Jailed: Charged With Sedition For Inciting Religious Enmity

0

Sex bloggers Alvin Tan and Vivian Lee have been charged and imprisoned without bail in Malaysia after they posted a photo offensive to Muslims on their Facebook page. They face up to eight years in prison.

The photo in question featured the duo eating pork stew, "bah kuh teh," while greeting fasting Muslims for Ramadan.

The image was construed as highly offensive given the fact that pork is considered haram, or forbidden, to Muslims, and they put a halal, or permissible, logo on the post. Though they claimed they meant the picture to be humorous, it's been perceived as highly disrespectful and provocative given the content of the photo and the occupation of the uploaders, who have a Youtube channel called "Sexcussions with Alvivi" and an erotic blog.

Pornography is illegal in both Malaysia and Singapore, where Tan used to be a law student at the National University of Singapore, though he was stripped of his ASEAN scholarship after the public outcry against their X-rated blog.

The Muslim-majority country defines sedition as actions that spread ill will among people of different races, and is considered a serious crime.

  1. “The Muslim-majority country defines sedition as actions that spread ill will among people of different races”

As the purpose of religion is to create distinctions between groups where none should exist, shouldn’t every person claiming to follow a religion be in jail?

  2. There are similar jokes all the time on the comedy Big Bang Theory where they tease the Howard Wolowitz about breaking Kosher.

This little joke is even gentler. The folk in the image are presumably ignorant non-Muslims who don’t know very much about Islam. There is no implication any Muslim is breaking Halal.

I had a Muslim friend. He said, I don’t care what you do but please don’t eat pig. It is just unbelievably disgusting. Have you seen how disgusting and filthy they are? Eating dog and eating pig are probably the ultimate degradations. To understand the image the way Muslims would imagine some strings of dog vomit or dog poo on the chopsticks.

Who the f*ck cares? What I eat is my business. I find eating animal flesh disgusting, but I don’t go around preaching about it. I don’t care what their perspective is.

  3. Caught smoking a joint in Malaysia? Death penalty.

The funny thing is, parts of Malaysia are high tech, looking much like the USA. You have a strange mixture of the ancient, the military and high tech.

The thing that stuck in my mind about Kuala Lumpur the most were the puffs of sulphurous steam coming out of holes in the streets. It is visually striking with towering ancient urban trees, and thousands of potted plants and but the stench is unbearable.

  4. This merry couple aren’t eating any pork at all. In fact, they’re eating chicken and they’re wishing Muslims a happy end of Ramadan. Where’s the crime? Their lawyers should based their defence on this: it’s chicken, stupids, not pork!

OK, they’re eating pork, but they apologise for it. Therefore the “sin” must be forgiven and forgotten. That’s what religions say. Now, release this couple immediately!

  5. Of course one of the first things a religion tries to do is make itself appear important and significant. Humour tends to be a very effective way of puncturing this self aggrandisement. AFAICS Islam is devoid of any sense of humour. Whilst Jews tell the best anti-Semitic jokes, and even the odd Christians can have a chuckle about their faith, Islam is apparently unable to stomach humour or criticism of any kind. Bloody hell, a couple of sex bloggers can’t even enjoy a meal together without upsetting the Muslims.

No doubt the Brits, when they had control over the then Malaya, encouraged the “religion of peace” as a means of keeping the local population subjugated. Religion – a useful tool for the rulers, even if it’s all bollocks !

  6. The sooner “taking offence” is replaced with “being ignorant and backed by traditionally enforced bigotry” the better.
Reprehensible filth wearing the praise and cloths of religion maketh nothing but the first two words of this sentence.

  7. Remember the days when you’d bring you camera to dinner. Take a few pictures of your meal. Then the next day run over to the film development shop. Wait a few more days. Pick up your photos and snail mail copies of your dinner to all your friends? Me neither.

    Facebook is stupid.

  8. My, my, my…boo-friggety hoo – Almighty Allah and his sidekick Mohammed are so thin-skinned that their delicate sensibilities are irreparably harmed by a couple of irreverent comedians. I guess Allah and Mohammed can’t stick up for themselves, so they have to let their followers overreact to every little kerfuffle. Otherwise, the world as they know it would come to a shattering end! Wait…no it won’t! But still….can’t let anyone have any fun, just in case Allah gets bent.

  9. “The Muslim-majority country defines sedition as actions that spread ill will among people of different races, and is considered a serious crime.”

My experience of life in Malaysia is that spreading ill will among people of different races is only a problem when it is directed towards Muslims. When other groups are targeted, it’s not a problem. I remember an incident where a majority Malay MP (Muslim) said something along the lines that the ethnic Chinese were not true Malaysians (even though they have been in Malaysia for many generations) and they should stop complaining, they were lucky to have any rights at all. When a Chinese MP complained about this blatant racism, he was told to stop stirring up trouble.

  10. From a theoretical perspective, the best course of action that one should take with regards to this case is to simply ignore them. It appears that these two young people are doing this solely for the attention & the controversy, and by dealing it with such force, would actually be a bit absurd. However, from a PRACTICAL perspective, this harsh penalty is necessary. With regards to Malaysia, the various ethnic groups would generally adhere to a handful of religions. The Malays, for example, are primarily muslim, the Chinese are either Daoist or Buddhist, &c. Therefore, when a person attacks or otherwise offends a religion, the people see it as a indirect attack on that particular ethnic group, or at least an attack on their culture. Suffice to say however, that insults and provocations do nothing to further any meaningful discussion, & that any opinion voiced should be done in a respectful manner, & respect to other’s culture and religion.

That’s insane. If people take offense, they can vent their emotions in lawful ways as civilized people do, or go to jail as criminals do. When you start locking up the people who firebomb buildings and behead innocents when they get offended, you tend to notice a distinct improvement in the quality of your society. That the government of Malaysia cannot or will not do this does not speak well of them.

It is never acceptable to allow people to kill or destroy property because they are offended. The sooner this is learned, the sooner countries like this will be able to enter the civilized world.

We’re supposed to learn about pragmatism from someone who believes in ghosts?

  11. I’m not sure if these guys are stupid or were trying to prove a point, or what. Allow me to do the chorus of Bad, Bad, Leroy Brown: You don’t pull on superman’s cape. You don’t spit in to the wind. You don’t pull the mask of the old lone ranger. And you don’t film your dumbass eating pork in Malaysia. I do feel bad for these guys, but unless they’re new in town, they surely new better.
