Eric Ohena Lembembe, Gay Rights Activist, Tortured And Killed

0

A prominent gay rights activist in Cameroon was tortured and killed just weeks after issuing a public warning about the threat posed by "anti-gay thugs," Human Rights Watch said.

Friends discovered the body of Eric Ohena Lembembe at his home in the capital, Yaounde, on Monday evening after he was unreachable for two days, the rights group said in a statement Tuesday.

One friend said Lembembe's neck and feet looked broken and that he had been burned with an iron.

Lembembe was among the most prominent activists in one of Africa's most hostile countries for sexual minorities. First as a journalist and later as executive director of CAMFAIDS, a Yaounde-based human rights organization, he documented violence, blackmail and arrests targeting members of Cameroon's gay community. He was also a regular contributor to the Erasing 76 Crimes blog, which focuses on countries where homosexuality is illegal, and he wrote several chapters of a book released in February on the global gay rights movement titled "From Wrongs to Gay Rights."

  1. If your side of the argument includes hurting… torturing….killing….hiding…etc… How can you even proffer the notion that you are in any way CLOSE to correct?

Hate rules the day, yet again. I cannot begin to verbalize how much I need the world to change. FFS, I have students and children that I need to introduce to this world. The very people looking to change it for the better are the ones being slaughtered by the “good” folks. AND, these monsters, capable of doing this to a human being (or a cat, for that matter) will go on thinking they did good and anticipate the pearly gates upon their death. Only belief in religion can do this to a person’s logic centers.

Why is it that the innocent always suffer at the hands of the fools?

That’s an easy one crookedshoes, they all have a handy book that condones their behaviour – nay INSISTS on the behaviour. Religion poisons everything.

      • Yep. What a book. Responsible for so so so much pain. Better if it never existed.

Keep in mind this sort of thing was going on in Canada in 1970 and the the perpetrator would not be punished.

Yep…and 50 years before that people with the wrong coloured skin were being lynched in the states, and 50 years before that women couldn’t vote anywhere in the world…still, something needs done about this shit before the morally superior Christian brotherhood murder any more innocents in the name of their insidious religion. Wouldn’t you agree? The Christians have a brass neck saying anything about them Muslims… That’s if it was the Christians that did it and not the feck in’ Muslims.

Fifa recently suspended Cameroon from international football because the country’s football federation was not seen to be free from government interference. Perhaps there should be a sporting boycott similar to South Africa under apartheid.

Unfortunately people who excuse their bigoted ways with reference to their religion, most often do not receive the condemnation they deserve.

It’s heartbreaking to look at this young man’s face and think about how cruelly he was beaten and killed.

    It is; it is.

Sadly, this kind of so-called “mob justice,” as this may well be, is not uncommon in many parts of the world. There’s a video knocking around on YouTube showing a group of about 4 “witches,” elderly men and women accused of witchcraft, being beaten and then burned alive. Really, I can’t add a link to it; it’s too distressing to watch.

I’ve personally seen this sort of thing. A group of rapid men, they are usually men, set upon some hapless individual. Within minutes, the poor guy was torn to bits and then shot dead. At the end of it, his tormentors exchanged satisfied looks; their blood-thirst had been quenched.

Mankind’s inhumanity to each other; when will it end?

  4. I’d like to say that I could be a better person but I can’t. Whenever I see a crime like this I don’t want imprisonment I want to see these people put in as terrible and terrifying a situation as that man was and I want it to end the same way. I understand that this is wrong but it doesn’t mean I don’t like it.
