At least 32 killed in Bangladesh uproar over ‘blasphemous blogging’

0

Thirty two people were killed and hundreds injured as a rally in the capital of Bangladesh turned violent. Police used tear gas to disperse thousands of Islamist protesters in the streets of Dhaka who demanded execution for “blasphemous” blogging.

The protesters are reportedly the activists from the Hefajat-e-Islam group, which blames some Internet users for blasphemy; accusing people of using their blogs to spread atheism and apparent lies about Islam.

"One point, One demand: Atheists must be hanged", chanted the demonstrators as they marched along at least six highways, blocking transport between Dhaka and other cities and towns.

The demonstrators gathered in the capital’s Motijheel commercial district, amounting to between 150,000 to 200,000 people according to AFP. On their way, they set shops and vehicles on fire, according to police accounts.

Police used rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the protesters after they reportedly set off homemade explosives and threw stones at security. Local authorities had to deploy more than 15,000 security forces to the area.

  1. Quote via The Times of India: “Hefazat-e-Islam or ‘Protectorate of Islam’ enforced their ‘Dhaka siege’ programme to mount pressure on the moderate Awami League-led government to implement their 13-point demand including the enactment of a blasphemy law to punish those who insult Islam and the Prophet.”

Here is their full 13-point plan:

    1. Restore the phrase ‘Complete faith and trust in the Almighty Allah’ in the constitution and repeal all the laws contrary to the holy Quran and Sunnah.

    2. Pass a law in parliament keeping a provision of the maximum punishment of death sentence to prevent defaming Allah, Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) and Islam and smear campaigns against Muslims.

    3. Take measures for stringent punishment against self-declared atheists and bloggers, led the so-called Shahbagh movement, and anti-Islamists who made derogatory remarks against the Prophet.

    4. Stop infiltration of all alien-culture, including shamelessness in the name of individual’s freedom of expression, anti-social activities, adultery, free mixing of male and female and candle lighting.

    5. Make Islamic education mandatory from primary to higher secondary levels canceling the anti-Islamic women policy and anti-religion education policy.

    6. Officially declare Qadianis (Ahmadiyyas) as non-Muslim and stop their propaganda and all conspiratorial ill-moves.

    7. Stop setting up sculptures at intersections, schools, colleges and universities across the country.

    8. Lift restriction on saying payers in all mosques across the country, including Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, without any hassle and remove obstacles to carrying out religious activities.

    9. Stop evil efforts to spread hatred in the mind of young generation regarding Islam through the misrepresentation of religious dresses and cultures in the media.

    10. Stop anti-Islam activities by NGOs across the country, including in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, and evil attempts of Christian missionaries for conversion.

    11. Stop attacks, mass killing, oppression and indiscriminate shooting on Alem-Ulama, devout followers of the Prophet and towhidi janata (revolutionary people).

    12. Stop threatening teachers and students of Qawmi madrasas, Islamic scholars, imams and khatibs and conspiracies against them.

    13. Free immediately all the arrested Islamic scholars, madrasa students and towhidi janata and withdraw all false cases filed against them, compensate the victims and bring the assailants to justice.

… seems unnecessary, telling the truth about Islam is far more effective at discrediting it than telling lies or smearing it.

Honestly, this is what surprises me most. What the hell is wrong with candles? Hating human beings and freedom is not enough? Must they hate light sources/inanimate objects as well?

I think it’s because they fear setting their beards on fire…

It’s an interesting question, this is all I’ve found out so far:

Muslims avoid lighting candles in connection with death rituals and the like, as this is seen as a form of imitation of non-Muslim behavior. They are often used as decorative elements.

  2. It’s the imams who stir up all this hateful puerile dangerous stupidy. The imams should be taken out of the mosques and madrasahs and put away for keeps. These evil men are preaching murder and mayhem the world over. Catch them, lock them up and throw away the keys.

Being incarcerated didn’t prevent Syed Qutb from becoming a jihadist idealogue.

  3. They want to stop “free mixing of male and female and candle lighting” Wow, how feeble is this religion that this is on the agenda of the rioters. “They lit a candle together, grrrrr my bloods boiling” It sounds like a deep routing feeling of male jealousy through having been rejected by a girl.
No wonder they hate the West, we let couples hold hands, talk to each other and their friends, cuddle in public etc. They’d have a heart attack here

  4. Theists have a strange notion of freedom. Stop infiltration of alien culture? Does this extend to banning the use of reinforced concrete and other fiendish devices like horseless carriages and flying with the aid of technology?

    AND NO infernal candle lighting?

    Islam is an extinguisher

Yes, let’s stop infiltration of alien culture into Bangladesh – starting with Islam itself, which is a foreign, alien culture, ‘imported’ during the Muslim conquest of Bengal in the early 13th century…

    • In reply to #8 by ArloNo:

What a ridiculous waste of human life. Very sad.

Indeed – of all the things to die for, religious suicide is the most pointless and wasteful.

It’s not as if they are going to receive any reward from their imaginary god…

  5. A rational response to evil, fundamentalist, ignorant, parasites. I have no sympathy at all for the protesters. For once I urge the government forces use more rubber bullets, most of the world is behind you.

  6. Bangladesh has many problems, but it is constitutionally a secular democracy and long may it remain so.

These protestors do not appear to appreciate the irony of being allowed to take to the streets to protest (as long as they do so peacefully…) in favour of a law which will deny anyone else the right to do the same in future.

Whilst any loss of life is regrettable, the government – and the police – are simply defending the status quo in preventing a position where, next time round, it will be Islamist fanatics dictating who the police should turn their guns on.

  7. Surely they could just sit back and feel smug that Allah will back them in what they want? A bit of praying here, bit of misogyny there and the good old Muhammad might stop raping all his virgins long enough to throw them a bone. To paraphrase Darth Vader, their lack of faith disturbs me…

  8. “The protesters are reportedly the activists from the Hefajat-e-Islam group, which blames some Internet users for blasphemy; accusing people of using their blogs to spread atheism and apparent lies about Islam.”

I wonder what lies these atheists have spread about Islam. From the behaviour of these Islamists, I could image such lies might include:

    • Islam is a peaceful religion
    • Islam is tolerant of other religions and atheists
    • Islam is respectful of women
  9. Separation of men and women, banning of sculptures, restricting free speech (including censoring the internet), banning all criticisms of Mohammad and Islam, conforming the constitution along theocratic lines – I hope the bloggers, the non-believers or anyone opposing these factions win. Otherwise, we are going to have two of the most medi-evil, bronze age, reactionary nations (Pakistan and Bangladesh) with sharia and blasphemy laws, stultifying the growth of their children, poisoning the minds of people with violent and delusional ideologies, and threatening to destabilize the entire region with possible spillovers onto neighboring states in India, which has itself been the target of reactionary religious violence on numerous occasions. Ominous signs – need more people from the region to speak out against such bullying, and those who are in danger – the rest of us who are in relative safety must be courageous on their behalf.

  10. Police used rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the protesters after they reportedly set off homemade explosives and threw stones at security.

I generally prefer police to use non lethal force, but in this case they should have used real bullets.

Why? The rubber bullets and tear gas seem to have done the job in dispersing these people. Would you rather it had been more of a bloodbath? It’s the task of the police to contain and defuse situations like this one; not to create carnage of their own.

      • Thanks Katy, looks like an enormous own goal. What arseholes and pity the poor police!

Who are the dead and why?

According to the Graun, at least 3 of the dead were police officers, and at least 15 were protesters.

  11. The irony here is that this group does more to defame Islam than all the the bloggers and atheists in the world.

If there’s to be a cure for radical Islam, it will have to come from within Islam itself. More moderate factions of the faith are going to have get tired of putting up with the disruptions, the self-inflicted consequences of Islamaphobia and getting lumped in with the kooks and act to fix the problem. Not holding my breath though.

  12. Why are muslims like this? Methinks it is because they are bound by a dogma that is so shitty, horrible and mirthless and because they are sex starved with no outlet other than hating those of us who have worthwhile and meaningful lives with ready access to the opposite sex (or the same sex with out the risk of being murdered). All they want to do is behave like spoiled brats and smash everything up to spoil everything for everyone else. Islam is a religion of pure hatred – hatred of self, hatred of everybody else and all things on this earth. No wonder they love death.

Yeah, I think islam really is a case of “If we can’t have it, you can’t have it either!”; “it” being freedom, education and openness.

  13. So their points include the direct persecution of a Muslim subset, a call for the stopping of persecution of revolutionaries and a call for the stopping of persecution of their particular religious subset.

They sound like a separatist movement rather than a religious group.

And the Candle thing is nuts, they also really dislike statues of leaders and heroes. Do they think they will be worshiped or something.
