Thousands of Dutch girls abused by priests since 1945: Report

36

Thousands of Dutch girls have suffered sexual and physical abuse by Roman Catholic Church officials since 1945, a report says.
An independent investigative commission, funded by the Dutch Bishop’s Conference and mandated by the government, reported on Monday that the girls were molested by members of the clergy in their homes or in churches.

According to the report, they suffered physical abuse and intimidation at the hands of nuns at young women’s homes.

The committee said around 40 percent of the girls interviewed in the study, led by former Hague mayor Wim Deetman, had been raped by priests or deacons.

In December 2011, the preliminary results of the investigation mainly focusing on children estimated that up to 20,000 of them were harassed at Catholic boarding schools between 1945 and 2010, and “several tens of thousands” faced abuse of some kind.

The latest follow-up study concentrated more on Catholic girls and young women, who in addition to boarding schools, were often sent to homes for unwed mothers run by nuns if they became pregnant without being married.

“In cases of physical violence without sexual abuse, both new and previous complaints point toward primarily female perpetrators, mostly nuns who worked as educators or caregivers,” the report said, adding, “In heavy cases of sexual abuse, the perpetrators were primarily male.”

    • Sadly, well said. I think you have encapsulated the crisis and the aftermath in one sad sad statement. Sorry you had to be right.

Anyone ever seen the movie “sleepers”? Christ, it approaches a growing minority, if not a thin majority. How could we have been asleep at the wheel for so long???

Getting a little angry now too.

Unless the tide is about to turn very suddenly it still seems that no matter how many new reports like this come out, Catholics are still Catholics. Still confident that the institution that caused this will fix it all and all the nasty stories will go away. the media still go all gooey at the prospect of getting to run a story on the pope, newsreaders using the same insipid tone of voice normally saved for heartening royal announcements or stories of WW2 war veterans reunited with their childhood sweethearts and the Vatican spews out all the fodder they need, even sinking to new lows by having a new election that has, quite frankly brought me close to putting some deep claw marks in my TV screen, without having even smothered the last on in his bed yet.

And look at what they trotted out! a Jesuit taking on the mantle of a lowly humble Franciscan, offering further misdirection with talk of helping the poor and not wanting all the trappings like the big fat gold throne he’s getting his arse-print into… a story from the childhood sweetheart who spurned him because their parents didn’t understand their love causing him to choose the simple priestly life…[ack...ack..ackkk] sorry had a hairball..

All this irrelevant bullshit spilling out into my living room and in the meantime I see stories like this and I’m not shocked either, but with each story I’m becoming a little more desensitised to it. a little less caring about the victims, a little more accepting there’s nothing you can do and there’ll be more of the same tomorrow and the very people who need be most outraged will be the ones to palm it off as a few bad apples a long time ago and everything’s fine now and the abusers have all gone to confession

      that makes me angry

  1. Yes, and on and on it goes. Hundreds of thousands, perhaps even millions of children and young people abused sexually or physically by those in whom they trusted, people who teach and preach love and caring and should be beyond committing the despicable acts that they did.

Children growing up being unable to forget the horrors, many couldn’t live with the memory and took their own lives; 40 just in the state of Victoria, Australia alone. Does The Church deem them to be sinners because they took their own life, even though employees of The Church caused the action? How does The Church explain that away to their god?

Well, at least this disposes of the disgraceful suggestion that all Catholic priests are homosexual!

That’s where the potential Black Pope lost it; said Africa did not have molestation problems because they execute homosexuals. Boy, I bet his face is red right now.

Wow, I can see priests all around the world molesting little girls just to avoid any suggestion of being homosexual.

Are you really saying what I think your saying here? That the label of ‘Homosexual’ is far far worse than molesting little girls? Really?

No, I doubt very much that he is saying that – I think he’s making a point that THEY think it’s more ‘evil’ to be homosexual than to molest little girls…

That’s because they are sick low-life scum who have no business breathing the same air as the rest of us…

  2. Like this should come as a surprise to anyone? At least it is reassuring that since there is “heavy sexual abuse”, they also found instances of “light sexual abuse”.

I want to know about how the perpetrators of these crimes are distributed among various psychiatric disorders. The nuns seem like a perfect fit to sadistic personality disorder of older versions of the psychiatric DSM. Is their form of abuse an expression of similar energy as what drives the priests, but manifested in different ways because of physical differences?

What a horror to think of a perpetual motion machine where physical and sexual abuse feed out of families, churches, schools, homes for the wayward and then back to create the next generation of abusers. But it is not limited to that, it spreads out into the community at large, into non-eclesiastical vocations. These can provide similarly protective, enabling environments that, as an example, sadistic personalities might be drawn to. It is so easy to think of examples, especially where religion, ethnicity, and history of oppression and clerical abuse have come together, there’s no need to be more explicit.

Some of the comments are disgusting. Funny thing…..I tried to rate one as negative, and the rating changed from quite negative to strongly positive. What goes on there ?

Yep, I think I know the one you mean – the one that appears to blame the ‘Zionist Conspiracy’ for the lack of morals and common decency in the Catholic Church… When are people going to let this ‘Protocols of Zion’ nonsense go?

I rated it as negative too, it went green… I refreshed and it’s red again… hopefully it’ll stay that way…

  3. So let me get this right, in parts of this planet where people browbeat about enlightenment and empiricism, equality and justice, freedom and liberty, we have a cult of child abusers and bigots, but they can’t do anything about it? From San Jose, CA through Dublin, Brussels, Dresden, Vatican and Zagreb till Sydney, Perth and Melbourne, children, let me reiterate, children being sexual abused by priests and nun and you can’t do jack shit about it?

    Really?

G8/OECD/industrialized democracies/developed nations and all the great self adulation you can sing. But you can’t stop a cult of superstitious bigots stop abusing your children. You televise every single irrelevant rituals of this cult on TV. Spend hours on news time discussing a closed door election of a bigot! Seriously? You give them diplomatic immunity? And act helpless when children are abused. Really? But you could nuke Japan twice, send humans to moon, invade countries in a whim. But cannot stop a bunch of old men in garbs! Really?

Absolutely sick, isn’t it… and it’s not just the physical abuse of thousands of children either (which is horrific enough on its own), but the psychological abuse of billions of others that happens every time one of them steps foot inside a church, listens to the total garbage spouted by a priest, or reads their precious Bible…

When will this wretched species learn…

  4. It’s just more of the pseudo-celebates, taking out their sexual frustrations on the weak and vulnerable where they can – while posing as instilling “moral superiority”!

Gullible and brain-washed politicians bought it for enough years, and some still do! -

..and what about the upsetting of the poor sheeples with those nasty allegations about their heroic church leaders!!!!

    Do not get disheartened.

    Consider the context…

A RCC magisterium that is visibly losing the plot as the true scale of their perversions continues leaking out every day.

They managed to hush it up for years now that silence is broken they have failed!

And some naive dimbats are shocked, they are just waking up to a situation that has been under their noses for far to long…The Irish Taoiseach for one..and he has reacted with the appropriate reaction, more will follow his example in time.

The RCC never ever envisaged their perfidy would be broadcast around the Diocese let alone the world, they are in shock and in meltdown disarray.
And they are making fundamental errors every day in their desperation and hysteria, they just elected another mill stone for their neck, it was done in such panic they have simply managed to compound their terror !

It may not seem it but you are witnessing the beginning of the real end, their grasp on the throat of secular is visibly slipping, they held it in their grubby grasping claws in a death grip until comparatively recently, they are losing it and it will not be reversible whatever image they plonk on their tacky throne, because they are badly damaged and sorely in need to divert attention.

That alone should give you the clue, they are attempting a smoke and mirror gambit that they always try when they are faced with bad PR, this time they are trying to block to many gaps with to few corks and the evil oily toxic stuff of their evil is leaking in everywhere now, they are fatally holed and sinking.

The way Benny jumped ship is an indication that all is not well, and it is probably the death knell of their insanity, what did they do ? they got rid of their fucking pope…they had to!
To many skeletons in his cupboard and they know it, they are attempting to distance themselves from the fallout of Benny and his cover up as a Cardinal.

And compounded their embarrassment by choosing one that represents their escape plan, The third world, it is the only place left where they can skulk and indulge their perversion without a educated Western world being a witness!…they are being hounded to the ‘ends of the Earth’ to paraphrase franny!
They are exiled affectively…so be of good cheer…now to finish the punks off!

This is just the beginning of a very public ending, it will happen sooner rather then later, the pattern is set and it will not change however often the ‘crows’ shake the tube…the kaleidoscope is stuck!

All religion in the west is seeing the same pattern, they are not going to win hearts and minds in the 21st century like they did since the 1st century, that is well and truly over, and what they do have is sliding out from under in ever increasing numbers.

RCC is big…but not immune, it is failing, that failing will become more pronounced and it will pick up speed.

Rationality will win, it always will despite the lies and scaremongering the delusional spout.

Now it the time to really stand up and let them know…ignore the sycophantic media they are just dim ideas run by dim people, they will catch up when they see the tide is reversing…now is the time to engage on the terms of Humanity.

    As Aragorn would say…

Hold your ground – hold your ground! Sons of Gondor – of Rohan . . . my brothers! I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. The day may come when the courage of Men fails; when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship; but it is not this day – an hour of wolves and shattered shields, when the Age of Man comes crashing down – but it is not this day!! This day we fight! By all that you hold dear on this good earth – I bid you stand, men of the west!

  6. Hardly a week passes without another nasty surprise on the part of the RCC. Sometimes I think it would have been better that Attila the Hun had conquered Rome and had established a barbarian civilization, perhaps we would have spared all this horror to children. These RC priests are insatiable, they sexually abuse of anything that moves. The new Witch-Doctor wants to stop all abuses in the RCC (so he says), but that is going to be an impossible task, this organization is rotten to the core. A partial solution would be to allow its staff to marry to reduce sexual frustration and tension. I’m sure child abuse would be substantially reduced. For the rest of their scandals they would need a Council of experts on Ethics to solve them. It would take some years, though.

I don’t think child abuse on the part of RC clerics has something to do with homosexuality. These clerics are forced to practise forced celibacy and children are creatures that most resemble to women. The predilection for young boys has been going on since ancient times when women were forced to remain at home and not allowed to interact with men. I’ve been told that this practice is still going on in some Middle East countries, although it’s forbidden. In this case, though, the clerics were “lucky”, they managed to lay their dirty hands on girls.

  8. A few years ago when these child abuse cases started to get noticed, there was a report done in the US which said that despite thousands of children being molested by priests in US, those cases only represent about 5% of all sexual abuse cases. What are the remaining 95%? Sexual abuse of adult women. The priests have had it easy attacking women in their congregations because they are authority figures trusted by the community.

And that’s something that isn’t talked about. For example women’s rights organizations never attack the church for that, they are strangely silent on abuse of women caused by religions. If 5% of sexual abuse cases mean thousands of children, then the remaining 95% of cases mean tens of thousands of women.

I can see the RCC simply fading out, more with a whimper than a bang. It’s demise will be brought about mostly by the younger generation. ( younger than I am, anyway). It appears to me that even kids who have had a catholic school education seem to be abandoning it in droves. I think it has become an embarrassment to be associated with an institution with such a murky reputation.

Third world countries are another proposition. Not being kept up to scratch with the latest revelations re the abuses and having propensity for superstition , make these areas easy prey for the RCC and other extreme belief systems. I can see them holding out for a lot longer, or until education is spread evenly across the globe. ( ie not in my lifetime, I shouldn’t think).

I agree and I think that is the main reason a Southern Hemisphere Pope was chosen – and also explains his speeches about the poor.

Basically, they know their days are numbered in the North and they only really have any power left among the poor (and therefore mostly uneducated and ill-informed) of South America and sub-Saharan Africa…

One day, the Roman Catholic Church will be no more powerful or influential (although possibly still more annoying) than the Westboro Baptist Church is now…

  11. If you think that was bad enough, have a look at this

The RCC doing what they do best, this was reported last year, as far as I am aware no one has been interviewed in relation to the incidents!

Another report details the same old same old

It apparemtly does not really end there is goes really weird

Revealing I think…if the Daily Wail got at least 10% of it right that is!

But yet again as far as I know it has seemingly been hushed up, there is nothing reported since these headlines.

  12. And now for some comic relief:
A priest is giving his confession to the Monsignor. He says, “On two occasions when I was alone with Sister Mary Elizabeth, I groped her all over.”
The Monsignor tells him, “You can be forgiven as long as you don’t get into the habit.”

I’ve just googled “Chai Boys” and, yes, they’re the Oriental version of the “Ephebes”, boys used in the ancient Mediterranean civilizations to satisfy the sexual needs of male adults. This habit was due because women weren’t allowed to mingle and socialise with men, women always remained at home. This still happens in many Middle Eastern countries. RC priests are also forced to practise celibacy, hence the child abuse. Protestant clergy and of other religions can marry that’s why they don’t have this high incidence of abuse in their centres.

  14. This is Pope Francis’s big chance to deal with real issues, not just smiles and humility. He should excommunicate all those involved, even posthumously, and assert that their sins are mortal. [Advert removed by moderator]
