Jenny McCarthy and the selling of e-cigarettes | Respectful Insolence | ScienceBlogs

I’ve made no secret of my opinion of Jenny McCarthy. To put it mildly, I don’t think that much of her, particularly her flaming stupid when it comes to her promotion of dangerous antivaccine nonsense. To her, vaccines are chock full of “toxins” and all sorts of evil humors that will turn your child autistic in a heartbeat if you let those horrible pediatricians inject them “directly into the bloodstream” and in general “steal” your “real” child away from you the way she thinks vaccines “stole” her son Evan away from her. Indeed, among other “achievements,” she’s written multiple books about autism in which vaccines feature prominently as a cause, led a march on Washington to “green our vaccines” and has been the president of the antivaccine group Generation Rescue for the last few years. None of this stopped ABC from foolishly hiring her to join the regular cast on The View beginning in a few short weeks.

Because I occasionally check on what Jenny McCarthy is up to, I noticed a couple of weeks ago that she had been hired to be a celebrity spokesperson for blu™ e-cigarettes. Curious, I checked out this video of her hawking the blu™ Starter Pack:

Particularly odd to me is how the ad has Jenny McCarthy hawking blu™ e-cigarettes as a “sexy” way to smoke. She points out dramatically that, now that she is single, being a smoker is a big problem because, apparently, smoking itself is a big turnoff to a lot of men and she hates interrupting dates to have to go outside to catch a smoke. If you believe the commercial, blu™ e-cigarettes have completely revitalized Jenny McCarthy’s love life, apparently in the wake of her breakup with Jim Carrey a couple of years ago. Like Matt Carey, I also could not escape the irony of the woman who rails against “toxins” in vaccines and described her struggles trying to stop smoking when she was pregnant now shilling for a device designed to be used to inhale a toxic substance (nicotine) into one’s lungs. On the other hand, she has in the past raved about how she absolutely “loves” Botox; so maybe it’s not so difficult to understand.

Are these just vaporizers? DO they work with cannabis? Just curious…
You can purchase THC eJuice for these where it is legal. They are work by heating a food grade oil kind of like a vaporizer does. You can also purchase the eJuice’s with or without Nicotine.

I got myself one of these newfangled vaping kit. TBH, I don’t see why it couldn’t (except that, it’s illegal).

I categorize Jenny McCarthy as a social parasite, aka ‘socialite’. She contributes to nothing of value whatsoever (not any more anyways), best to just ignore her self-promoting antics entirely.

      Now there’s a sad irony.

No they wouldn’t. The cartridge containing the nicotine is propitiatory, essentially a locked, enclosed accessory. The e cig works by vaporising the contents of this cartridge as a person inhales.

Some cartomisers (cartridges with atomisers) are unsealed and can be refilled. There are also cartridges with replaceable atomisers that are even more cost effective. An atomiser is a thin coil of wire wrapped around a wick which absorbs the e-liquid. The battery heats up the coil to vaporise the e-liquid turning into vapour. When the wick tastes burnt after prolonged use, the atomiser can be replaced for a new one. E-liquids of various flavours come in different nicotine strengths. Liquids said to contain “low” doses of nicotine tend to correspond to a nicotine concentration of 6–8 mg/ml (milligrams of nicotine per millilitre of liquid).
“Midrange” or “medium” doses tend to correspond to a nicotine concentration of 10–14 mg/ml.
“High” doses tend to correspond to a nicotine concentration of 16–18 mg/ml.
“Extra-high” doses tend to correspond to a nicotine concentration of 24–36 mg/ml.
E-liquids can also come in ‘zero nicotine’ flavours.

  1. They rule. Certain brands, I prefer to real cigarettes.

Yes, they are simply vaporizers. The nicotine is suspended in either polyglycol, vegetable glycerine, or a blend. Vegetable is better. You cant use them to smoke pot, but there are devices just for that. It is a battery that attaches to a vaporizer. The vaporizer unit is calibrated to a particular substance, but the battery is just a battery and can fuel any vaporizing unit. I didn’t even desire to quit smoking, but a good vaporizer provides more satisfaction, and costs about 10cents a day, verses $6 for traditional tobacco.

The opposition are corporate shills for tobacco companies, Luddites, and incurious people who wish to impose their standards and cultural norms on others. Nicotine is not “toxic”, anymore than caffeine. It is a wonderful drug, and beneficial to many people. It even has medicinal properties and is known to enhance short-term memory. Why must enthusiasts of nicotine be forced to inhale the true toxins in cigarettes? It smacks of the Judeo-Xian sentiment that people must suffer for enjoying themselves. We can have sex for pleasure without negative consequences, and can smoke without social or health problems. It’s okay, really.

You just made this statement up. A quick Google search finds that, conservatively, the fatal dose of caffeine for a 70-kg person is about 10.5 grams, whereas for nicotine it is about 50 milligrams. That makes nicotine about 200 times more lethal than caffeine.

Yeah! Back before people bothered about health and safety, nicotine was widely used as a pesticide! – and still is in some circumstances!

  2. From the article: “One notes from Jenny McCarthy’s commercial that in the case of blu™ e-cigarettes this light is blue, for reasons that escape me.”

I’m not surprised, and I’m glad they declare their ignorance but as a qualification? It’s a matter of personal taste and culture. It’s cool. It’s an aesthetic, an affectation, and foolish to mock. Blue LEDs are floss. For so long, their manufacture was prohibitively expensive. Once released, they were immediately used to adorn high-end electronics to indicate how contemporary they were, and platform stripper-shoes…which is it’s own subject deserving of Smithsonian funding. Speaking of strippers, I should point out that lucite shoes have not been tested for potential long-term harms and are categorized as G.R.A.S.. The sky is falling. Where’s my e-brella?

  3. We seem to be searching for logic from a person who has never allowed logic to interfere with her conclusions about a given data set. She rides hunches and claims that this represents “knowledge”.

Stop it, Jenny, some day you will not be “pretty” and then, you will be expected to speak and represent products with integrity and perhaps even a citation or two…. you have chosen to engage the argument about vaccination, now, you vacillate? Typical of an empty headed dumb ass eager to somehow stay relevant. She is currently running away from a contractual commitment to some type of “lingerie basketball” tv special… Seemed like a good thing at the time (when she cashed the check….)

  4. I’m no Jenny McCarthy fan – but I used e-cigs to quit smoking and it absolutely worked for me. Haven’t had a cigarette since May. Haven’t even had a puff of the e-Cig since the end of July. It isn’t risk – free – it still contains nicotine – but no tar or a whole lot of other bad stuff, no stinky hands and face, no stinky clothes, no stained teeth – I think they’re a great invention. Yes – they are indeed vaporizers.

  5. sorry but i’d never heard of this woman before today, and so this may be deemed a little off topic but has nobody in the media asked her if perhaps its the toxins she put into herself whilst pregnant that caused the problems with her son rather than the vaccines given to protect him.i sense that this is a a case of deflecting the blame to ease her conscience.

  6. She’s a nutter on most topics.

But she is not promoting smoking here – it is an aid to giving up smoking. Or possibly a far healthier alternative to smoking tobacco. (Nicotine is not the killer in tobacco, although it is the addictive component. The killer is tar, made up of about 10,000 horrible chemicals).

  7. This women had a child that was ill or perhaps that died. It made her nuts. She had to find someone to blame. That is very American. If anything goes wrong, you should sue somebody who misbehaved to bring this misfortune.

The emotion also blinded her to the understandings of medicine and science.

Maybe on some level she understands how she is behaving evily. So she might as well hang for a sheep as a lamb by tricking people into smoking. Maybe she is just a psychopath who wants money, and does not care about the effect on others. Perhaps she is just seeking notoriety, and will say or do- any crazy thing to get it.

  8. Are these things sold as cigarette replacements or stop-smoking aids? If the second, I take it there are no government taxes.

You would not get the tars, and the nicotine would be precisely dosed. How much safer are they? Nicotine constricts blood vessels which I gather would be the same.

There is an oil spray called PAM that kids like to sniff. I believe it can be fatal because of oil in the lungs. Is there a problem with oil in the e-cigarette getting into the lungs?

There have been a few times in my life when I accidentally ingested nicotine. I thought I was going to die I felt so awful. It is so odd that someone aclimatised has no such reaction, quite the opposite.

  9. The big deal here is that the product she is endorsing has the same exact chemical in it that she claims contributes to causing autism in vaccines (propylene glycol). This is why she is a douche in my book.

Oh, and nicotine is very toxic and it’s addictive properties have been repeatedly demonstrated. One study using mice showed that it is second to heroin in “addiction strength”.

  10. I recently bought the e-cig , as a way of cutting down on toxins. I know it is new , but surely it’s got to be better than smoke. Time will only tell I suppose. Biggest issue at the moment , is its largely unregulated , in terms of what exactly is in the vapour. But if it proves a healthier way to get a fix of nicotine then I think, this can only be good. Am I missing something?

  11. Jenny is an idiot, but e-cigarettes are almost certainly better for your health than regular cigarettes. The nicotine is addictive, but that is not what gives you cancer – it’s all the normal smoke from burning vegetable matter being pulled into your longs that causes cancer. e-ciggs give the addict their nicotine without the smoke.

I see that she is back to selling side-boob.

Yes, because she knows that men prefer a hot chick over an intelligent plain Jane any day. “Rational” men can bash her views all day, but in the end…
