Pope Benedict denounces gay marriage during his annual Christmas message

73

The Pope sent a clear message to gay rights activists who are celebrating gains made this year — the Vatican still thinks same-sex marriage is a ‘manipulation of nature.’

Pope Benedict used his annual Christmas message to denounce gay marriage, saying that it destroyed the “essence of the human creature.”

In one of his most important speeches of the year, the Pope stressed that a person’s gender identity is God-given and unchangeable. As a result, he sees gay marriage as a “manipulation of nature.”

“People dispute the idea that they have a nature, given to them by their bodily identity, that serves as a defining element of the human being,” he said at the Vatican on Friday. “They deny their nature and decide that it is not something previously given to them, but that they make it for themselves.”

The Pope has said that gay marriage, like abortion and euthanasia, is a threat to world peace.

  1. Popey really has no idea and he clearly fails to see he’s flogging a dead horse. His main “point” seem to be the “against nature” mantra while at the same time professing faith in the supernatural.
I think this latest outburst is good news, surely all but the most ignorant will see what a silly old man he is …. on the dark side of course is the reality of anti gay violence and other assorted nasties being practiced in catholic strongholds in Africa that this idiot is encouraging.

  2. The Pope has said that gay marriage, like abortion and euthanasia, is a threat to world peace.

Gosh, I didn’t realise that all the wars in the world were a result of two men or women loving each other.

    Makes perfect sense now.

  3. Judging by the picture above, all it takes is a silly dress, a somewhat pointy hat, some (thousands) of hangers on wearing similarly silly costumes, a few mysterious ramblings in a language few people understand, a dodgy name with pretensions to loftiness, decades long list of equally suspect predecessors, and the ability to maintain wide-open arms held thus (see image above) and voila: millions of souls stand enthralled. Of course, this is all in aid of an invisible yet all powerful but mysterious being who has an adversary, an old employee of his, that is after your soul.

Is there really no hope for so many parts of the human family?

  4. Headline!!

‘Shock horror as Pope unexpectedly expresses opposition to gay marriage and choice for women in Christmas message’

“Didn’t see that coming!” Remarked says Vatican insiders.

“It’s an outrage! Next thing you know his holiness will apologise to the victims of clerical child abuse! It’s completely unthinkable!” said God in a rare appearance at a Tea Party rally.

  5. “People dispute the idea that they have a nature, given to them by their bodily identity, that serves as a defining element of the human being,” he said at the Vatican on Friday. “They deny their nature and decide that it is not something previously given to them, but that they make it for themselves.”

Is it me or is this statement unnecessarily wooly and nonsensical? Is human nature here given to people by their ‘bodily identity’?? Further on in the statement, people’s nature again is given to them, this time, presumably by God, not by their ‘bodily identity’ this time. Which one is it then – ‘bodily identity’ or God that gives us our nature?
All the wars, killings and unhappiness over the centuries could have been avoided if people only had realised sooner that all this time it was our own ‘bodily identity’ that created us, and not God.
The only clarity (and truth) that, unwittingly, exists in this passage, comes at the very end when it is stated that: “…but that they make it for themselves”. Now, that is something I can agree with wholeheartedly.

What feckin’ world peace is the cretinous old goatskin on about? Talk about not living in the real world FFS!

  7. Mmm..’ against nature’ he says. I suppose his celibacy is quite natural…..of couse he will argue that his control of his sexual urges shows the extent of his committment to his god. Thats if you believe him of course! My cynical view is that the RC is a cleverly designed institution to protect those who are social and sexual deviants….now days homosexuality isn’t regarded as quite as deviant as it used to be in civilized communities …one of these days it won’t be necessary for the church to provide refuge for them at all as they’ll be safe in normal society. It will continue to exist to protect paedophiles because it is unlikely that normal society will ever accept that. What better way is there to deflect scrutiny than to protest loudly against your own sexual obsessions. [by the way, the Jimmy Saville type investigations must be sending shivers up many RC spines...confessions will no longer save those who sexually abused others and who think that they are safe! ]

  8. From a rational perspective it is very hard to see how any of these things can possibly cause a war. On the other hand, religion and religious hatred has been an easily identifiable cause of most the wars throughout human history.

Religion has always been very good at encouraging otherwise perfectly rational people to do things to complete strangers which they would never tolerate being done to their friends and neighbours.

  9. Further to my other comment, its also rather difficult to take a condemnation of homosexuality seriously when its coming from an old man in a dress who openly admits to loving another man (who has been dead for 2000 years)

  10. First of all, Merry Christmas everybody.

Secondly, the Pope is full of it.

And now I’m going to have a nice brunch with my family, including my gay cousin, a few couples living in sin, most using contraception, an aunt whose life was saved by an abortion and a handful of Pagans.

  11. His Joeliness says:

Pope Benedict used his annual Christmas message to denounce gay marriage, saying that it destroyed the “essence of the human creature.”

Jeez these “sophisticated” Christians really do come out with some howlers ! What the hell is the “essence of the human creature” anyway ? A typical piece of mystical theospeak, that means nothing but sounds impressive. Of course ask a priest to define anything and he will run a mile, creating a smokescreen of Bible black proportions. Holy Joe’s remarks remind me of Cardinal Murphy-O’ Connor’s equally stupid remark about atheists being something “less than human”.

Following their own logic, Jesus created the universe, and is in charge. God carries out the most abortions, and also creates gay people, he also does nothig about man made wars and other disasters, but occasionally He will make a statue weep sewage water, and lift two girls out of their wheelchairs, and other “miracles” just to remind us He’s there !

Well as far as I’m concerned the Pope is El Idiota !

Hah ! No-one expects the Spanish Preposition !

  12. ‘same-sex marriage is a ‘manipulation of nature.’’

Marriage in general is nature manipulation. Pope needs to go home on focus on himself! His god fantasies intended to control and manipulate are getting really old!

I’m not defending the pope in any way but I’ve just read the text of his Christmas message and I can’t find the reference to gay marriage at all.

I think that text reflects a message given in a public address. His comments about gay marriage were in a message for Vatican officials. (Reuters article)

    Thank you. :)

  16. Ex- Nazi member of a male-only, dress wearing cult of celibate misogynists makes a comment in which he blames gays, abortions and euthanasia as a major threat to world peace. Oh, there`s a shocker!!

  17. How about: “Look, I can stand up with only my imaginary friend for support”

In reply to #4 by OHooligan:

Is this a caption competition?: How about:

“Look, I CAN stand up without holding onto anything.” (Though the minder in black doesn’t seem so sure).

  18. It is true that both abstinence and homosexual actually bore no offspring however homosexual provide comfort for those individuals who exercise their natural instinct whereas the abstinence cruelly stifle their natural instinct and they’re the real culprits who are against the nature.

  19. What could be more heterosexual than wearing red Prada slippers and a darling white dress, while living an entire lifetime among men who joined you in making a youthful vow to never-ever-ever participate in heterosexual sex?

  20. The Pope sent a clear message to gay rights activists who are celebrating gains made this year — the Vatican still thinks same-sex marriage is a ‘manipulation of nature.’

Given the level of the Vatican’s understanding of “Natural Sciences” over the years, does any educated person take their pronouncements on “Nature”seriously?

The Vatican also has no monopoly on marriage, so apart from in the minds of a few confused Catholics – does this matter in any civilised countries which are not dominated by theocracy?

  21. I think it’s good that Churches are being polarised by such issues. It is important that they keep themselves in the corner of what The Bible actually says. Then it’s easier to demonstrate just how ‘out-there’ the whole thing is.

  22. Is it just me, or does Ratface remind you of Emperor Palpatine’s (more) evil twin brother?

    Emperor Popatine perhaps?

Seriously, though, the hypocrisy of a church that believes two men who love each other and want to make a formal commitment, or a woman wanting to use contraception to prevent pregnancy or HIV (for her and the child), is more sinful than priests raping young boys all over the world, is beyond belief.

Which is probably why the majority of the 2 billion plus supposed Roman Catholics on this planet are themselves beyond belief in this monstrous, disgusting, dangerous, bronze age zombie death cult.

    Merry Christmas everyone! :-)

  23. Annoyingly, you can’t seem to edit these messages…

What I meant in my last post was that the majority of Catholics don’t actually believe the bile that Ratface spouts (and certainly don’t live according to his retarded rules), yet still claim to be members of his gang…

Not sure what is worse, really…

Pope Palpatine. “Something something, gay people. Something something, dark side!”

Merry Xmas to you too :-)

Its all there on the Vatican website. maybe you are reading a shortened version? It occupies about a third of the speech and starts with “The Chief Rabbi of France, Gilles Bernheim, has shown in a very detailed and profoundly moving study that the attack we are currently experiencing on the true structure of the family, made up of father, mother, and child, goes much deeper. While up to now we regarded a false understanding of the nature of human freedom as one cause of the crisis of the family, it is now becoming clear that the very notion of being – of what being human really means – is being called into question.”

If you look at the demographics of Catholicism and recent polls performed worldwide I think it is inevitable that this attempt to impose theological dogma on an issue of human rights will back fire and drive more and more young people away from his clutches.

    One of a long line!

    Misanthropic ignorant parasite.
If we look at the inane mental ramblings of his predecessors, there some insight into the brain fumblings of “theistic reasoning”!

    Pope Pius IX

.. … .. Pope Pius IX, who defined dogmatically papal infallibility during the First Vatican Council in 1869–70. The council has a section on “Faith and Reason” that includes the following on science and faith:

"9. Hence all faithful Christians are forbidden to defend as the legitimate conclusions of science those opinions which are known to be contrary to the doctrine of faith, particularly if they have been condemned by the Church; and furthermore they are absolutely bound to hold them to be errors which wear the deceptive appearance of truth." (Vatican Council I)

"10. Not only can faith and reason never be at odds with one another but they mutually support each other, for on the one hand right reason established the foundations of the faith and, illuminated by its light, develops the science of divine things; on the other hand, faith delivers reason from errors and protects it and furnishes it with knowledge of many kinds." (Vatican Council I)

On God the Creator, the Vatican Council was very clear. The definitions preceding the “anathema” (as a technical term of Catholic theology, let him be “cut off” or excommunicated, cf. Galatians 1:6–9; Titus 3:10–11; Matthew 18:15–17) signify an infallible doctrine of the Catholic Faith (De Fide):

On God the creator of all things
If anyone denies the one true God, creator and lord of things visible and invisible: let him be anathema.
If anyone is so bold as to assert that there exists nothing besides matter: let him be anathema.
If anyone says that the substance or essence of God and that of all things are one and the same: let him be anathema.
If anyone says that finite things, both corporal and spiritual, or at any rate, spiritual, emanated from the divine substance; or that the divine essence, by the manifestation and evolution of itself becomes all things or, finally, that God is a universal or indefinite being which by self determination establishes the totality of things distinct in genera, species and individuals: let him be anathema.
If anyone does not confess that the world and all things which are contained in it, both spiritual and material, were produced, according to their whole substance, out of nothing by God; or holds that God did not create by his will free from all necessity, but as necessarily as he necessarily loves himself; or denies that the world was created for the glory of God: let him be anathema.

  29. Pity the old fraud didn’t denounce paedophile Catholic priests when he was the ‘fixit’ man who fixed and suppressed the news of Paedophile priests for his predecessor. Maybe he got to be the new pope for ‘services rendered.’

Yes Alan, I also see the predator/prey relationship within parasitism mirrored by theological innoculations of this sort. Those who pray become prey, augmenting the dispersal of their dependant organism.

  31. How ironic. This nutty old man in a dress who condemns gay marriage has been living with his “private secretary” (wink, wink) Georg Ganswein, aka Gorgeous Georg for decades. It wouldn’t surprise me if the two tied the knot in a private ceremony deep in the bowels of Vatican City. But whether married or not the two were born to shop — they have been photographed wearing matching pairs of $300 walking shoes from Mephisto. http://thewildreed.blogspot.com/2010/08/benedict-and-georg.html

Assuming you are right, then guilty as charged – but there are people in this world who think that way, so hopefully you can forgive me…

  33. Continual proof of the sheer stupidity of this dopey pope that he thinks that his words mean anything to those who do not follow his nonsensical bullshit and that when you study them they turn out to be the ramblings of a man stuck in the 19th century.

  34. What of covering up the rape and torture of deaf/mute children in Milwaukee, Wisconsin? I guess that’s okay with Joseph Ratzinger (I refuse to call him by his superhero alias). I don’t believe there was gay marriage when Ratzinger was serving in Hitler Youth, but there was plenty of war to be had then and the years before it. What was the issue then.

According to Ratzinger’s god, humans are meant to “be fruitful and multiply,” so how does being a virgin comport with the natural order. The desire to have sex is an instinct and by being virgins, the men and women in this filthy institution are “deny[ing] their nature.” The RCC’s hypocrisy and immorality knows no limits. If any god, let alone a just one, existed, s/he would level the Vatican into a heap of dust. That it is allowed to exist in all of its gilded and grime splendor is further proof no such entity exists.

  36. If the Pope were really trying to be true to biblical teachings, he would be going after divorcees and adulterers who far out-number gay people. He would be going after liars and thieves. And, he would stop protecting pedophiles. Instead, like a pathetic coward, he targets a vulnerable minority that does not even have equal rights. If he were a real man, he would go after Jews and Muslims too, for rejecting Jesus Christ. What a cowardly and bigoted old fool.

  37. Some specialists linked to psychology and psychiatry say that behind a homophobic person, there is a frustated gay. Is Ratzi a frustrated gay? That old dickhead seems to be as obsessed with gays as Hitler was with Jews (some theories claim Hitler had Jewish ancestors); let’s hope that this permanent anti-gay hysteria on the part of the Vatican does not end up with the killing of homosexuals. Uganda’s politicians are already working on laws that will allow to apply the death penalty, in other words, legal assassination, on homosexuals.
