Icelandic Parliament passes life stance equality law

12

The Icelandic Parliament (Althing) this week passed a law which gives secular life stance organisations the right to apply for equal legal status with religions.

The new law amends the current law about registered religious organisations. Thus, for the first time in Icelandic history, the government recognizes and guarantees equality between secular and religious life stances!

Sidmennt, the Icelandic Ethical Humanist Association, has been lobbying for such a change for more than ten years and celebrates this historic turning point. As soon as the law takes effect, Sidmennt will apply to the Ministry of the Interior for registration which will guarantee equal rights and freedom of conscience to its 300 members. Sidmennt is grateful to the Minister of the Interior, Ogmundur Jonasson, who introduced and championed this human rights bill and to all those members of Parliament who voted in favour of it.

  1. Well, that seems to be one of those “if you cant stop them, join them” moves. I would prefer if there was no special privileging of religions or ‘life stance organizations’ of any kind. Why can’t life stance organizations be legally equivalent to organizations such as amnesty international, sport clubs or scout organizations?

In Germany four humanist groups have acquired the status of life stance organizations and are therefore theoretically entitled to collect church taxes from there members. They of course don’t, but they might. They like myself feel it would be better if there were no church taxes to begin with.

  2. There should be three boxes to fill in for a person. Two for parental religion/life stance and a third for the individual’s religion/life stance. This latter is filled in only by the person themselves if they wish to, but only from the age of majority or perhaps the age of consent.

  3. I’d prefer the wording, ‘Life Stance (or Religion, if any).

Just woke up to British marriages lying in tatters all around me. People are throwing hurriedly packed suitcases and children into cars and burning rubber as they scream away from their former wife/husband. The divorce rate is expected to reach around 100% by midday. It’s awful. I’ve never seen anything like this? So sad. So, so sad.

No, wait… sorry, nothing has changed at all.

    Anvil.

Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling! Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes! The dead rising from the grave! Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together… mass hysteria!

Absolutely NOT. All census information must be minimal & should disregard such ‘judgment calls’ as irrelevant- collect only information proven to be essential to the function of the census. Less is more.

  6. Census’s are important, less is less, more is better. But this question cannot be answered until the person has made that decision so it’s an impossible question. Like – What is your favourite sport?

Unless you’re a muslim of course and then the answer is know and can’t change within your life unless you’re prepared to die.

  7. Yet another reason to love Iceland. It’s home to some of the most straightforward and reasonable people I’ve ever met. Whenever I look around at the stupid religious, corporate, and political shit happening in my own country, I get an intense urge to pack up and book a one-way ticket on Icelandair.
