Judge orders confidential Vatican files to be released

19

Earlier this week (January 7th, 2013), USA Superior Court Judge Emilie H. Elias ordered the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles, California to release 30,000 pages of classified Catholic files that name some high-ranking Church officials.

The documents relate to Vatican priests accused of molesting children, and were used to help more than 550 plaintiffs settle with the archdiocese in 2007 for a record-breaking $US660 million. At that time, the files associated with the cases were ordered to be released to the public, but the Vatican argued for a process to firstly edit some personnel files before their release. Attorneys for the archdiocese wanted the names of Church hierarchs recorded in the documents to be blacked out, as was permitted by a 2010 order by Judge Dickran Tevrizian, who said he feared that releasing the names may be used to ‘embarrass or ridicule the Church’. In December 2012, the ‘Associated Press’ and the ‘Los Angeles Times’ intervened in the case and argued in court papers that the heavy redactions of the sort proposed by the Church would prevent the public from learning which top Vatican officials knew about the plague of pedophile priests, and their involvement in the cover-up of the scandal. Attorneys for the media’s challenge contended that the Vatican’s secrecy concerns were motivated by ‘a desire to avoid further embarrassment’ for the Church, rather than the privacy worries of the people named in the documents, as was claimed by the Church.

Rumors that Pope John Paul II is named in the files

Victims’ association, ‘Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests’ (SNAP) has welcomed Judge Elias’s decision, stating: ‘We’re thrilled and grateful that a California judge is refusing to protect corrupt Catholic officials by keeping long-secret and long-promised church abuse records hidden any longer’. It is believed that the names revealed in the documents range from priests at local churches, various bishops and cardinals, Pope John Paul II, and then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (Pope Benedict XVI today) who, since 2001 oversaw clerical sex abuse cases for the Vatican. As is now being revealed by the international media, the priesthood culture that operated under Pope John Paul II covered up the most grievous crimes and sins of child sex abuse, and many perpetrators were shielded by John Paul II himself, one example being the late Fr. Marcial Maciel Degollado, a Mexican pedophile priest who founded the Legionaries of Christ.

  1. “…Judge Dickran Tevrizian, who said he feared that releasing the names may be used to ‘embarrass or ridicule the Church’.”

And why shouldn’t the church be embarrassed or ridiculed?

The person in overall charge of the Catholic child abuse scandal, and one of the few people to know the name of every molester in the priesthood and the location of every skeleton in every closet, is himself elected Bishop of Rome when the previous one goes to meet his maker. A cynical observer might conjecture that blackmail played a part in Cardinal Ratzinger’s becoming pontiff and that he callously exploited the suffering of thousands of abuse victims worldwide to further his own career ambitions.

  3. This evil empire will ignore anyone or any instruction with which it does not concur. I would wager my mortgage that these files are not released or if they are they will be so heavily revised as to be useless!

They could always give the RCC some new martyrs, by clapping its local representatives in jail for contempt of court, if the files are not promptly handed over in good order!
Perhaps a new category – “Paedophilia martyrs”!

  5. 30 000 pages of embarrassment and ridicule should just about finish this outfit off?
There must have been 300 000 pages feeding the Ryan, Murphy and Cloyne reports in Ireland but it’s still hanging in there, hoping to gain back respect.

  6. I wonder what the reaction will be in Poland where Pope John II is still considered the best Bishop of Rome ever, on par with all their saints. In the eyes of the faithful he could do no wrong – until now…

You will note that in religious portraits, saints have halos, – but there is a view that this is just poor quality artwork which has failed to separate the the tips of the horns at the top!

  8. As Warren Zevon once said, “Send Lawyers guns and Money”. Well Cardinal Ratfurher has plenty of one and three. I dread to think what this sorry lot of bullies and thugs would do with guns.

  9. ‘Embarrass or ridicule the church’ ; that would never do.

    What about the children?

What about the betrayal of trust?

What about evidence that would result in criminal charges being brought?

Oh no, I forgot, the church is above the law and answers only to God; that’s a pretty safe bet I would have thought.

Do they know no shame; rhetorical question.

  10. Dirty, slithering, SCUM!

    The charge sheet to date.

torture and emolation of heretics and dissenters, obstructing the advanement of humanity by promulgating lies, castrating vatican choir boys, enslaving women in magdalene laundries, political involvement and expedition of 2 world wars, genocidal stupidity over contraception, indoctrination of children, mass rape of children, assisting the mass rape of children, perverting the course of justice by hiding paedophiles, obstructing law enforcement agencies, witholding evidence, tampering with evidence…………

And they worry about being embarrased and ridiculed? Too late!

  11. I would be surprised if these documents provided any real bombshell for the catholic church, but if it helps to imprison some of the perverts hiding under the petticoats of the catholic church then shithot.

  12. Dear Vorland. May I add to a few ‘minor’ details to your charge sheet? . . . . .
That despicable Madrid ‘clinic’ of Catholic ‘doctor’ and ‘midwife’ nuns whom KIDNAPPED new-born babies in Franco’s Spain – for about 30 years plus. The babies were handed over to ‘holy’ childless couples – for a profit no doubt. (Shown in a recent BBC investigative documentary(?). They lied to the single mothers, telling them their babies were still-born – dead. Completing the charade, the ‘divine’ nuns showed the mothers a baby corpse which they kept for some years in a freezer. Can you believe that?
Also, dont ever forget those poor, young deaf boys, continuously beaten and raped by the divine ‘brotherhood’. (Sorry, I cannot think where that was – perhaps an RDFr may know more details). m. In reply to #14 by Vorlund:

  13. So, to reflect on what I’ve just read in this article:

A religious institution whose whole idea is predicated on the notion that the head of the church is the spokesperson for the divine and therefore the authority for all things holy is essentially making it’s decision on the appointment of that post mainly on who has kept the church from being seen in the least negative light?

A light that if shed upon the crimes of these priests would not only contradict nearly all of its own teachings but would demonstrate once and for all how truly fallible all these criminals are?

These aren’t the acts of a people trying to preserve the good actions of a religious fossil, these are predators trying to insulate themselves from exposure and revealing the fiction that is the papacy.

And I say it’s high time we got on with it.
