Rick Perry Opposes Opening Boy Scouts to Gays

25

Gov. Rick Perry of Texas said emphatically Saturday that the Boy Scouts of America should not soften its strict policy barring gay members, and dismissed the idea of bending the organization to the whims of “popular culture.”

r. Perry, the country’s longest-serving governor, is an Eagle Scout, and in 2008 he wrote the book “On My Honor: Why the American Values of the Boy Scouts Are Worth Fighting For.” It detailed his deep love for the organization and explained why it should continue to embrace traditional conservative values — including excluding openly gay members and leaders.

The governor spoke at the Texas Scouts’ 64th annual Report to State, where hundreds of scouts from across the state filled the State House of Representatives to announce their delegations’ recent accomplishments. Mr. Perry had addressed the gathering several times before, most recently in 2010.

The Scouts’ national leadership announced last week that it was considering ending the mandatory exclusion of gay members. The group could allow different religious and civic groups that sponsor Scout units to decide for themselves whether to maintain the exclusion or open up their membership.

  1. Of course he does. (He is a sheep.) He has been told that this is the “right” thing to do. So he is merely following orders. (He is a sheep.) If, tomorrow the church flipped, he’d defend their new stance and their right to change. (He is a sheep.) Arbitrary hatred based on instructions in a 2000 year old silly book is what he lives by. (He is a sheep.)

Thought I would try some of that subliminal mind control. Is it working (He is a sheep)…

What an oxymoronic waste of atoms.
The sexual orientation of a human being is primarily a genetic question( people are born this way, it is in their nature ). My question to Perry would be: How can you test whether a child is homosexual or not?

I’m guessing the answer is blowing in the wind.

  6. I can’t say I’m surprised. Perry is an ass.

But I must be feeling optomistic today because I’m picturing someone 100 years from now finding this article in an archive and reading it with the same disdain that nearly everyone feels today about historical advocates for slavery or for segregation. Such saber-rattling may get Perry votes today and score him points with his base for ‘courage’ but I think it will eventually tar his legacy and leave him ‘remembered’ with the likes of George Wallace or David Duke. Perry and his ilk are on the just plain on wrong side of history, and if the boy scouts remain rigid on this issue, they will slowly become marginalized – eventually becoming as reviled as any other hate group hiding behind ‘values’ arguments. I would hate to see that because I’m an Eagle scout myself, and the organization meant a great deal to me in my formative years. It has so much to offer, but of course I can no longer support the BSA until they end discrimination.

I really hope (and actually strongly suspect) that coming generations will recognize this bigotry and shake their heads at how backwards folks used to be. I;ve written letters, made calls, signed petitions etc. to try to make that version of history come to pass.

Ooo, you minx you. I hadn’t read it quite that way. Thanks for the laugh,

  10. Mr. Perry told the youngsters that the Scouts were a key reason that he had joined the Air Force and later sought public office, and that society’s failure to adhere to the organization’s core values was a cause for high rates of teenage pregnancy and wayward youths who grow up to be “men joining their fathers in prison.”

Yeah, high rates of teenage pregnancy are attributable to society’s failure to adhere to the Scouts’ rejection of things like…um…tolerance of gay people.

How does that work again, Rick baby?

Seriously, man, you need to accept that you’re never going to be president; so you can stop all this business of trying to keep your name in the papers. Given the pose you strike in every photo of you that’s taken, it’s obvious that the person you most want to be is Buzz Lightyear.
So may I suggest you follow the lead of a fellow homophobic politician and try to get your ass shot into space.

    To infinity and beyond!

And don’t feel you need to come back.

  11. SHEEP!!!

Ahhhh…thank you for reminding me! From my beloved Pink Floyd album – Animals, here are the lyrics for the song – Sheep

    Sheep (Waters) 10:19

    Harmlessly passing your time in the grassland away;
Only dimly aware of a certain unease in the air.
    You better watch out,
    There may be dogs about
I’ve looked over Jordan, and I have seen
Things are not what they seem.

What do you get for pretending the danger’s not real.
Meek and obedient you follow the leader
Down well trodden corridors into the valley of steel.
    What a surprise!
A look of terminal shock in your eyes.
Now things are really what they seem.
No, this is no bad dream.

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want
He makes me down to lie
Through pastures green He leadeth me the silent waters by.
With bright knives He releaseth my soul.
He maketh me to hang on hooks in high places.
He converteth me to lamb cutlets,
For lo, He hath great power, and great hunger.
When cometh the day we lowly ones,
Through quiet reflection, and great dedication
    Master the art of karate,
    Lo, we shall rise up,
And then we’ll make the bugger’s eyes water.

Bleating and babbling I fell on his neck with a scream.
Wave upon wave of demented avengers
March cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream.

    Have you heard the news?
    The dogs are dead!
    You better stay home
    And do as you’re told.
Get out of the road if you want to grow old.

  12. If it’s intelligent, compassionate, humane, minutely diminishes the profits of his wealthier constituents, or even remotely smacks of social progress beyond the level of the Neolithic, Rick Perry Opposes It. How about Texans start opposing Rick Perry? Or they could do us all a favor and just secede.

  13. Governor Rick was just in California trying to recruit people with science and technology educations to work in Texas. I wonder what kind and how much money it takes to get educated people to move to Texas given its weird take on American values. If I suspected my child of being gay I don’t think I would subject them to the Texas enviroment, public or private schooling?
