gay all my life!… i was just pretending to not be gay that one time!!!”

holy SHIT you couldn’t make it up!!!

  30. The death penalty for “being gay more than once”? What the hell does that even mean??

Presumably they intended: “engaging in homosexual intercourse over multiple occasions.”

Because, apparently, doing it once could have been by accident.  Or something.

  31. Wait a minute friends. From an evolutionary perspective, aren’t these African Catholics the smart ones, and the non-fecund secular Westerners the fools? How exactly does promotion of birth control, abortion, homosexuality, etc. enhance your power or further your agenda? Won’t you simply go extinct and be replaced by more fecund and religious populations? This is the paradox at the heart of your ideology that baffles me. If you are going speak of humans as animals engaged in an evolutionary struggle, shouldn’t you, of all people, be playing to win?

  32. What on earth is “natural” contraception vs “artificial” contraception? What could be more artificial than sexual abstinence? Isn’t it also artificial for a woman to decide to have sex when she knows she is not fertile? Either a contraception method works or doesn’t work. That’s how these drug-free and plastic-free methods generally differ from condoms, pills, injections and the like.

Meanwhile, the clowns’ counterparts in the Philippines have resorted to blackmailing politicians who will vote for the passage of a reproductive health bill (which provisions sex education and access to contraception, among others) in the congress.

  33. @rdfrs-fca2be91005aa4588e1eda6be77ff51f:disqus

You seem to have forgotten the “natural” population controls which are well known throughout Africa where human population restraint is absent!  …..   Fatal or disabling diseases , famine, starvation, desertification of land, destruction of agricultural potential, tribal warfare over diminishing resources, mass refugee exoduses etc!

  34. Hail bloody Mary! The Pope says “No”, so stop all that naughty stuff right now! These RCC bishops are a walking joke. Bring on more of them, in fact let’s hope that Holy Joe’s successor is an African! These characters are the RCC’s best self destruct weapons.

Now what exactly is “wrong” with artificial contraception? Or must this deep theological question forever remain a mystery?

  35. As someone who has travelled through Africa I can tell you it’s a cross between a black comedy and a surrealistic nightmare.
There’s a propensity in 4th world countries to produce as many children as possible with the prospect
of starvation never on their horizon.
Melinda and Bill Gates have taken on the noble role of philanthropists( the apotheosis of morality)to help fund research into disease(e.g Malaria) and help create a more worthwhile life for people at the bottom of the heap .
Some catholic bishops deserve a daily flogging for trying to impose their idiotic dogma on sad simple
    people .
There was some Scottish bishop anal aperture who condemned embryonic stem cell research.

  36. Of course the catholics in Kenya do not want contraception as it removes the opportunity for more children who would grow up indoctrinated in their lunatic ways.  The more kids that are born per household the less likely they are going to grow up educated and willing to challenge this catholic horseshit.

  37. agenda? ideology? wtf are you on about? those of us who choose human rights over dogma are not trying to win some imaginary evolutionary war, you know. if the “agenda” was to outpopulate then yest we’d be doing it all wrong. luckily the very intelligence that has lifted some of us out of religion which is, after all a clever little twist of evolution casued by an animal evolved with tribe mentality that is trying to adjest to living in super-tibal communities.

most atheists’ agenda is to ease suffering, war, poverty and maybe bring the population into some level of responsibility for managing the planet’s resources. against a bunch of hateful devisive god-botherers of course they stand less chance in an evolutionary war.

the human race as it exists today will come to an end. they may all go extinct or maybe the descendents of the religious faction of humanity will evolve into something that can survive the coming changes to the planet and revert to the feral self-serving animals they evolved from since the intelligence that brought their ancestors to prominence will become an expensive vestigal phenotype no longer required. although they may hold on to language long enough to tell stories of how their ancestors wiped out the nerdy atheists but to be honest, my agenda is more of a “one generation at a time”.

as a cat i’m less worried though, atheist humans can be difficult to train so descendents of my generation would probably appreciate the descendents of yours

  38. The world is a war my friend. This is the first lesson evolutionary biology teaches us, and you are not exempt. If smart atheists can be so easily outcompeted by these primitive religionists, then I must question your claim to superior reason and intelligence. What good is your reason if it is making you extinct? You CANNOT escape the struggle for power, though like many modern atheists you sound like a rather broken man who has already surrendered. You seem to have internalized a lot of Judeo-Christian “secular humanist” thinking which has no basis in nature. “Ease suffering, war, and poverty”? Why should anyone care about such things? This world rewards superior POWER, not superior compassion. Wake up! Break the spell the slave religions have cast upon your mind! Seek POWER! POWER! POWER!

  39. Anal heterosexual sex was something I was unaware of until relatively recently.
An American friend of mine who lived in Istambul told me this was a common practice amongst
Muslim women to preserve their “virginity”(and also be contraceptive).
The mind boggles at such measures to preserve perverted faith.
