Afghan Girls School Poisoning: 74 Girls Poisoned in Suspected Taliban Gas Attack

0

According to Reuters, as many as 74 school girls at the Bibi Hawa Girls High School are feared poisoned after falling sick from smelling a strange gas on Thursday morning. The school, located in Taluquan, the capital of Afghanistan's far North province of Takhar, is only the latest incident of mass poisonings of girls schools — a sadly recurrent tragedy being coordinated by the ultra-conservative elements of Afghan society that believe girls should not be educated.

As President Karzai calls for local leaders to promote fairness and equality in education for women, a right that was granted to women after the fall of the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2001, the Afghan Education Ministry has closed 550 schools across the country due to security concerns, affecting 300,000 students in eleven provinces.

The girls smelled gas and started falling unconscious at the school, and the ensuing chaos involved other classmates crying while police and school officials transported the girls to the provincial hospital. The 8th, 10th, and 11th grade students are receiving treatment at the local hospital, and most were released after being deemed healthy but some are critical condition. Dr. Jamil Frotan, head of the provincial hospital treating the girls, described the ongoing investigation into thepoisoning, saying: "We have already sent samples of their blood to the Ministry of Public Health and it will soon become clear what the reason for their illness was."

  1. That such a twisted and backward religion such as islam believes girls and women should not be educated is bad enough, but if they are now resorting to damaging the health of girls then you are left to wonder is there any depth to which they would not stoop.

  2. they’ve come to believe educated girls are impervious to bullets so trying gas now?

their abject terror of little girls would be comic if it didn’t elicit such a horrific response. I see Iran are blaming women for their earthquakes again.

if it’s too scary, don’t try and domesticate it.

  3. Often enough, you’ll here some of RD’s critics saying something like: “You atheists are just as bad as the fundamentalists that you preach against!”

Well, if that hypothesis were true, we should in principle be able to test it.

We should expect evidence to be forthcoming of RD gassing school girls, just like the Taliban allegedly do; putting a bullet through some of them for learning to read, just like the Taliban did; chopping off the occasional hand for theft, ditto; hanging some adulterers off the nearest tree (or, better, stoning them) for adultery, like the Taliban do; declaring a fatwa on some irreverent author or heathen, like the Ayatollah did.

So come on, Richard. We’re waiting!!

      Has anyone ever said that?

  4. Very sad. Of course not all religions are the same. But Islam does seem to be the worst of the bunch when it comes to violence – against Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus and other Muslims.

  5. The lengths these Taliban turds are willing to go to to ensure that girls and women don’t become more educated than they are is inversely correlated with the size of their brains and scrotal contents. How threatened their egos, how weak their faith, and how ineffectual Allah must be if these idiots have to kill and maim schoolgirls to protect it.
If Islam is so great, how come it can’t withstand the challenge of educated, independent women?

And yet it continues to produce girls and women obsessed with becoming educated independent women despite the attempts of the socially and sexually inadequate men to stop them. Very strong girls and women literally risking their lives to get educated. That is a weird contradiction.

I don’t get your point. Is that Islam producing them, or them doing it by themselves despite their Islamic background and circumstances? How do you explain the above reported events?

  6. Your cause must be hugely worthwhile and you certainly have to be on the side of what is right if your agenda includes poisoning children. Especially young women of your own country!!! I mean smite them for wanting to be able to read…. that HAS to be the correct road.

    Gag, vomit, gag, vomit etc….

  7. If you wanted to prevent the education of women, wouldn’t you simply destroy the school buildings and equipment at night, while the students were away? Is there a concept similar to “love the sinner, hate the sin” in the Taliban’s theology?

They don’t hate the idea of women being educated, they simply hate women.

    • Your point is heartbreakingly right. I am sad because of the clear light you just shined on this issue. At least I see the truth. Thanks.

I really think your wrong about them hating women.

They just don’t like their property thinking for itself.

I think you credit them with too much decency. I think also the West in general has no real idea of the depths of evil to which the Taliban and the like will gladly go. Someone very seriously needs to dismantle and remove all Pakistan’s nuclear weapons capability before it’s too late.

I certainly didn’t mean to credit them with anything. I was making the point that these actions are often described as being anti-education of women, rather than simply anti-women.

It wouldn’t surprise me if they targeted girls’ schools simply because they are places at which women gather. There’s something far sicker than chauvinism going on here – and that’s saying something.

And I agree wholeheartedly about dismantling Pakistan’s nuclear capability; that is a good safeguard. A better one would be striking the Taliban again, and again, and again until it’s just a bitter memory. If the Romans could do it to Carthage, I think civilisation can do it to this anti-civilisation.

  8. Many comments here rightly identify the fear of education as the driver behind this outrage. But it is not only the education of the women that is the central point. These men themselves are primitive beyond our understanding. What ‘education’ have they themselves had other than sitting at the feet of other equally primitive elders telling them stories of winged horses? Until education gains it’s rightful place in these desert shitholes,we can expect more of these outrages.I wonder if Warsi has any comment to make, she has been very quiet of late!

If I’m honest I can’t help thinking Islam is producing them – sadly. There have been other religions oppressing women, the RCC springs to mind, yet you don’t seem to get women in the third world risking anything at all to gain the right to use contraception and didn’t see women in the past in Ireland risking storming things like the Magdelen laundries. No real catholic, christian or atheist Malalas spring to mind.

Yet in Islam you do get that weird contradiction of the sort of total evil misogyny of taliban men, thick as mud, totally inadequate and hence terrified of women getting the sort of educations that would give them economic freedoms alongside women desperate to achieve, risking their lives to go to school and gain economic freedom (probably the only real sort of freedom). Even away from the taliban in more secular countries there seems to be a disproportionate number of high achieving women.

Look closer to home for examples and you find Baroness Warsi. Awful tho she is, bonkers tho her opinions are – she is in a position of influence. And more interestingly – without taking any or her clothes off RD and many of his fans actually know enough of her opinions to disagree! Even the folk here have listened to her enough to slate her! How many fully clothed atheist women could you say that about?

I can’t explain it – thats why I came to this site assuming it would be a place where it would be explained. I can’t work it out at all. Whether the gene pool is trying to compensate for the underachieving taliban men or the fact that girls are less valued means only the toughest survive. Whether the modesty clause in the Koran made them have to work harder to find mates in the past or what. I really don’t know. That is what RD is supposed to do isn’t it? Answer connundrums thrown up by religion and deal with them.
