Mandatory virginity inspections could be coming to Sumatra.

So…this is a thing.

A plan to make female high school students undergo mandatory virginity tests has been met with outrage from activists, who argue that it discriminates against women and violates their human rights.

Education chief Muhammad Rasyid, of Prabumulih district in south Sumatra put forward the idea, describing it as “an accurate way to protect children from prostitution and free sex”. He said he would use the city budget to begin tests early next year if MPs approved the proposal.

How does a virginity inspection protect high school students from prostitution?  Do they imagine that the only motivation a high school student might have for losing her virginity is prostitution?  That’s like prohibiting all food to protect people from unhealthy diets.

And since when is free sex something for which someone needs protection?  You generally need protection from things that hurt you, not from things that are fun.  This is why we protect people from murder, but not from watching Dr. Who.  So protection from STIs and such?  Hell yes!  But protection from sex?  That’s not protection, it’s intrusion.

“This is for their own good,” Rasyid said. “Every woman has the right to virginity … we expect students not to commit negative acts.”

A woman’s right to virginity would only be under assault if the state were forcing them to have sex, which isn’t happening.  Women also have a right to personal autonomy, which is violated when the state is insisting that they shouldn’t have sex if they choose to do so.  And if you think an invasive test to make sure a woman’s hymen is intact is less of a violation than consensual sex, it might be hard for people to buy the idea that you’re in it to protect these women.

What could cause that kind of perversion of compassion?

The plan has met with some support from local politicians, who said the test would help cut down on “rampant” promiscuity in the district.

“Virginity is sacred, thus it’s a disgrace for a [female] student to lose her virginity before getting married,” Hasrul Azwar of the Islamist Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) told the Jakarta Post.

Oh yeah.  It is no surprise that where you find a cult-like and totalitarian obsession with virginity, you can count on finding religion just around the corner.  And lest you think this is an isolated incident, it’s not:

It is the third plan of its kind in Muslim-majority Indonesia, where similar drafts were proposed in West Java in 2007, and again in Sumatra in 2010, but dropped after a public outcry.

And the arguments in opposition are strange:

“There are female students who may have lost their virginity due to an accident − it is not their fault,” South Sumatra legislative council deputy speaker HA Djauhari told local media.

How does one lost their virginity by accident? It seems to me you could lose it intentionally or by having it forced on you (speaking of protecting people from harm). But accidentally? Does anybody ever go to the store for eggs and wind up having sex by mistake?

I suspect what they meant was that the hymen could be broken for any number of reasons that have nothing to do with sex, which is true. But so what? Why are those reasons better? Who thinks “Oh good! She broke her hymen in a painful accident and not while at least getting some pleasure out of it! Thank goodness!”?

The National Commission for Child Protection also denounced the plan as an attempt to curry “popularity” among religious conservatives, and called the move “excessive”.

Politicians casting liberty to the wolves in order to gain favor with people who almost certainly believe religion is the key to compassion and morality? Now I’ve heard everything.

*sigh* There are so many propositions so offensive to the notion of fairness, so dismissive of human well-being, that would be rejected out of hand if not for the presence of religion.

In reply to QuestioningKat, post 2. Let me try to offer a counterweight by pointing out an alternative way of life…the Pirahu of the Amazon. ‘Chastity is not a cultural value’ (Wikipedia) and, unsurprisingly, therefore, they do not follow any religious beliefs. They are mentioned on another thr…

I’m not in favor of casually tossing away sex either. Emotionally healthy adults who take responsibility for their body and well being generally do not act in the opposite extreme. (I did not read the article that you mentioned.)

I find it bothersome that people would inspect another’s genitals. This act seems sexual or power driven in nature.

Just as Indonesia was finally becoming standardized in the Islam apologist community as the go to example to trot out as to where Islam is all sweetness and light, now this.

Seriously ? Have you heard of the Bali Bombers – who were smiling Indonesians that blew up innocent Australian tourists that support their country with constant tourism ???

  2. This is a bloody outrage. One’s genitals are one’s own damned business.

These misogynists should get over themselves and what THEY want.Use the city budget to make life better for the citizens.

And what about the male students? One would think that the women are raving nymphomaniacs while the men, pure as the driven snow, are pursued and forced into sex by these hussies. Really,it’s too much!!

  3. ‘The plan has met with some support from local politicians, who said the test would help cut down on “rampant” promiscuity in the district.’

Erm – rampant Islamic males…you mean !! castration should work equally well -

Leave the women alone – this is so de humanising…its a sickening human rights abuse !

  4. Islam really does give the pious absolutely outrageous ideas and gives them the notion that they can do what ever they like because they think know what allah wants. Islam is the skid mark in the underpants of humanity.

  5. If this plan pretends to “protect” women, what about if some women don’t want to be “protected” and refuse to be “inspected”? What will happen to an “inspected” woman if she isn’t a virgin? will she be stoned to death to extend the “protection” to her “afterlife”? Perhaps these people think that paradise is running out of virgins to satisfy the sexual needs of the huge amount of jihadists fallen in combat. Stupidity goes on and on.

  6. Bit confused here, how are they going to check the virginity of men? I mean if virginity is sacred and all that. I’d hate to think of some female inadvertently marrying a man who had lost his before pledging his troth to her.

Or is it religious sexism that is sacred rather than virginity and I’m missing the point?

Oh and whilst we’re here will anyone be checking the girls whose virginity may have been lost earlier than they’d like. Say via rape or forced marriage? Or is it just consensual, fun loss of viginity that is the issue here? Cos consensual fun loss of virginity isn’t really any of their business, but rape and forced marriages should be!

You may well be right here Odalrich. However I’m sure I’ve said it before but I think that was a mistranslation somewhere along the long line from Mohammeds blessed hallucinations and the later koran. It is in fact grapes not virgins. Something the jihadists and virginity lovers may have missed in their calculations.

Well, those people are so sexually frustrated that it wouldn’t be a surprise if they see sex where there is only fruit. Was the translation grapes or figs?

  8. This is disgusting but here in the UK we have form. Some suffragettes were subjected to forced genital examinations ostensibly to see if they had venereal disease but actually as part of a government intimidation policy.
The perverted bastards need watching all the time, everywhere.

  9. I would be in trouble if I was being inspected.

In my childhood I could have lost my hymen in anyone of the following ways. My big sisters rocking horse , anyone of my friends and families bed’s footboard , My Fair Lady Schwinn Bike with a banana seat trying to escape Cocoa a dog that would not leave me the Hell alone , farm equipment while visiting relatives in Iowa USA , playing doctor with others and fondling myself.

If none of these would have done me in I know that I lost my bloody hymen on a rusty tractor left in the middle of a playground that was in the Waterville Campground in Minnesota USA when I was 8yrs old. After falling on it I hurt my crotch and seen blood everywhere. I went to my parents. I got cleaned up. A gauze bandage would not stay put so they had to use feminine products on me for the first time to sop up all that blood.

If I was inspected by the HYMEN POLICE then FAILURE be thy name. And I was still a virgin till I was 12,
