Document Judgement Day: Intelligent Design on Trial

by NOVA, PBS

See:
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/id/

NOVA will be airing a new dramatization of the Dover, PA case on November 13 at 8:00 pm. I've added it to our calendar section as well, but I wanted to let everyone know that the website has a lot of other things to check out, so be sure to click above if you're interested.

I heard about this because the evangelicals have been circulating "warnings" regarding it; isn't it great when they do our work for us?

Just another case of ID being EXPELLED from somewhere. It's just not fair to these guys when someone takes them to court and uses things like evidence, a judge, and jury of their peers to show that ID is false. Sad, sad, sad...

avatarOops... just had a "slip of the mouse", and got a pop-up thanking me for reporting someone's comment. If it was yours - sorry, I didn't mean it!

Not to mention their own witnesses proving the plaintiff's point.
"Hey, that's mean! You never told me I was expected not to obfuscate!"

avatarID apparently stands for intelligent design. It could also stand for idiotic deficiency. Either way, the judge at Dover, apparently decided that ID was religion and was therefore not permitted, under the US constitution, to be be taught in US public schools.

What is depressing is that it took a court case in the world's most "advanced" nation, to decide whether or not ID is a viable alternative to the theory of evolution. Will American supremacy in science be swamped by these stone age Christians?
Probably not, but it will be a struggle.

My one regret is that actors playing Intelligent Design advocates are probably going to stutter and pause far less than they actually do, thus misrepresenting them as people who at least act like they know what they're talking about.

avatarI will definitely not miss the program. I hope it is accurate and not too dramatized. NOVA has such a good reputation for science programing, it should be a great show. Too bad most of the fundie bible thumpers will not see it. They gotta watch out for that lightening strike from Sky Daddy.

CRAP! The show is not available in Canada. At least from my cable company. I hope it shows up in Google or YouTube.

avatarWatch this in the meantime, very good British doc about the trial. Not sure if this has been posted here. Our favourite evolutionary biologist makes a few appearances.

avatarMost NOVA programs end up available on the web site (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/) not too long after airing. If all else fails you can buy a DVD or VHS of the program from the same site.

avatarBah I hope i get this show on the west coast of canada. Im pretty sure i get pbs.
It doesn't make sense that canada wouldn't get this show when half the networks i get through cable are american channels.
However i do love how international these posts seem to be, good to know that we are spread all over the world with the ability to communicate like this. Its a bit of a sad note that so many of these tv programs are american based. We need more international tv representation i say.
It would be nice to see shows like this come from religion dominated countries. I think its a good way to show the religious that we are among them everywhere.

The program will be shown at the URL provided after the 14th: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/id/program.html

For some reason I can't log onto the forum to post this message to everyone. Would you be so kind?
-----------------------------------------
I'm not sure if that link will help me. After reading about Judgement Day I went to NOVA to get more info about it. While I was there I saw another program that looked interesting. However that program was blocked. The explanation given was that NOVA didn't have the rights for distribution outside the US. Maybe that's the same reason my cable company is not carrying JD. We get the same problem with iTunes and other web services that sell TV shows. They're blocked from sale outside the US.

avatarI love the pull quote from Eugenie Scott about witnesses dropping like flies. As we know from her speeches she's talking about the pro-ID witnesses withdrawing when the case became a lost cause but with the dramatic music it sounds like Eric Rudolph was assassinating scientists or something. Classic.

Anyway, this is must see TV.

avatarThere! I got my login problem worked out.

BCReason, don't worry buddy, I'll get the program to you (and others) one way or another.

We should start a file sharing hub on DC++ just for atheist media. I would do so myself, but there is no hub hosting software for Mac.

avatarI just watched this show on PBS with my wife...

It was extremely well done. It showed both sides of the argument with sensitivity. I was also impressed that many of those fighting the good fight against Intelligent Design were in fact Christians themselves. (light at the end of a long dark tunnel?)

I was deeply saddened to hear that Judge Jones received Death threats... It reminds me of a case here in Manitoba,Canada, where the family of a boy who would not recite the lords prayer in school received 180 death threats and suffered numerous counts of vandalism, discrimmination and were kicked out of the community club.

AND we still have prayer in schools here... Yeesh!

sigh... sadly Christian faith does not always bring out the best in people...

Speaking of death threats of this and other cases like it, where is our homeland scurity that took away our rights of privacy of our comunication devices to protect us from these extreme religious people?

avatarMy wife and I enjoyed it. I was surprised (but glad!) it went two hours instead of the usual one. Almost I expected it to be "continued"... luckily not!

There were aspects of that whole event that I was unaware of. Especially impressive was the testimony by Michael Behe (not). And the perjury, concealment of evidence... it got better and better. A must-own!

Paraphrasing Victor Stenger: Are those that are so anxious to see evidence against evolution discussed in class, prepared to also include the evidence against God?
