Detroit-area Catholic leaders urge gay marriage supporters to skip Communion

0

A Detroit professor and legal adviser to the Vatican says Catholics who promote gay marriage should not try to receive holy Communion, a key part of Catholic identity.

And the archbishop of Detroit, Allen Vigneron, told the Free Press Sunday that Catholics who receive Communion while advocating gay marriage would "logically bring shame for a double-dealing that is not unlike perjury."

The comments of Vigneron and Edward Peters, who teaches Catholic canon law at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit, are part of a polarizing discussion about gay marriage that echoes debate over whether politicians who advocate abortion rights should receive Communion.

In a post on his blog last week, Peters said that Catholic teachings make it clear that marriage is between one man and one woman. And so, "Catholics who promote 'same-sex marriage' act contrary to" Catholic law "and should not approach for holy Communion," he wrote. "They also risk having holy Communion withheld from them … being rebuked and/or being sanctioned."

Effectively ex-communicating the flock bit by bit – that’s the way to go!

  1. I love that on the Dawkins home page the lead in for this article drops the word ‘Communion” and simply says “Detroit-area Catholic leaders urge gay marriage supporters to skip.”

I thought it was a spoof at first and the AB in the hat was Eric Idle!

If it was Eric Idle then the picture would be funny instead of deeply sinister.

I suppose the iota of good news from the story is that the Catholic Church is now actively driving away potential victims (instead of passively by: 1- child abuse, 2- failing to cover up child abuse)

  2. They should skip contributing money. That’s what they should skip.

BTW, a bejeweled man playing wizards while wearing a $3500 bright yellow frock gets to proclaim anything at all???? What a strange world.

Hear ye, hear ye, I am dazzling in my wardrobe and will henceforth tell everyone how to live their lives. If you do nood heed my rules, ye shall not be allowed to eat my small wafer that may or may not be human flesh depending upon whom you ask.

    Dour faced asshole.

Love your sarcasm, crooked. I’m going to have to steal some of it for Facebook. Hope you don’t mind.

  3. Good. The Catholic church has clearly stated it’s rules to it’s members. Excellent. Now it’s up to Catholics to either tow the line or to decide that their own values are not in line with those of their church. I hope every Catholic will realize that they are supporting a vile sexist, homophobic organization (that’s just for starters) and I hope you find the courage and clarity of mind to get up and walk out of the Church. Stop attending and stop giving these despicable people your hard earned money.

People of Detroit- This is America. You have the right to change religions or to not participate in religion at all. We’re lucky. There are other countries in this world that kill people who try to resist religious brainwashing. Despite their stupid, frilly, embroidered, lace dresses, these men are just a bunch of deluded bigots who want to control your thoughts and behavior. Walk away and set a good example for others who are good, kind people and are confused and conflicted by the preachings and actions of the despicable Catholic church.

If you stay, don’t be surprised when outsiders judge you by the company you keep.

  4. That’s fine by me, I’ve skipped communion for the past 30 years or so. I’m still looking for a way to get excommunicated without having to performing a satanic ritual or something like that.

  5. The Catholic Church seems to be run by geologists: issues requiring immediacy are filed under sedimentary (condoms/nuns with questions) while child rape, no doubt, is filed under igneous.

Roman Catholic Church – it is crumbling into dust before our eyes. It’s demise will be a deliverance from evil

Dont deceive yourself. It is certainly not crumbling to dust before my eyes. I live about 1km from the Vatican in Rome and the number of pilgrims clogging up the area is growing since the new pope was elected. Every Wednesday and Sunday there are hundreds of thousands of people at St Peters to see the new “nice” pope……and it is not even the busy summer holiday season yet!

      • In reply to #39 by RomeStu:

        the new “nice” pope

It should be telling when the pope elect is the lesser of two evils :/

the church wants to help catholics avoid this personal disaster (“perjury”, et.al.)

Look bub, as Eleanor Roosevelt said “no one can make you feel bad without your permission”. At least they’re being honest and not hurting anyone.

Back at the ranch, last fall the bishop of Kansas City-St. Joseph Diocese was found guilty (a first in the u.s.) by a judge of grossly mishandling information he was party to pertaining to a local priest charged with abuse. i.e another priest gone bad and a cover up.

  6. Its been a long time since I was an altar boy but from what I remember the only time you couldn’t get communion is if you hadn’t confessed a serious sin which was more or less disobeying the ten commandments. So I don’t see how supporting gay marriage qualifies as something you even have to confess let alone not get communion for.

It’s Commandment Number 13 – Thou Shalt Not Support Gay Marriage.

In case you’ve forgotten, it’s just after Number 12: Thou Shalt Not Make Up Any New Commandments.

      Ooops.

I left Number 11 alone, it is after all the most important when it comes to the priesthood: Thou Shalt Not Get Caught.

  7. Aren’t they supposed to be gaily and joyously married to the church (and each other if the complaints of abuse are to be believed), .. . . and wearing such pretty wedding dresses too!! (Who’s a bunch of pretty boys!!)

What was it they were saying again??

  8. Surely the worlds largest paedophile protection racket cannot be expected to tolerate the rampant immorality of people who think that gay people are human beings deserving of equal rights? No, the church is taking a stand for decency and morality, and deserves praise and accolades for doing so.

  9. to receive Communion and deny the revelation Christ entrusted to the church is to try** to say two contradictory things at once**

and we all know that the church never tries two say two contradictory things at once! funny how they sometimes try to make use of reason

  10. The RCC tries to control the lay population orienting political and civil life decisions, in here (Portugal) the RCC warned that those who voted pro abortion on a referendum couldn´t have a catholic funeral (know that it is not democratic, sense the vote is secret and personal as an act of political freedom that is). The RCC joined also a political party to advice the believer voters not to give their vote to the comunist party.
And…even gives orientation through it´s patriarch cardinal (without having a degree on Biology) about evolution on a midnight mass… and about science which is of course accordingly to Ratzinguer´s words utilitarian, but the “spiritual” part belongs to them… (I wonder how is it possible to criticise Marxist historical materialism when using the same reduction and division- happily that attitude of considering science not “spiritual” was critized by Bachelard.

    • Hello Portugal!

Thank you for your very good contribution! I hope the catholic churches there are slowly emptying just like the ones in Germany. Obrigado!

A friend of mine grew up in Malta , and said that during 60′s (?) voters were threatened with excommunication if they voted Labour. I asked how they would know as the ballot is secret. She replied that is a small country and THEY’D KNOW!

  11. You know, there probably isn’t one catholic who isn’t against ONE piece of doctrine. Jesus blood washes away all those sins.

But not hating gay people? That’s up there with blaspheming the Holy Spirit.

  12. No cracker for you if you support gay marriage. Pathetic. The RCC shows its true colors yet again. Also shows how desperate and out of touch with reality they really are. Living anachronisms. The world will be a better place without them.

  13. This isn’t all of the RCC:

“Most American bishops do not favor denying either politicians or voters Communion because of their positions on controversial issues,” said Thomas Reese, a Catholic priest and senior fellow at the Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown University. Reese said that Peters’ views are “in a minority among American canon lawyers.”

Which is why you will not find mass desertions over this issue. Lots of Catholics will just dismiss it as the usual nutters in the Church complaining.

  14. TL;DR: Pickle-brained celibate men afflicted with blue balls won’t let you cannibalize the body of an Iron Age carpenter if you don’t heed the dictates of the Almighty Three-For-The-Price-Of-One.

This is saddening news indeed. ಥ_ಥ

  15. The tone of this article seems to imply that the catholic church should change their stance on what they believe or at least not say what they believe. I completely disagree with this and find it is exactly what is wrong with society. This is what the catholics are meant to believe, why is anyone surprised?

If people don’t like it they should vote with their feet. Catholics I know who want the church to progress with the times are just hitching their wagon to an institution that because it is faith based will resist every change that challenges any of its orthodoxies. What’s more the catholics are right (if they are to follow the bible) to condemn homosexuality, it is stated very clearly in the bible that homosexuals should be stoned to death. The catholics are hypocrites to the extent that they do not in principle support this stance. So I applaud the catholic hierarchy for saying it like it is and only hope this leads to people looking carefully at the organization they so blindly follow.

  16. I was under the impression that the entire Catholic system was based on believing “two contradictory things at once.” Isn’t it a prerequisite? Hell, by definition the Trinity requires believing THREE!

Catholics must be a masochistic lot; constantly having their inherent inadequacy and unworthiness pointed out to them by these zombies, and always coming back willingly for more.

  17. The archbishop is quite right. All those people should quit his church. There won’t be many left though.

How many of his congregation have only one or two kids. They must be practising contraception. They should all leave. How many of his flock love and accept their gay friends and relatives? They should all leave.

Oh…… and how many of his priests have buggered children. They should all leave too.

  18. And you know what? I have no problem with this. Roman Catholics are supposed to do what the Pope tells them. If they don’t the Pope and his underlings have every right to tell to sod off. I would encourage this kind of thing for the same reason the late Mr Hitchens thought people should read the bible more.

Nothing else will encourage atheism faster.

  19. In other news, it has been reported that Holy Jo will be hosting a fancy dress party in the Sistine Chapel. Sorry gals ! Only blokes invited. The prize for the nicest hat wins a confession with an altar boy.

In other news, it has been reported that a group of women in suits and ties considered crashing Holy Jo’s fancy dress party for blokes but decided that those guys at Jo’s party were giving cross dressers a bad name and decided to steer clear of them.

  20. So, gay marriage supporters in the congregation aren’t worthy of drinking Christ’s blood and eating his flesh – but gay priests are? Pedophiliac priests? Wow, they really respect the sacraments, don’t they?
Never mind the cannibal overtones of the stupid, pointless rite – it’s the hypocrisy that really gets me. The sooner this socially parasitic organization dies, the better.

  21. The centre one looks mad, the one behind him on our left looks thuggish and ready to carry out to the letter any orders given to him, and the one behind on our right seems a bit worried about something; perhaps he’s gay?

  22. I have a completely fool-proof solution to this problem: if you don’t like the dogma of a particular religion, but still want to be religious, just found your own religion and make up whatever dogma suits you. After all that’s what the Catholic Church does every time they invent a new saint for their pantheon (and how they got started come to that).

  23. shakes head

It never ceases to disturb me that a religious institution bent on continuing to molest and rape its underage parish has not only the audacity to judge the definition of an institution that is in fact not a religious practice but a legal one, but that people still follow a single one of its practices based on the behavior of these clowns.

This just in, the RCC does yet something else ridiculous and doesn’t expect to be held accountable. Details at 6…..

  24. This really is a good thing. On the one hand, telling American Catholics they aren’t good enough for the RCC anymore is a great way to alienate them. And if this archbishop is trolling because he sincerely thinks it’s time for reformation, he knows there’s no better way than to pretend to be a dick who represents the church. If the new pope has any inkling of strategy, he’ll tell this guy to shut the hell up.

You would think that a religious leader in Detroit would be far more worried about the murder and poverty rates of the city.

Yes. Recently, an emergency city manager was appointed by the state to take over Detroit.

People are hurting, these bozos ain’t helping. Wish they would make like “mama Elena’s evil ghost” and disappear into nothingness.

  25. I didn’t have the pleasure of receiving a religious upbringing, so forgive my ignorance, but I thought that when your man died on the cross, that basically wiped out a lot of the Old Testament stuff (wherein the bits about how you mustn’t be gay can be found), which is why Christians can eat pork and shellfish and so on and do all the things that Jews aren’t allowed to, or not do the things that Jews have to, if you take my meaning.

    Galatians 3:13 – 14:

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law…

I don’t understand why this covenant, as I think it’s called, means it’s fine for Christians to partake in a bacon sandwich or some lobster bisque but if you’re a man who likes other men’s bottoms, you’re going to Hell.

  26. This bit seems to put it in better context. In short, there’s been a widening disparity between the values of American Catholics and the Roman Catholic Church.

    http://www.freep.com/article/20130409/COL43/304090007

And yeah, the pic is pretty scary. I suspect the DFP intended it so.

I’ll have to ask my Catholic friends how they hold the absolutism of the Church in tandem with the more relaxed values of mainstream US (even getting a bit liberal).

Similarly, the Leadership Conference of Women Religious is getting audited or inquisited or something by the Vatican since the former believes that tackling global poverty, hunger and strife should be higher priorities than hating on gays and women. Seriously, we seem to be lousy with religious people freaked out about our sex lives beyond all sensibilities.

  27. I’m an atheist, I go to church every Sunday because it makes my mother happy to see me there, it makes her happy to see me take communion. I’m 61 years old, I am pro-choice, pro same sex marriage, for insurance coverage of birth control, for family planning, I am a “7″, I don’t hate “God”, because there is no “God” for me to hate and I believe that the Catholic Church is the most corrupt institution in the history of civilization. I go to Church every Sunday with my 82 year old mother, for one reason and one reason only, and that is, because it makes her happy to see me there.. If they want to kick me out, I’m good, however, they’re going to have a lot of explaining to do to my mother, who happens to be very rich and a benefactor to the Catholic Charities… I’m keeping my fingers crossed… :-)

  28. “Monkeys succumb to peer pressure”

“Detroit-area Catholic leaders urge gay marriage supporters to skip”

I think it would look better if the photos were swapped.
