Vatican loses fight to keep sex files secret

33

After six years of American court appeals by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to keep 30,000 pages of internal, sealed files of priesthood sex crimes out of public scrutiny, the State Supreme Court recently ordered their release, and the documents became public for the first time.
They make for startling reading, soul-jarring and shocking, an incontrovertible record of brutal and heartless rapes committed by 122 Roman Catholic priests who presented themselves to the world as the earthly agents of God. These files are a remarkable archive of criminal behaviour condoned by the Holy See, and are disturbing to read. Ray Boucher, the lead attorney for plaintiffs, said that what is revealed in the files is ‘chilling’, and ‘the irony in all of this’, he added, ‘is that in their vain attempts to protect the image of the church, they’ve tarnished it beyond repair’. Upon reading the unsealed documents, an anonymous Vatican official said that the Los Angeles Catholic priesthood ‘left a wake of devastation that is hard to comprehend’.

The sacked Cardinal

As a direct result of the release of the documents, and in a move unprecedented in the American Catholic Church, Los Angeles Archbishop Jose Gomez announced that he had relieved his predecessor, Cardinal Roger M. Mahony, of all public duties over his serious mishandling of clergy sex abuse of children over the previous decades. Archbishop Gomez also announced that Auxiliary Bishop Thomas J. Curry, who worked with Cardinal Mahony to conceal child sex abusers from police, had resigned his post as a regional bishop in Santa Barbara, California. In a letter addressed to ‘My brothers and sisters in Christ’, Archbishop Gomez wrote; ‘I find these files to be brutal and painful reading. The behavior described in these files is terribly sad and evil’. Such is the nature of the Catholic priesthood the world over.

  1. It’s time for every nation on the planet to ensure that The Church is disbanded, a collapse of Catholicism enforced by the UN. They’ve had 1700 years in which they had total control of believers’ lives. They have created fear, carried out millions of atrocities in the name of their non-existent god, created fear in peoples lives where there should have been a celebration of life, brainwashed tiny children into fear of Hell, extracted untold billions and billions of dollars from those who often couldn’t afford it.

Catholic Church? Rot in the Hell of your creation.

  2. “Archbishop Jose Gomez announced that he had relieved his predecessor, Cardinal Roger M. Mahony, of all public duties over his serious mishandling of clergy sex abuse of children over the previous decades”

Like a child, full of remorse when they can no longer deny it, but full of equivocation until then.

This is such non-moral behaviour, it’s a miracle that people think the Roman Catholic Church gives moral leadership.

  3. “Upon reading the unsealed documents, an anonymous Vatican official said that the Los Angeles Catholic priesthood ‘left a wake of devastation that is hard to comprehend’.”

The scandal in the LA diocese began to be made public in the mid-80s. I cannot believe for one second that the Vatican did not have access to these files before they were recently unsealed.

  4. Arrest Mahony now, charges= him with crimes aginst humanity and send him to the roughest jail in the USA. With any luck he will find out exactly what rape means. Send a message to the RCC criminals that they will all be hunted down. Make the purge so severe that the likes of Ratstrangler will have to cower in their self imposed prison for all time. Gomez in all likelihood is not innocent, he ducked the issue until the position became impossible to defend by any means. He should fear the knock on the door as well.

Sequester the RCC funds and confiscate their property to pay compensation AND restitution to the victims.

  5. “an incontrovertible record of brutal and heartless rapes committed by 122 Roman Catholic priests who presented themselves to the world as the earthly agents of God”

By being brutal and heartless criminals, they were the earthly agents of their brutal and heartless criminal god. Just read the Old Testament, and its behaviour doesn’t get much better in the New Testament.

  6. While far (very, VERY far) from complete, it’s relieving to see that people are persistent in getting to the bottom of these hidden records and discovering what depths of deception the church has been active in. We need to see a LOT more of this and not stop until we know the extent of the damage done by this institution of child rapists and enablers. Especially the fellows in their precious ivory tower in Rome.

All those complicit need to held accountable.

  7. No morality without religion eh ? Seems like Jesus was asleep on the Watch for the last century at least !

Bully Bhoys get their comeuppance ! Mother Church is disgraced by carrying out orders from Holy Joe !

Just the tip of many more icebergs, I suspect

  8. Perhaps all the others, including pope benny, who covered it up should be forced into some of the adolescent mental health units to see how the victims of sexual abuse actually suffer. The abuse may have stopped in the RCC but they never got to see what sort of damage it does to the whole of someones life.

I suspect if I wrote some of the things I’ve been told about the victims of child sexual abuse by friends who work in education and child protection the post would rightly be removed as too horrific. The levels of self harm and the specific areas where children harm themselves in an attempt to make themselves unattractive to their abusers. The higher risk of serious suicides, the depressions that last for years and so on.

Pope benny, Sean Brady and his other cover up pals should go in and see the sorts of things they were really covering up all those years ago!!!!!!! Because I really don’t think they gave a s@@@ about that part. They should witness the full horrors that continue long after the event.

And they should be forced to understand that current victims who are not victims of the RCC are at least seeing their abusers being taken to court and at least have the small comfort of being assured again and again it wasn’t their faults at all. Something the RCC never managed!!

  9. So scarey!
“Such is the nature of the Catholic priesthood the world over. “

Exactly! This is only the LA chapter, but as the man said, it’s the same the world over. So, how does one go about getting all diocese to handover their sex cover-up paperwork?

  10. Well once again it looks as though the Foundation for “reason” and science has demonstated its total disregard for reason by ignoring the basic journalistic (and scientific) principle of checking the validity and authenticity of its sources and recycled the ranting of a one-man single issue website pretending that it represents some startling new revelation, or a serious contribution to debate. The Vatileaks website has about the same level of journalistic objectivity and credibility as the comically-named International Tribunal into Crimes against Church and State that you fell for on 18th Feb. The only “reason” that seems to be applied here is “as long as its derogatory about the pope and the Church, why bother checking if its true?”

  11. If I was a cardinal they would have to tie me to the damn chair to put the pope hat on me. At this point is there anyone left in that church with any sense of morality that isn’t twisted all to hell.

You are right. That site is dodgy. When you read some of the other stories it has “published” there’s an even cruder, muckraking tone about them. It does real harm to the cause of seriously taking the RCCult to task for the sex abuse cover-up by providing wavering cult members (like yourself?) with reasons to actually give Mahony and his minions the benefit of any doubt there might be regarding their role in its criminal institutional behaviour which was far more devastatingly revealed in the brilliant but sickening documentary film Deliver Us From Evil.

    (not viewable in some areas)

In related story in mainstream media, there’s a lot of handwringing going on among RCCult members about the hot topic of whether Roger The Dodger Mahony should be allowed to go to the conclave to vote for a new poop.

Who the hell keeps paperwork on their crimes?

Well I suppose it must have been complicated moving all those priests around all the time. I mean, imagine the embarrassment for the Church if they accidentally moved a pedophile back into one of his old parishes.

  14. The well-documented homosexual pedophilia practiced worldwide by Catholic priests is certainly heinous enough all by itself, but what about the abuse of women and girls also hidden behind the “cloth” of cassock and collar? Pedophiles, even in the Catholic church, are a relatively small percentage of the population. Although often not reported, or well documented and explored, heterosexual abuse abounds simply because straight people outnumber gay people in the general population, and in the church as well. My first year in Catholic High School (9th grade) two of the 14 year old girls in our class had to leave school because they had been made pregnant by one of the priests! I know this because one of them was a relative! This single anecdote by a single observer (me) does not constitute proof, but if this happens in a small Midwestern city, just imagine how the numbers would look on world-wide basis. It is my assertion that such heterosexual abuses far outnumber any others simply based on the sexual demographics of the population. The Catholic Church Hierarchy has proved itself to be a significant instrument of EVIL in the world.

The police searched the home of the accused thief and found a file marked “Houses I broke into”

In a discussion with a devout Catholic on the issue, I was informed (and I quote): “We are beyond your reach — and always have been…” I’m thinking it was a similarly arrogant miscalculation that led RCC hierarchy to retain records that anyone else would deep six. Of course too, after the first suits were brought, if they had started purging the files, that alone would be evidence of a guilty mind.

To my ears, that sounds very similar to “We are above the law — and always have been.”

If they had started purging the files after the first suits were brought, that would be attempting to “pervert” the course of justice.

I wonder if Benny gets a special mention anywhere?

“Benny” reminds me of Benny Hinn, the “faith healing minister”. He used to have do-people-really-believe-this-s**t stadium meetings. Now that his shenanigans are on youtube for the world to laugh at, he’s been relegated to a 24/7 religious channel where he basically rocks back and forth saying “god is good, god is good”.

Ahh! yes Benny Hinn…have you heard what his son has been up to recently?

By their love so shall ye know them!

And a little warning to Benny Jr…

    1 John 4:20

(Off topic…can anyone explain simply how to get an url link formatted…the explanation is a nightmare I cannot make head or tail of it)

  19. The notion of disbanding the RC is both ludicrous and impractical. It would enable them to portray themselves as a persecuted brotherhood of martyrs rather than the deluded bunch of nonces an increasing proportion of the world perceives them. Laugh at them, criticise them but rulers from Diocletian to Stalin have proved that trying to ban them does not work.

    1 John 4:20
Well this was in reference to…

” If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.”

Arguably beating up deaf and dumb man can not be construed as love more a rather toxic hate for a fellow human being.

But seeing as usually all variation of cult preach a different hymn

They all seem fairly consistent on this point!

Or maybe that’s just the disabled perception through the confirmation-biased-blinkers of the apologist!

Roman Catholics in the US have delivered a petition asking Cardinal Roger Mahony to stay away from the conclave in Rome to choose a new pope.

The former Archbishop of Los Angeles was stripped of his duties last month over allegations he protected priests accused of child sex abuse.

Continuing scandals over sex abuse in the Church have cast a shadow over the process of choosing a new pope.
Activist group Catholics United gathered nearly 10,000 signatures asking Cardinal Mahoney to recuse himself from the conclave that will chose the next leader of the world’s Catholics.

Handing in the petition in Los Angeles, the group’s communications director, Chris Pumpelly, said he was delivering a “message of pain” from thousands of Catholics.

“Cardinals, bishops and leaders of the church, listen to the cries of your flock, respect the victims of abuse and cover up, don’t run from it,” he said.

“Your scandal brings pain to the faithful.”

On Saturday Cardinal Mahony answered questions for more than three hours from lawyers investigating sexual abuse by priests while he was Archbishop of Los Angeles from 1985-2011.

Church files unsealed under a court order last month show that in the 1980s he sent priests known to be abusers out of California to protect them from criminal prosecution.

The Cardinal was expected to board a plane for Rome shortly being questioned under oath.

The pontificating on “reason” by those advocating the fallacy of circular reasoning to support their confirmation biases, is ironic – but entertaining buffoonery!

The only “reason” that seems to be applied here is “as long as its derogatory about the pope and the Church, why bother checking if its true?”

.. Unless of course you actually look at the the evidence, rather than sitting in denial, seeing no evil by looking through those apologist blinker specs!

There is not a script writer of any drama, comedy, tragedy on this planet that could ever consider this plot twist as any way a serious or likely turn of events, it is just a tad over rational expectation, it is in the realms of a bad fantasy B rated first paperback attempt at a thin plotted, characterization poor novel.

Even in Dynasty when it was at the peak of popularity and had a UFO storyline which was far more believable then the shenanigans of your average RCC Cardinal in the here and now.

They never fail to scrape the barrel bottom in the most enthusiastic way…don’t they?
