The castaway in Desert Island Discs this week is the biologist Dr Richard Dawkins. Author of popular science books such as The Selfish Gene and The Blind Watchmaker, he’ll be talking to Sue Lawley about his scientific beliefs which are firmly rooted in the conviction that Darwin’s theory of evolution provides the starting point for all we need to know about our world. He’ll be discussing the implications of his theories, as well as choosing eight records for his island exile.

  1. “…his scientific beliefs which are firmly rooted in the conviction that Darwin’s theory of evolution provides the starting point for all we need to know about our world.”

    Really?  C’mon!  They aren’t beliefs we’re talking about; they’re understandings of facts and theories.  And to say that evolution is a starting point for all we need to know about our world is just poor language usage (or understanding of scientific principles).  Well, I suppose that’s my gripe for the day.  Not really a criticism, just a sigh.

  2. Dang. I wanted to hear what Richard would say when given the bible as a freebie for the island, but Ms Lawley didn’t mention it. He’s said in the past that he acknowledges its importance as one of the roots of literature, but I wanted to hear what he thought about the fact that it is one of the “given” books for all desert islanders. Richard?

  3. Of course these days there are tree huggers everywhere.

    Back then, we British were slightly more reserved in our affection for trees.

    Slightly embarrassed concern was the rule of the day, as can be observed from the photograph.

    Anvil.

    Totally agree, I think this is one of the most important distinctions, we DON’T have beliefs we have knowledge  and understanding. So weak, I always correct that kind of lazy talk.

  5. Perhaps Prof Dawkins is contemplating the song ‘Trees’.
    btw, congrats to Rush!

    The natural design on my door resembles a hybrid of a tree and male fertility god;
    it ain’t no virgin mary image ;)
