Video Don't eat at the Outback Steakhouse on Route 3...

Righteous Response, Colbert Report

Obscured by Clouds sent me this clip today:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gyEk0W_KFSY

A group called "Righteous Response" (surely a play on the Rational Response Squad) has posted a video where they show comments from the RichardDawkins.net forum and claim that these are endorsed by Richard Dawkins -- which they are obviously not. I think we all understand how forums work and who is responsible for the views in each post, so I won't belabor the point. Instead I would like to share this satirical video of Stephen Colbert hitting the nail on the head:

avatarYoou've got to be kidding . He just skipped over all the posts that were AGAINST the bible burnings, (I know, I was one of them) and just assumed RD was in favor of this. Knowing christians and their "fact finding" ways, they'll eat this right up and send these jackasses money to help fight their "spiritual battle".

I weep for humanity.

avatarShame on you, Richard, for creating an open forum, where some people can express views that others may disagree with! It would be better if everyone were muzzled, bound in a straight-jacket and force fed religious gobbledy-gook.

Excellent response from Colbert!

I, for one, am not planning on burning or recycling my bible; I need it as a reference to refute crazy christians with their own text. Though, I will steadfastly defend anyone's right to do so. Just as I staunchly defend anyone's right to burn a copy of the Iliad (though it would grieve me, as it is great literature).

Burning a church is an idiotic and psychopathic thing to do or even consider. I'm not saying this because bible-boy wants me to disassociate myself from people who suggest such things. I'm saying it because it is an idiotic and psychopathic thing to do or even consider. Besides, many of them are being made into snazzy condos these days.

Bible-boy, don't even make us show you what many of your christian buddies post on this site. Oh, they're not true christians, you say? Oh, well, that's funny. The posters you mentioned aren't 'true' atheists. Whatever that might mean.

I loved listening to him choke over the word 'Torah'. That was priceless.

 avatarRD is a moderate now?
Hell, i thought that idiots like this usually described him as a fundamentalist!!
Leader of the atheist movement?
And why do you have a right to worship anyway?
The point about banning the bible as it preaches religious hatred and a homophobia is a valid one.
Le's not forget that people like this are used to cherry-picking waht they want and are used to censorship.
Again, the comments (not opinions, just a simple comment whether meant in jest or not is irrelevant) of one or two people becomes the manifesto of the many - talk about blind...
And this folks, is what we are dealing with here.
And wasn't that song crap as well.

Wow, what a moron. Where to start...

Folks, this is what we're dealing with. They want to burn our bibles.

Noooo, they want to burn THEIR bibles, which is perfectly legal and there's nothing this guy or anyone else can do about it.

They want to burn our churches.

Either he's deliberately missing the sarcasm on purpose in the idea that burning churches would be considered less an atrocity than burning bibles, or this guy is really thick. I leave it as an exercise to the reader to figure out which.

This is clearly a battle we are in.

Indeed, this is a battle that we've been in for the last 2000 years. You poor, prosecuted Christians![/sarcasm]

The parts about us wanting to make it illegal and take away their right to worship is just rich. I'd like a cited example of this. Last I heard, there are tons of places for them to do their little worshipping. They're called churches. Do it there. Why is that not good enough? Oh, they want to do it in public also? How about we gather up a bunch of atheists to disrupt their church services?

Why is it so difficult for these people to understand the idea of "keep it to yourself, we don't want it."?

avatarNote that they disabled ratings after 15 of them resulted in an average of 1 star :)

I really don't think that these right wing Christian types understand the concept of an open forum for discussing ideas. There's this guy, the story Colbert talked about, and the other day on O'Reilly's radio show, he scoffed at a woman who called in and said that university students need to be exposed to ideas and decide for themselves what to believe.

avatarI have to agree with Russell. I know posts about burning Bibles and churches are just having a bit of fun. But Fundamentalists, almost by definition, don't get irony. Everything seems to be literal to them. So, I guess if you post the most humorous diatribe with tongue firmly in cheek; the godbots will interpret it as literal. Sad really, but that's the mentality we seem to have to tackle. Of course, I could and often have no idea what I'm talking about. So feel free to ignore or ridicule me. :)

avatarI think the maker of the video should remember that he who is without sin should cast the first stone.... The christians are well known for their book burning, and library burning (something I can never forgive them for).

The fact is, that their Bible is full of the nastiest type of hate crime propoganda there is, and if it didn't have it's status as the chosen holy book of christians it would have been banned or only released in edited form.

That they are so insecure in there religion and get worried by some mis-interpreted forum posts shows how truly feeble their mental state must be.

Also, while I agree that most holy-rollers don't get irony (it's one of the subroutines in the programming), our response should NOT be to stop being ironic. That said, many people who post on this site make extremely straightforward, non-ironical statements all the time, so it's not like we're all just a bunch of cat-calling jerks or something.

avatarSilly gits with their chicken little hysterics. Why jump to conclusions about stuff on these Interwebs, when you can message or email someone for clarification?.

That's what I'd do anyway. That way, if I read something that was mere reductio ad absurdum, or parody, or silliness, that I was in danger of taking the wrong way, I'd be saved the trouble of a needless freak out.

There's a reason journalists check hearsay before quoting it.

As far as I know, if you buy any book with your own cash, you can burn it. You can't take someone else's book and burn that. These boys alleged that "the atheists" want to take other people's Bibles. But that wasn't my impression from the post they quoted.

 avatarAnother hypocritical faith head!

He accuses RD of endorsing everything written on this forum. However, the below was taken directly from the Righteous Response Squad Ministries terms and conditions when you register for their forum.

Note that it is impossible for the staff or the owners of this forum to confirm the validity of posts. Please remember that we do not actively monitor the posted messages, and as such, are not responsible for the content contained within. We do not warrant the accuracy, completeness, or usefulness of any information presented. I pretty sure RD's site has a very similar policy when you register. He seems to have overlooked that small fact.

 avatarDemystifying christians

So here is yet another attempt, and once you hear the facts their twist straitens out. The thread in question is here;
http://www.richarddawkins.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=183496#p183496

I went through this thread all 86 post in 5 pages. I counted up the responses. Here is a break down;

There were 8 in favor.

45 post strongly against such an idea.

About 33 OT comments or the OP posting trying in vain to support his views.

Even the OP eventually started to recant his position once it was apparent that there was no support for his stupid idea.

Once again our community has spoken with a clear voice on this subject. Great job!

So why did they ignore ALL of that and quote mined, cheery picked the parts that they wanted. They dismissed ALL of the other post that contradicted their view. Why do facts scare them so, they lie to themselves and to us.

Yet another christian myth demystified.

 avatarHoly crap!

Now you all know first hand the type of dialog I have been up against for 40 years. This parrot of a priori is a cookie cutter copy of every bone head I grew up with, but avoided. Unless confronted by the exuberant proselytising of some misguided Bible thumper.

Ok class, what was that video a beautiful exemplification of...?
Right! Cherry picking, very good.

Quote mining! Another good one.

You can quote me on this: Nothing scares this type of person more than a free exchange of ideas, nothing. A dissenting view, is a call to arms.

To show this type that the bible condones slavery is only a mild irritant, secretly they wish slavery would come back to favor, but publicly would only stumble over the concept much like the word "Torah" from the video.

They are typically homophobic to an extreme, but are glad their book doesn't speak clearly and directly to incest.

But most importantly, the two most heinous things this Fundamentalist represents is hypocrisy and illiteracy, I mean, what he "knows" about the bible, he did not read in the bible. He is a tape recorder for his preacher who told him what to think and what he "knows".

Yea, bible-boy, I come from your neck of the woods.

Ok, let me do some fundamentalist-math [fath]. Let's see 8 for, 45 against.
8 x S = 11,900 for
45 x I = 0 against
Where S=satan multiplier and I=Ignorance, I didn't read them
You see it's a 100% majority!!! Clearly atheists are terrible at simple fath. What they didn't teach you fath in school? Well if fath shows that the world is 6000 years old it just as easily can show that all 11,900 member of this forum are pro-bible burning, anti-fath, anti-tor ... anti-toh ... anti-the-jewish-bible, pro-satan, and whatever else I want them to be.

The only basis he has is some kind of dim perception of a imagined threat to something he believes as if his life depends on it. Yet I dont know how to feel towards him.
He really is a perfect example of the credulous who are exploited by the religious charlatans. Yet he is a danger to himself and others. He, and others like him, could go from feeling persecuted to a persecutor in a wink of an eye. And I blame religion again, but where will this lead?

On the contrary, the bible explicitly condones incest, so long as there's no other alternatives within easy reach. See Lot, God's poster-boy.

I feel sorry for this guy. His faith is an accident of birth, and it's combined with a simple wit and a fundementalist-without-the-complicated-bits education. Had he been born in a more enlightened part of the world, he'd be a dim but harmless and well-meaning member of society.

As it is, he spends his time lying, distorting and propagandizing on YouTube, because the people around him tell him he's doing Jesus' work. He's a victim too, and a classic example of how religion poisons everything.

His parents and his pastor should be ashamed of themselves.
