Access Ministries under scrutiny after ‘inappropriate and offensive’ material given out at Victorian primary school

30

Victoria’s Education Department has launched an investigation into what it calls “inappropriate and offensive” religious material distributed at a primary school.

The ABC understands religious educators handed out material at Torquay College last year that instructed children to seek counselling if they had homosexual feelings.

The material also claims that girls who wear revealing clothes are inviting sexual assault and that masturbation and sex before marriage are sinful.

The so-called Biblezines were given as graduation gifts as part of a program run by the state’s Christian education provider Access Ministries.

Naja Voorhoeve, whose seven-year-old child received the material from an older student, says special religious instruction (SRI) providers should be banned from public schools.

“If the SRI providers were prepared to breach our trust in this matter, you have absolutely no idea about the other things that they’re doing, about instances in other schools where this material might have been handed out,” she said.

“My personal position is that SRI volunteers should not be allowed in schools because their programs cannot be adequately monitored.

“What they do is not part of the curriculum… so they’re basically let in on their own.”

I thought it was quite descriptive of the rantings of the faith-deluded seeking new addicts!

      ANTIPSYCHOTICS

These drugs treat schizophrenia, mood disorders, psychosis associated with neuro problems & temporal lobe epilepsy **and other psychotic disorders. Many Generics end in “zine” **

CHLORPROMAZINE (Thorazine), TRIFLUOPERZINE (Stelazine), THOIRIDAZINE (mellaril) and PERPHENAZINE (trilafon). These drugs are “Phenothiazines”.

Perhaps they are confusing the disease with a cure in the usual backwards thinking!

  2. Access Ministries have been trying to insinuate themselves into school via the Howard Government’s Chaplaincy Program. Now it seems they are also trying to take over religious education. Worth noting that this is a state school not a private religious school. We have lots of the latter.

“Biblezine”. Isn’t it embarrassing when the old straight folk try to be cool dudes. LOL. (that’s me making the same mistake !)

  3. Congratulations on the Victorian (that’s in Australia by the way) , education department getting stuck into these evil cretins , but why are they allowed anywhere kids at all ? what sort of information IS “appropriate” from anyone peddling myth and dogma ? Somehow we all sit back and let the god squad invade our lives without realising it , for example , take the bible you’ll find in every hotel / motel room in Australia (and probably the all around the world) . I find it so offensive that this book and all the pain & hate & ignorance that is attached to it is left for me in a room I have paid to stay in …. I ALWAYS throw it in the rubbish bin , you should try it , it feels so good .

    • I occasionally write a note inside the front cover of the bible in my room saying something like, “Caution, this book can be hazardous to your mental health.” This makes me grin and feel good about letting others know how I feel. I do what we can, but more and more we non believers are growing in number.

A United Church minister I know shared with me that several of her colleagues had lost their faith. She said, “And probably more than you think, around 70%!” They continue because they need to get to their retirement, and also feel that their congregations truly benefit from the ceremony of the services. Quite revealing. In reply to #8 by ipsos:

Nail hit firmly on the head. These liars cannot be trusted to do the right thing in the grown up world so why the hell are they allowed access to children’s minds? Get em out and keep em out.

To be honest I agree. They will need counselling because the torment they will get from bigoted religious nut cases and other homophobes when they come out will likely be quite damaging. But that counselling should not be aimed at some kind of ‘cure’ but instead how to appropriately handle the abuse they will possibly receive.

The material also claims that girls who wear revealing clothes are inviting sexual assault and that masturbation and sex before marriage are sinful.

Have these people nothing better to worry about other than sex. They are obsessed with it. Being honest I do also believe wearing revealing clothing can lead a woman (or girl) into an awkward situation, but that is not to say that it is a situation of their making or their fault. Perhaps if the perpetrators were allowed to masturbate they would not feel the need to assault women (and girls).

Call me Victorian if you like, but getting pregnant outside of a stable relationship is not ideal. Abstinence is one way to avoid such an unwanted pregnancy but the alternatives, such as condoms, are very effective. What young people need is good sex education, not just to be told ‘hands off until you are married’.

Finally, and light heartedly, our nine year old daughter asked us where babies come from. We told her that they come out of the Mummy’s tummy. “OK” she said “but how does the baby get into the tummy?”. We explained that it needed a man and a woman and that when she was older we would explain fully. Without a pause she asked “Has it got something to do with your private bits?”. We suddenly realised that nine is not all that young any more.

  6. The material, produced by the News Corp-owned Nelson Bibles, America’s largest Christian publishing house, also “exposes the lie of safe sex”, claiming that condoms condone promiscuity, and urges those who think they are gay never to act on it.

In response to an agony aunt-style question about, “How far can you go before you are no longer pure?”, the document reads: “Let’s put it this way: How much dog poop stirred into your cookie batter does it take to ruin the whole batter.”

      Oh! The irony!!

“Let’s put it this way: How much doG poop stirred into your EDUCATION does it take to ruin the whole outlook on life.”

  7. The fact that there is a State Christian Education Provider is a indictment on the government.
State sponsored fairytale indoctrination; they’d be better off with Disney. At least there’s no real violence and always a happy ending.

  8. My daughter was in Grade 1, many years ago in Norseman District High School. We had no idea that religious instruction was going on in her class, even though I was a teacher in the high school section. I don’t know if it was done by this crowd, but they seem to be from the same mould. She is in her mid thirties now, and only told me a couple of years ago, and she can still shudder at the indoctrination and guilt loaded on her at the age of five.

  9. What a perverted view of humanity some of these Christians have. They are lying to school kids about masturbation being a sin when it’s actually good for you. As to having sex before marriage being sinful, I would say it’s a “sin” not to have sex with your prospective partner before you get married . Do they really rely on “It’ll be alright on the night”? Many unhappy marriages have been caused by that fallacious view.

  10. More good reasons to ban religious education from elementary schools altogether. After a few millennia of gross abuse and crimes against humanity, it should be plain to all that religion is bad for you (and TO you). But I guess some people don’t get it and they never will.

  11. masturbation and sex before marriage is sinful

Freaks. I’m sure y’all just primly sit in parlors sipping tea, lest you sin against big J. Crush, kill, destroy any and all natural feelings and desires. Oh, and behind closed doors, hypocrites, too. Freaks.

Lots of sexual frustration and pent-up anger to direct into energetic preaching! Acquiring converts helps to suppress doubts and relief the frustration.

  12. It is disgraceful that religious instruction is allowed in public schools. I am a high school teacher and have occasionally been in a room next the SRI classes. The lies and misinformation that is peddled to students by the religious is criminal. These people tell students they are sinners, that their parents are sinners, they mock science, they preach intelligent design and that’s just a few examples I have overheard. It really is unbelievable, particularly when you consider the checks and balances that teachers have to go through before they can enter a classroom. These people can tell students any rubbish they like.

From where do these wankers get their idea that masturbation is sinful? There is no place in the Bible where God forbids or denounces masturbation.

      Right you are!

However, given the longstanding tradition of conflating onanism (whatever precisely one might mean by that) with masturbation in Christianity, it may pay to pre-empt reference to Genesis 38:6-10 by referring readers to this page of The Straight Dope on the sin of Onan. As Cecil Adams points out there, Onan offended God by refusing to provide his deceased brother with an heir by marrying and impregnating his widow. This has everything to do with the very ancient levirate law and nothing to do with masturbation, but Mr Adams gives a good summary of how the cited passage, in the absence of any more appropriate biblical passage, has been misused by Christians over the centuries.

Another word for masturbation is onanism.

From the biblical name Onan: In the Book of Genesis, Onan, son of Judah, in fulfillment of the laws of levirate marriage was to impregnate his brother Er’s widow, Tamar, in order to raise offspring from the union in his brother’s name. In order to avoid raising descendants for his late brother, however, Onan spilled his semen on the ground when he went in to his brother’s wife, so that he would not give offspring to his brother. (Genesis 38:9). Thus the word Onanism was coined, meaning ejaculating outside the vagina, or masturbation (because this also spills semen, rather than using it for procreation).

Like his older brother, Er, Onan was killed by Yahweh. Onan’s death was retribution for being “evil in the sight of the Lord” through being unwilling to father a child by his widowed sister-in-law.[2]

Edit: Seems like Cairsley beat me to it.

      • Ah, I see, so they’re conflating the old ever reliable pull out method with the wholly dissimilar (with the exception of the resulting issue) activity known as masturbation. At least that’s how I read that passage. Good old Christian logic at its best!

As for your edit – ‘beat me to it’…pretty funny in this context!

  13. In reply to NUMBER 26 by Katy Cordeth. Another word for masturbation is onanism : Although Onan’s death was retribution for being “evil in the sight of the Lord,” this does not mean that he committed a sin. The biblical definition of sin is found in 1John 3:4, which reads : sin is the transgression of the law. The law was not given until the time of Moses. As St Paul puts it “I wouldn’t have known sin, except through the law (Romans 7:7). There is no place in Mosaic law that forbids masturbation, but Jesus does warn that any man coming while thinking about Miley Cyrus is guilty of committing adultery. See Matthew 5:28.

  14. The lord wants humanity to procreate yet he faults masturbation. Then he should have created humans with the best intentions….strong reproductive abilities….freedom from erection dysfunction….low sperm count….etc. I am just wondering for those who subscribe to IVF….did good old lord subscribe to SIN so that he may carry out his PROCREATION laws. If god is so good at what he does…..he doesn’t need man to come in with Science. Either he failed or he is simply incapable. The more Science progresses…the more it proves that god didn’t do a good job and we are pretty good without him since we are the ones patching up the flaws of his omnipotent claims. I always wondered if God has a penis. How then did he impregnate a virgin without penetration? He has to get his seed out from somewhere…somehow.
