  1. … and in australia, the arsehole award goes to tony abbott for denying women a position in his cabinet not having a minister of science; and making a distinction between promises we thought he made, and actual promises … and the list goes on to include that strange GW Bush-like way he walks; over turning a local territory’s same sex marriage act; and for being the suppository of knowledge

  2. ” 2. Judge Jean Boyd, for giving a drunk driver probation instead of prison after his attorneys said he had “affluenza” (growing up rich and spoiled) “

After a cursory examination of the list, noting most of the list did not manifest well in the real world (1. Sarah Palin, for saying African Americans can’t comprehend her definition of slavery ), I chose 2 as the most asshole-ish. By many orders of magnitude.

PS: Put ” affluenza ” into the site dictionary. It probably retched a little as I did when reading the full story of that rich bastard getting off so easily.

Hello! My first post :) I’m quite sure that list is missing top Catholic bishop in Poland for blaming children and divorces for paedophilia ?
[Paedophilia is caused by divorce, says Poland's top Catholic bishop as he blames parents for not bringing up children properly]

More sound parenting advice from chief sexless arsehole in drag.

  3. While not approving of ANY of the nominees, I note that there’s a distinct shortage or murderers, kidnappers, rapists, wife-beaters, bankers etc., on this list! Were Adolf Hitler alive today, he’s probably not get on it. This list could start with the leaders of the world’s most awful states.

  4. Looking at the list, it seems as though all the nominees are from the USA. I wonder why? To answer my own question though, two points are raised:
Since there are only citizens of the USA nominated, it seems as though the education system in the USA has utterly failed evidenced by the egocentricity of the site owners. It doesn’t even take the rest of the english speaking world into account. The world revolves around the USA and the rest of the world doesn’t exist. Very narrow minded and jingoistic. I’m sure there are just as many, if not more, and bigger assholes scattered though out the world that are more deserving and need to be called on it.
Secondly, such deep navel gazing by the site owners focusing on their own miscreants and publishing their misdeeds just might bring about much need change in attitude by the nominees, but I’m not holding my breath.. jcw

I agree, the site owner, Richard Dawkins is clearly a product of the awful US education system.

That was sarcasm in case anyone reading is suffering an irony deficiency. I think the reason most of the assholes are Americans is just a sad reality that our culture for the last few decades has essentially encouraged people to be assholes in a lot of ways. Many in the US equate monetary success with morality.

      • LOL! I was referring to the site owners of the “Assholes of the Year” website, not this one!

The point I was really trying to make is that there are far worse candidates elsewhere than many of the the nominees on the list. Looks my attempt at sarcasm failed miserably… jcw

  5. I sometimes feel I should just stop watching the news. You just realize how many hypocritical stupid ignorant idiots there is out there. I just read an article about a researcher exposing how countless think tanks are in secret funded by conservative rich people to spread misinformation and lies about global warming and anthropogenic climate change. I try not to become cynical but it’s really hard. The last decade or so, I have seen a clear trend of economic inequality and crony capitalism taking over the world. There is this war against science and the consequences of all this seems to be nothing short of a global disaster. Most people in the western world are too busy watching reality television or enjoying their junk food. It seems like very few care that modern civilization as we know it is threatened. I don’t know if they truly are delusional or just don’t want to see the truth. All attempts to make a change seems to be met with either complete nonchalance or at times, even worse, with hostility. People like Snowden are considered criminals by many. The Wall Street bankers who robbed the American people of billions get rewarded while some poor individual is sent to jail for many years for some non-violent drug crime. It feels like we are heading for the worst dystopia ever portrayed in fiction. It’s just so overwhelming. As said, I try hard not to become cynical and to hope that there is a possibility for change. But, it’s getting harder and harder. The rich seem to become richer and richer while more and more people are struggling to make ends meat. The middle class seem ignorant and very nonchalant of this fact. Every now and then the rich throw a few left-overs to the middle class in order to shut them up.

Our current situation reminds me of Martin Niemöller’s famous poem:

First they came for the Communists,
    and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a Communist.

Then they came for the Socialists,
    and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a Socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
    and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a trade unionist.

    Then they came for me,
and there was no one left to speak for me.
