Uganda punishes ‘aggravated homosexuality’ with life sentence

18

Ugandan lawmakers on Friday passed an anti-gay law that punishes "aggravated homosexuality" with life imprisonment.

The bill drew wide condemnation when it was first introduced in 2010 and included the death penalty, but that was removed from the revised version passed by parliament.

Although a provision for the death penalty was removed from the original bill, the law passed Friday sets life imprisonment as the maximum penalty for the new offence of "aggravated homosexuality," according to the office of a spokeswoman for Uganda's parliament.

The bill was introduced to parliament by a lawmaker who argued the law was needed to deter Western homosexuals he accused of "recruiting" Ugandan children.

Homosexuality was already illegal in Uganda under a colonial-era law that criminalized sexual acts "against the order of nature," but the Ugandan lawmaker who wrote the new law argued that tough new legislation was needed because homosexuals from the West threatened to destroy Ugandan families and were allegedly "recruiting" Ugandan children into gay lifestyles.

  1. What a delightful Christmas present, courtesy of the American evangelical Scott Lively’s untiring work no less!

So where do we go from here? I think the best way to sow seeds of doubt in the minds of pious Africans is to ask them bluntly why they think their devout nations experience the worst droughts, diseases, and political strife while most pro-gay secular nations enjoy the highest human happiness ratings.[1] Is it not always the religious right that views such misery as a gesture of God’s wrath?

Those to whom I have posed this challenge have either responded with bitter ad hominem attacks or obfuscation, so let’s rub the point in further.

Great thought! I’m always in favour of using supernatural reasoning against itself. Perhaps those professing to know the mind of god have come to the wrong conclusions. One could continue that god must be on the side of the Scandinavians as all indications point to the fact that secular countries enjoy a high standard of living, low rate of violent crime and long life.

  2. “Aggravated Homosexuality”?

Is that like “Aggravated Blondness” or “Aggravated Tallness”?

If someone is gay, it is part of who they are and what they are. Just like hair colour or height.

And just as it would be ridiculous to lock up and torture someone for being over 6 foot tall, the same is true for homosexuals.

    End of story.

People are tall. People are gay. Get over it.

That is why I find the I was born this way parades a bit silly. They use to have blond hair blue eye parades back in the 30s and 40s

  3. I suggest we contact the local Ugandan embassy and mention that due to this article, we will be pressuring our local country government officials to cut off all foreign aid to Uganda.

  4. “Ugandan political and religious leaders had come under the influence of American evangelicals who wanted to spread their anti-gay campaign in Africa. Ugandan gays singled out Scott Lively, a Massachusetts evangelical”

So this evil fucker can meet his maker secure in the knowledge that he has probably sent more than a few people down for life in a third world prison system where they will lack adequate food, sanitation or medical care and will die young, for the crime of Being Human.

I’m sure his god will reward him accordingly.

I’m also pretty sure he’s a closet homosexual himself, judging by the garbage in his books – he clearly has some personal issues with it…

Anyone who can come out (if you pardon the pun) with the line “homosexuals are the true inventors of Nazism and the guiding force behind many Nazi atrocities.” (in his book, The Pink Swastika), shouldn’t be allowed out of the mental home without an escort…

To be honest, I didn’t realise how screwed-up this cretin was until I looked at his other book titles…

Can he provide any evidence of that? I sincerely doubt it. Oh wait, he’s an evangelical Christian , so no evidence is required.

That’s something I really can’t get my head around… How and why would anyone ‘recruit’ children into homosexuality?

This is another example of Christians only seeing the world through their own twisted, evil eyes – because their own method of recruiting young people (through intimidation, fear-mongering, indoctrination and brainwashing) is all they know, they assume that everyone else in the world acts in the same insidious way.

  6. This should be a wake up call for the rest of the world. Developed nations are forging ahead with egalitarian laws while the rest are left behind.

India is now finding itself alongside Uganda and Russia, moving ever closer to fundamentalism and intolerance. So much for non-violence, civil disobedience, live and let live principles. It is imperative that a multiethnic, polyglot and pluralistic society like India change its course. If not, horrors of genocide and oppression are right around the corner. 20th century witnessed horrors of the partition, and looking at our current trajectory, 21st century could turn out to be worse.

Tolerance and civil liberties are important more than ever. In spite of all the economic growth, we have seen the erosion of those core values.

  7. Don’t forget that mega-pastor Rick Warren had a big hand in this as well. He was one of the American evangelicals that got this law started. The purpose of his “purpose driven life” seems to be spreading even more suffering onto people who are already oppressed.

  8. If people in Uganda were being imprisoned due skin colour or religion western governments would be intervening, and condemning the action. When Apartheid was happening in South Africa Governments were desperate to be from the country shouting the loudest about the injustice and wanted to show they would not have ties with a nation that oppressed citizens based on race. Where are they now? Where are they when a desperate, oppressed and bullied section of society need help? Is the plight of gay people not trendy enough or are they misguided enough to think that it’s ok to ruin lives in the name of religion?

  9. Turns out it’s not just Scott Lively evangelising gay hate and rabble rousing in Uganda.

Ed Silvoso’s charismatic Harvest Transformation Ministries has been at the forefront of the Kill the Gays Bill too.

In addition to scapegoating gay people they claim to have cured AIDS by promoting abstinance and actively persue their mission to install a global theocracy

Well worth a look. It explains a lot of what’s happening in Uganda now.
