Ohio Catholic school teacher fired after ‘appalled’ parent learned she was gay

An Ohio woman was fired from her job of 19 years at a Catholic high school after being outed as gay.

But the Columbus, Ohio, community has rallied around Carla Hale, circulating a petition urging her reinstatement to Bishop Watterson High School.

“It’s amazing that they’ve come together and rallied around this situation,” Hale told the Columbus Dispatch. “I’m in awe of them.”

The physical education teacher took time off from school in February in the wake of her mother’s death. Her mother’s obituary mentioned Hale and her female partner as survivors, which attracted the attention of an “appalled” parent.

“If not for an obituary that appeared in the paper, none of this would be happening,” she said.

Give credit where credit is due. This is because of a bigoted cult and the ignorant beliefs of one of its bigoted followers. It has nothing to do with an obit.

Spot on! Can’t blame religion so as always it gets a free pass to practice its gitishness

I don’t think that was the point of her comment at all. I think the point was that she wanted to say “The fact that I could do my job just fine all these years and until the obituary nobody even knew I was gay is proof it doesn’t matter.”

  2. “If not for an obituary that appeared in the paper, none of this would be happening,” she said.

Allow me to present an alternative statement: “If not for a group of bigoted, small-minded people, none of this would be happening,” she said.

The fact that she was outed in the obituary might be what lead her to be fired, but does she really like the idea of living in a community in which she can work only because her private life is kept a secret, surrounded by people who harbour crazy thoughts about her lifestyle?

  3. Petitions, petition, go ahead, but I say shame them by blasting it all over the media. Include the name of the parent who was appalled. On one hand, I feel horrible that this woman has lost her job due to ignorance. On the other hand, she deserves better – better pay, better treatment, not having to worry about being found out by some snoopy parent digging into an obit. Tax the churches; they do not provide any community service. I’m fuming mad because this is not far from where I live. AGAIN people- gay people who are still Catholic, stop going to church! Tomorrow at the beginning of the homily, stand up look at the priest, turn and leave to never return.

I bet a lot of parents figured out her sexuality a long time ago and were just playing “don’t-ask-don’t-tell” because they respected her as a teacher.

I would imagine they guessed as well, people often speculate. But I’d add they were playing the “don’t ask cos don’t really care card” regardless of whether they respected her as a teacher.

The report says the parent was annoymou

That parent wrote an anonymous letter to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Columbus, and administrators responded by firing Hale later in March for violating a morality clause.

so my moneys on the ‘parent’ really being the Roman Catholic Diocese of Columbus who I’d guess had been just waiting for the evidence to do something. When parents complain about teachers it is usually only because of their teaching.

We need to get to the stage where we/people don’t even think about a person’s sexual preferences.

  4. The story tells that the “appalled” parent wrote an anonymous letter. The teacher was fired for “violating a morality clause”.

WHAT GROTESQUE HYPOCRISY! DIDN’T THE PRIESTS THAT ABUSED AND RAPED CHILDREN FOR YEARS, AND THE HIERARCHY REACHING ALL THE WAY TO THE POPE THAT CONTINUED TO EMPLOY THEM AND PROTECTED, CONDONED AND COVERED UP THEIR CRIMES, HAVE A MORALITY CLAUSE IN THEIR CONTRACTS?!

I suppose we just have to understand they’re just different sort of morality clauses to the rest of the human race. Sort of ‘absence of morality’ morality clauses. One the one hand we have a adult in a stable loving relationship with another adult with both consenting to sex and not destroying any lives in doing so, or even hurting anyones feelings – oh dearie me. The total epitome of morals to most of us using human race morality guidelines.

On the other we have rape and abuse, preferably with people too young to give consent anyway and too scared to tell. Just utterly destroying lives, leaving people with long term physical and mental damage. So if you want to engage in sex with someone terrified and begging you to stop – but are worried about feeling guilty or getting caught try RCC morality. Rape and abuse to your hearts content – brand new parish, brand new victims AND complete protection from the law as added extras. But if you choose the loving adults route beware. If it ain’t the right gender of adult you’ll lose your whole career and the kids you love teaching.

So grotesque hypocrisy was a brilliant choice of words.
