  1. That is great. ‘Sound sciency’ is terrific advice for new agey gurus. Of course, not that many have got enough of the jargon to do that. Deepak Chopra has, but the common run of guru has to rely on ignorance–their own and that of their followers.

  2. I’m convinced. I want to give these guys my wife and all my possessions, go live in a fortress-temple somewhere in the Nevada desert to worship them until the time comes to shoot up the nearest town and commit suicide. Where do I sign?

  3. The problem with sounding ‘sciency’ is that real scientists don’t sound like that.

“Although natural selection can act only through and for the good of each being, yet characters and structures, which we are apt to consider as of very trifling importance, may thus be acted on. When we see leaf-eating insects green, and bark-feeders mottled-grey; the alpine ptarmigan white in winter, the red-grouse the colour of heather, and the black-grouse that of peaty earth, we must believe that these tints are of service to these birds and insects in preserving them from danger. ” (Darwin)

“We envisage a rigid sphere of radius R, at rest relatively to the moving
system k, and with its centre at the origin of co-ordinates of k. The equation of
the surface of this sphere moving relatively to the system K with velocity v is…”
    (Einstein)

It’s not hard to tell the difference, except that most people have never been exposed to
significant amounts of real science. What you will notice is that the words are not at all hard to understand
    for a reasonably intelligent person.

When Chopra can explain his ideas in simple, plain, English and show me the maths and the
measurements I might consider his ideas, for a second, before discarding them as false. Without that
they can be discarded as false without any consideration.

That’s why it’s called ‘sciency’ and not ‘scientific’. And it’s only sounding sort of scientific not actually talking scientifically. But for the gullible and clueless, Deepak Chopra’s ‘word salads’ are taken to be a display of scientific knowledge. I agree with bigJ. He’s the master.

  4. Sorry good try. I speak New Age so I understand what people like Chopra are saying. It’s not that I disagree that he is saying BS, but his topics can be comprehended. This video preaches to this choir. :) If someone wants to appeal to a wider audience, I’d suggest my course below. I guarantee something below will strike a chord with someone.

If I were to offer a course on getting your guru going, it would look like this:

    1. Reassure people that they themselves are gurus and experts in life. They have just forgotten this simple fact of their reality. For the time being, they can come to you, a seasoned guru, and give “love offerings” in the form of cash, check, credit card, free services… Most people will continue going to workshops and events for ages and never realize/accept that a good work ethic might be what’s really missing.

    2. Reassure people that everything they need – money, resources, access to talent, healing, can be easily obtained by their “inner God” attracting what they need. No problem. If you’re struggling, then something is off in your Consciousness.

    3. Reassure people that they are the ultimate authority in every aspect of their life. Get a fatal diagnosis? You created it and if you only change your level of Consciousness (mindset), you could fix it. Never mind the medical authorities, they are overlooking the reality that you are God and all things are possible.

    4. Reassure people that everything is in their control. All good and bad occurs because they attracted it.

    5. Focus only on the positive and never the negative. Any problems going on? Ignore it like an elephant in the room.

    6. Recognize that people who do not agree with you and people with any type of problems in life (health, job, relationships, discrimination…) are operating on a lower level of Consciousness. They too can achieve the spiritual heights that you have, if they are willing to release the needs of the ego. Perhaps in this life or the next life it will happen. You simply need to recognize that this is the stage they are on in their soul’s journey – your just further along. Don’t proselytize to them, but remind them (bully them) that their thoughts are not in alignment with all that is good.

Yeah, I remember hearing lots of this crap when I was back in the states (and still see on Facebook). It’s a form of psychological Darwinism. If you’re suffering, or losing out in life’s competition, it’s your fault. You are spiritually inferior, mal-adapted, inadequate. Every trashy self-help book essentially says the same thing; you have power over your future, which to some extent is true, but claiming that everyone, even the sick and lame, the abused and oppressed, simply have to improve their mindset to get better, is deeply repugnant.

I see you are an adept of THE LAW OF ATTRACTION. This is not as sciency as Deepak Chopra and can be preached by those who only have a few words of science, like ‘scientific law’, ‘quantum entanglements’ and the like. Skeptical Inquirer has an article that sums up the ‘new thought’ movement rather well.

OK fair enough. New Thought bridges what Chopra preaches (more of his older stuff) so I need to add a few – Ultimate possiblities within the realm of Consciousness. Chopra’s views became more sciencey after the movie What the Bleep and Down the Rabbit hole. (I used to belong to a New Thought Church and recall when all the talk turned “Quantum.”) I’ll see if I can gather up a few after work.

Also, the link to the Secret, Law of Attraction is only part of New Thought and barely sums it up.

Sums it all up perfectly; bullshit personified, especially the quotes from Deepak Chopra! Not sure if they’re verbatim, but that doesn’t make the slightest bit difference.

Yep. Shermer’s ‘Baloney Detection Kit’ in concentrated form + Brian Dalton = one heck of a gem!

Deepak Chopra is a permanent feature on Oprah.com – with $$$ backing, he’s a juggernaut. E.g., a local news anchorwoman gushed whilst “interviewing” Chopra. Either she’s a true woo-fan, or, the network was paid to have her act the fool?

  5. So, thanks again for joining us and don’t forget: The infinite potential of your nine dimensional soul already comprehends the mechanics of external reality. If you can internalise that, you’re home free.

    LMFAO!
