‘Militant atheist’ blogger stabbed in Bangladesh

A self-styled “militant atheist” who is famed for his anti-religious blogs was fighting for life on Tuesday after he was stabbed in the capital of Muslim-majority Bangladesh, police and medics said.

Asif Mohiuddin, 29, was attacked on Monday night by three unidentified men near his office in Dhaka’s upscale Uttara district.

“We operated on him for more than three hours. He is improving but still not out of danger. He has six deep cuts including two grave ones in the shoulder,” Haridas Saha, a surgeon at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, told AFP.

“The nature of the cuts proved that the attackers wanted to murder him,” Saha said, adding that friends of Mohiuddin who were with him at the time of the attack blamed Islamic “fundamentalists”.

Local police chief Rezaul Islam confirmed the attack but did not comment on the motive.

“The attackers were lurking near his office. He was attacked as he was about to enter the office. Passers-by rushed him to a hospital,” Islam told AFP, adding police were investigating the motive.

The Religion of Peace strikes again!

But it is! There will be peace when everyone is either dead or a muslim.

Apart from the various sects of islam not getting along either… Why does religion always create division?

I think any organization, once it gets big enough, suffers from division. There’s always someone who doesn’t like how things are done and wants to do things differently. The only difference with religion is sheer numbers and the collective power to impact others with their ideas of how life should be lived.

  3. …so when someone posts a topic asking for advice on whether or not to come out in their conservative country, know that the danger is real. Sad but true. I wonder if he has ever posted here.

“The Religion of Peace ” is by far the greatest oxymoron ever invented by homosapiens.

Or, in the case of Islamists- ‘homothickasabrick’

  5. You are right. I hope that this young man pulls through and that this does not silence his voice. We should talk about the victim here and defocus on the villan(s).

I think it’s quite sad that people here are going “Look at that! Those savages are proving themselves to be what they are,” rather than sharing their support for the victim.

I am getting so sick of hearing “The Religion of Peace strikes again.” And not because I think the comment is unwarranted or somehow bigoted. (Well, maybe it is bigoted, but only in an alternative universe where the second law of thermodynamics is invalid and evolution runs backwards.) I am sick of hearing it because the people of the house of islam give us so many opportunities to use it.

I think everyone on this site has empathy and hopes for a recovery for Mr Mohiuddin. However (speaking only for myself) my empathy for him is outweighed by my absolute disgust that the attack occurred in the first place!

Yes; my initial reaction upon reading the headline was “s***” >(

  9. I have only 2 questions:

    1) Will the police bother to investigate/arrest/prosecute?
    2) How will the perpetrators be rewarded?
    3) Will Asif himself be prosecuted for blasphemy/incitement to religious hatred….?

    3 questions (well I didn’t expect the Spanish Inquisition….)

  10. A good human being,Asif Mohiuddin is a militant atheist,a human right activist!! In order to stop his writings against islam,he had been given life-threat several times by the muslim fundamentalists and even by the “Progressive muslims”! His fearless approach to question the religious fundamentalism has angered the fundamentalists and progressive muslims in the country and consequently he came into the collision course with the Mullahs,Jamatis,fundamentalists,,moderate/progressive muslims and the gov itself.

Even current government that claims to be a secular one(which it is NOT) arrested him for his writings in the blogs and forums!

He had been warned to stop his activities that “hurt the sentiments of the muslims” of the country!!!

Well, now, here Asif Mohiuddin is-lying in the hospital. His crime was,he wrote against religion………..He was assaulted in the end,as was threatened!!! I guess,if he continues to write against religion,he will killed at the end, like Dr HUmayun Azad…..

Secularists are not at all safe in the country. This is NOT the first time that such assault on a secularist is taking place.

Asif Mohiuddin is a disciple of Dr Humayun Azad. And Dr Azad was also assassinated and killed by the Islamic fundamentalists!! : http://www.englishsabla.com/forum/showthread.php?21477-Amnesty-Intl-protest-attack-on-Bangladeshi-Intellectual

Another secularist, humanist that was attacked by the mullahs and progressive muslims(and the gov itself) is Tasleema Nasrin. According to Wiki : “Following the publication of Lajja, Nasrin suffered a number of physical and other attacks. She had written against Islamic philosophy, angering many Muslims of Bangladesh, who called for a ban on her novel. In October 1993, an Islamic fundamentalist group called the Council of Islamic Soldiers offered a bounty for her death…………” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taslima_Nasrin)

So,such attack is nothing new in our country. In the country, secularists, human right activists, atheists are not safe at all. They never were!!!

I wonder if there will ever be a time when the secularists,atheists,non-religious people will to feel safe, when the religious extremists(and progressive ones) will not kill us anymore showing the cause that their “religious sentiment” is HURT!!!!

Gov in our country indirectly supports the perpetrators…………See the case of Dr. Humayun Azad and Tasleema Nasrin!!

Asif was arrested last year by the gov for his “blasphemous” writings/activities!

I think,if Asif continues his activities and writings against islam after he recovers from his injury this time,a time may come, when they will try to kill him, like they did to Dr Humayun Azad in our country!

  12. Thanks a lot for the article. But there are lots of things to share about secularism, atheism and human right condition in Bangladesh. Atheist bloggers are being slaughtered by Islamists with a hit list of famous bloggers in their hand now a days.
