Rabbis in Spiritual Crisis: Dr. Paul Shrell-Fox

6

This talk is mostly in Hebrew and the screens which show the translation are not visible, but the intro is worth watching for English speakers and for those who speak Hebrew the whole talk is worth listening to as it addresses an important issue in Judaism.

All talks from the conference are here

Update: 30-Jul pm

It is a surprising study similar to Linda LaScola and Dan Dennett's on the Christian clergy. We think it is important. We are trying to get the English version with the simultaneous translation.

  1. Obviously I couldn’t understand the Hebrew (and it seemed that all the questioners, too, preferred English anyway, in which the lecturer too was totally fluent) but I was amused by the argument articulated by the first questioner: if Darwin turns out to be right, religious people should give even MORE praise to God because, instead of creating each species separately, he created a factory for making species.

What a STUNNINGLY poor argument. What an eloquent monument to special pleading! And the poor fellow seemed to have no idea what a transparently self-defeating argument he was shouting about. This is a vivid example of what we are up against when we try to fathom the theist mind.

It’s just another example of moving the goalpost.

Um, if “Darwin turns out to be right,” then orthodox Jews will be (or at least should be) forced to admit that Rosh Hashanah is a holiday that commemorates a completely fictitious event…Namely, the creation of the universe and all life as we know it, which took place 5,774 years ago this September, beginning with a man, then a woman, then a talking snake.

    • Dear Richard
I hope you will explain why this is a STUNNINGLY poor argument. It seems to me that such a proposition is strikingly similar to intelligent software that is able to detect problems within itself and improve its own version by spawning code and creating an additional, new edition of itself.

Or in the case of camps like Auschwitz, factories for trying to destroy, at least, part of a species ?

God always gets the credit for good things, – never the blame for anything bad !
