Maldives rape victim spared the lash after global anger

A 15-year-old girl who faced 100 lashes in the Maldives after she was raped by her step-father has had the sentence overturned following an international campaign.

The child, who cannot be named, was handed the draconian flogging sentence for “fornication” in February, triggering a petition by the global campaign network Avaaz and anger from opposition and women’s rights groups in the country. Two million people worldwide signed the petition calling for the sentence to be commuted.

Last week, the Maldivian High Court overturned the sentence, which was hailed as a victory by Avaaz. But the organisation said that the case was a one-off and called for a moratorium on all flogging sentences in the Maldives, which is under the Islamic government of President Mohammed Waheed Hassan.

The girl has been under house arrest on an island near the capital Malé since her sentence. She is now free but campaigners hope she will remain in the care of the state to continue her education, rather than be returned to her family where she could be at risk of further abuse.

  1. ” Nine out of 10 sentences for flogging in the Maldives in 2011 were given to women, while no one has been convicted of rape in the past three years.”

    What?!?!?

This type of barbarity will stand until that two million petitioners turn into six billion people ( less many muslims in the world ) willing to stop this nonsense.

I am sure many Western woman’s rights organizations are “on the job here. “

  2. This is just too sad for words. Why does it take the “world” to show this for what it is? Why can’t these morons figure this out for themselves. If all of them were lined up and whipped maybe some sense would work its way in there???

  3. A stunningly beautiful part of the world, that I have wanted to visit since I was a child, turned hideously ugly through man’s inhumanity. More power to Avaaz, and their ilk; a pox on Hassan and his enablers.

Under Sharia Law, a rape victim must produce four male witnesses. When a woman or girl reports a rape without having four male witnesses she is effectively confessing to illegal sex. I read that something like 75% of women in Pakistani prisons are there because they have been raped. Seems cruel and barbaric to me, but who I am to criticise the wise and merciful creator of the universe?

  5. Who wears the clothes in the shop window shown in the photograph at the head of this article?
Answer – The tourists who bring the money upon which the country depends.
If the big tour operators stopped dealing with the Maldives then a change in regime can be forced.

In a few years the place will be drowned anyway unless of course allah chooses to hold back the waters.

    • I recently heard that they can wear what they like at home or UNDER the traditional burka / hijab / whatever. Lots of specialty clothing shops in Saudi Arabia for rich women..

  6. This is one reason why I hate religion. The woman in society are not as equal to their male counterparts which makes me think that religion is just a controlling culture. Muslims must end this barbarity otherwise the world will see you are mindless race of people.

Muslims are a race, are they?

      Choose your targets better.

Clerics and religious leaders must end this barbarity. We must always target those who can make the difference. They are, after all the interpreters.

Muslim leaders can think entirely otherwise-

Massoud is adamant that in Afghanistan women have suffered oppression for generations. He says that ‘the cultural environment of the country suffocates women. But the Taliban exacerbate this with oppression.’ His most ambitious project is to shatter this cultural prejudice and so give more space, freedom and equality to women — they would have the same rights as men.

  7. If any country deserves to disappear under the rising sea levels it’s the medieval Maldives. This commuting of sentence has only come about because of international pressure. They need to take the next step and ditch these draconian, ridiculous laws altogether. Then they might be worthy of the 21st century.

  8. The typical claims by Muslim fundamentalists that the values and way of life of liberal democracies are responsible for corrupting society are not only deluded and severely ignorant, they are a striking example of chronic psychological projection. They seem to be incapable of looking at themselves and seeing how immoral and harmful sharia law is, not only to women, but to society as a whole.

I feel sorry for this child who, on top of being a victim of rape and terrible injustice, can’t even find refuge with her parents. It is hardly an exaggeration to say that religious indoctrination is and/or leads to child abuse of the worst sort.
