avatarThe comment in the end "Don't waste it." is stupid, manipulative and judgmental.

It takes the whole delight out of free choice, free choice means not to care whether Brian Coughlan or anybody else thinks that you wasted anything.

It was also covered in the responsibility part, taking responsibility also means bringing actions in accort with some goals, (not aimlessly waste it).

Y. Bother, only if you or Brian proscribe what not wasting it must mean. Knowing Brian from his posts here and youtube, I would imagine he simply means to make the most of this one life and not waste time worrying about a non existent hell. How the individual defines not wasting it is up to them, not Brian, me or you. Except that both Brian and I would consider it a waste to worry about a non existent hell, irrespective of whatever else the individual would choose to do with their life.

Do we really have the power to be who we want to be? Can we really do what we want to do?

I'm referring to the comment "don't waste your life"

Would love to hear comments by anyone.

Yes:-) I especially like the term "Genocidal Stupidity".

Do we really have the power to be who we want to be? Can we really do what we want to do?

Within limited scope yes. Can you be an astronaut, or noble prize winning scientist? Well I don't know you so I can't say, but I'm pretty certain those goals would be beyond my grasp.

Can I be an engaged global citizen, discussing with fellow citizens around the world how we make things better? Well that I can do:-)

We each need to find our niche.

Simply, succinctly, clearly stated.

This is as good as it gets people!

Don't WASTE your life! Take care of yourself and take care of your planet and ALL that is on it.

If you need to ask "Why?" or if you seek the answer to "Why?", perhaps you should look in a mirror, and I mean REALLY look.

I like how the clip talks about Christianity and Islam, and then ropes in the Jews ("As your Rabbi") at the end.

Judaism does not believe in Hell. There is no "stick". Please don't rope in the Jews with its offspring religions.

If by not waisting your life you see your only choice to take from others, is that ok ?
I know it's more of a moral discussion and not one of religion but the two tie into each other i think. If i am to understand that this short life is all there is, and by no fault of my own i am born into a lower class where my choices/chances of making a good life for myself are limited.
Surely doing whatever is in my power - even if it means taking from others more fortunate to make sure my life 'is not wasted' is not unreasonable.

Pretty good video, I have seen a few others similar to this one. The issue of hell, I think, is quite obviously irrational when one uses common sense and their own logic, as explained in the video. I do believe the idea of hell was invented as a religious recruiting tool and an attempt to psychologically abuse its members into submission by way of terrorism. Obviously this idea is extremely effective, and why not? It certainly terrified me in the days when I assumed it to be true. I remember wishing passionately that there was no God, hell, or an afterlife at all because I was all but convinced hell is where I was headed no matter what I did. I find it interesting in my own experience that I was happily willing to forfeit any paradise or existence after death to be free of a possible hell. I think the reason why the concept of hell is so important to religion is because it is so effective. Heaven has always been a wonderful motivator to believe in God and join up with religion but the threat of hell clinched a significant percentage of otherwise non-believers and middle of the roaders.

cmac: Are you kidding us? Do you think you are really the original thinker of the ideas in this video? Did he actually take your exact quote from somewhere?

Yeah? And I bet he's laughing his evil laugh, stroking his white cat and raking in those YouTube millions...

God, can you believe it? Some people, always out to exploit everyone else for personal gain. Better 'slap him with a lawsuit', eh?

Perhaps we are not under the threat of a hell in a life after death, however, we are under the threat of a hell of misery in this life. There is no escape. We are all mental slaves to rational thought. Under the universal law of Causality we have no other system of thought, no system other than logic and reasoning. To stray lightly, results in being disconected from reality and to steer greatly from rational thought brings insanity.
Rational thought is very intricate in our thinking, one syllable follows another, in a word, one word rationally follows another and the same with a sentence and paragraph. In fact we cannot even know if we need rational thought or not, unless we use it. There may not be the threat of hell in the next life but on earth each human and humanity is under the threat. The battle of rational thought over irationality is not "and vs. or" debate but rather a total submission to the universal law of Causuality, to ignore it produces the hell we see here on earth of famine, genocide, war, raceism, intoleration, fanaticism, greed, distruction of the planet and even the misery of our own personal lives. Let us raise the sanctity of Reason for our Salvation. :)
