Kashmir girl band Pragaash gives up after threats

23

An all-girl rock group in
Indian-administered Kashmir say they have disbanded after the region’s
most senior cleric called them “un-Islamic”.

“Just tell everyone we have quit. We are no more a band,” one of the members of the group Pragaash told the BBC.

The three teenage members say they have received threats since they appeared at a Srinagar music event in December.

On Sunday the Muslim-majority state’s grand mufti criticised them for what he said was indecent behaviour.

“When girls and young women stray from the rightful path… this kind of non-serious activity can become the first step towards our destruction,” Grand Mufti Bashiruddin Ahmad said in a statement, quoted by AFP news agency.

Many others have leapt to the girls’ defence, however. Support for a band which has broken with tradition has poured in from all over the state and elsewhere in India, where the story has been headline news.

Abuse

Pragaash made their first live appearance at the Battle of the Bands music festival in Srinagar in December. Since then, they say they have received abuse and hate mail on their Facebook page.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has promised police will investigate the threats, and has promised the state will ensure their security.

  1. “When girls and young women stray from the rightful path… this kind of non-serious activity can become the first step towards our destruction,

    Damn right, you freaking dinosaur…

  2. I just had a look on iTunes but couldn’t find any music by Pragaash. They evidently hadn’t made it to the stage where they had become commercial when their dreams were crushed by frustrated dickheads.

Never mind. Didn’t Madonna come out in defense of Pussy Riot a few months ago. Is Madge on Twitter? Most slebs are these days. I don’t do the Twitter thing myself, but others here might, and Richard certainly does.

RDnetters who are on Twitter could bombard the former Mrs Penn/Ritchie/Fortensky with messages informing her about this group.

And other musicians too. Elton has to be a tweeterer. And Bonio.

  3. There is no joy in religion unless we are raising our voices in praise of the Big Prick in the sky. It’s time to irradicate Mufti and his dictatorial religion from society. Will some courageous promoter please take up their cause, make this band famous and rub this Grand Mufti Bashiruddin Ahmad’s nose in his own shit.

  4. Religious intolerance and/or censorship in how many countries now? Including the UK, I’m running out of fingers and toes to count them. Excuse me if they have turned a once tolerant person angrier and angrier.

  5. This is what you get with islam. Threats of violence to subjugate anyone who is perceived as a threat. Such behaviour has no place in a modern world and islam has to be fought at all levels to marginalise it and ultimately stamp it out of existence. It is a dangerous and pernicious infection of the mind inflicted by execrable mullahs and imams onto primitive uneducated poor suppressed masses. And it’s spreading its filthy tentacles into all civilised Western democratic countries. Danger.

  6. I have just watched “A concert for Bangladesh” where the power of music did some good for the helpless victims of a religiously motivated war over 40 years ago. Music can do so much good. Religion brings nothing but conflict hatred poverty repression and despair. Over 40 years on and the dogmatic cretins of jihad are still fucking everything up for everyone in the name of their perverted criminal faith based abomination called islam. And all other religions are equally divisive, hateful and dangerous. Mankind needs to grow up and shed for ever the curse of religious belief.

  7. I agree. Dangerous music!!! i am going to see Zappa plays Zappa on Friday night. It will be my son’s first concert ever. I just wish he could have seen Frank. Dangerous music. Something (I think) we all should aspire to. (and a great name for a band).

It’s good to know that music can still be dangerous. I’m saddened to hear the young women have given up.

No it is the first step towards your enlightenment you grand Muf.

I now have the dual ear worm Mud Shark, and Peaches en Regalia spinning merrily around my head – that’s your fault.

    Thanks.

    Anvil.

    edit: Enjoy the gig.

  11. You are welcome!!!! My wife sent me flowers the day Frank died.

I hope Dweezil plays “A token of my Extreme” or my own very favorite “Heavenly Bank Account” here are the lyrics:

And if these words you do not heed, your pocket book just kinda might recede
When some man comes along and claims a godly need
He will clean you out right through your tweed

That’s right, you asked for it, remember there is a big difference between kneeling down and bending over

He’s got twenty million dollars in his Heavenly Bank Account
All from those chumps who was born again, oh yeah, oh yeah
He’s got seven limousines and a private plane
All for the use of his special friends, oh yeah, oh yeah
He’s got thousand-dollar suits and a Wembley Tie
Girls love to stroke it while he’s on the phone, oh yeah, oh yeah
At the House of Representatives he’s a groovy guy
When he gives thanks he is not alone

He is dealin’, he is really dealin’, IRS can’t determine where the hook is
It is easy with the bible to pretend that you’re in Show Biz (And the one and the two and the…)
They won’t get him, they will never get him for the naughty stuff that he did
It is best in cases like this to pretend that you are stupid

He’s got Presidential help all along the way
He says the grace while the lawyers chew, oh yeah, they sure do
And the Governors agree to say: “He’s a lovely man”
He makes it easier for them to screw all of you, yes, that’s true
‘Cause he helps put the fear of god in the common man
Snatchin’ up money everywhere he can, oh yeah, oh yeah
He’s got twenty million dollars in his Heavenly Bank Account
    You ain’t got nothin’, people
    You ain’t got nothin’, people
    You ain’t got nothin’, people
    Thank the man, oh yeah
As we end another broadcast today let me say that “You ain’t got nothin’ and he’s got it all”
And your miserable self is against the wall
The only thing you have not tried, is the sport of chumps, that’s suicide

Goodness knows how the religinuts will respond to this one!

New DNA galaxy Song – Eric Idle

I performed it live for the first time last night! – Around here they like it!

  14. BTW,
Zeppelin’s masterpiece “Kashmir” on Physical Graffiti — see ’10 years gone” — see “In the Light” — see “the rover” — see “Down by the Seaside” __ see ” trampled under foot” __ see + Houses of the Holy” — see “Custard Pie” — see “In my time of dying”… etc… evolved in a limo on the way through this “wasted land”

I am not qualified to say it but: these kids gave up too soon. (not that I’d have had any guts… I am a pussy)… This is the land of the ” I was gonna put some Zeppelin lyrics here”…and talk about KASHMIR…

This allows me to opine my favorite opinion: “a band is as good as it’s drummer”. That is why Zeppelin is the best of the best. Bonham is/was the single most talented musician in the history of our planet. Better than mozart. bette than beethoven… better than hendrix… better than everyone. The best ever. My opinion (true). But, holy shit, I never encountered anyone on his level. (except maybe John Paul Jones).

  15. Hey girls come and live in australia we like music, fun and life. We’ll even let you get an education, marry who you like and won’t attack your privates with anything sharp. Seriously, oppressed women of these backward nations should apply for refugee status on grounds of cultural sexual discrimination. I can only feel for you living in a society where you are afraid to be your true self.

  16. Yeah, why wouldn’t you? All the plundered wealth through 200 years of genocide & systemic extermination of aboriginals? An endemic xenophobia against the natives? Victorian pedophiles? The most retarded right wing politicians of the western world? We all got our dirty laundries, mate :)
