Oh, those wacky creationists!

When they talk astronomy, you can almost be sure they will trot out long-outdated ideas, ridiculous twists of logic, and outright lies. And now you can find all these and more in a series of videos pointed out by Sadly, No!

I lost track at seven dumbnesses. I love how they say that if science is right, the planets should all be made of the same materials (um, no, things have changed in the 4.55 billion years since the planets formed, and smaller ones have lost their lighter atmospheric elements like hydrogen and helium), planets should all spin the same way (um, no, collisions with large bodies can flip over a planet), there are no explanations for the Moon's origin (um, no, actually we have a good one — a massive collision — that explains most of the bigger mysteries of the Moon), all the planets' moons should orbit the same way (um, no, some planets have captured asteroids, and those can orbit retrograde), and that if the Universe were not formed in an explosion, it must have been created (um, no, there are at least two other alternate explanations that dovetail with the Big Bang).

I think my fave is when they say that young stars don't have enough material orbiting them to make planets. Yeah, that's because the material has already been used to make planets (or it's been blown away by the young star's solar wind)! It's like eating a meal, looking at your empty plate, and saying "I can't possibly have eaten anything, since there is nothing on my plate." You have to look at really young stars, and when you do, you see them enshrouded in material, and many of them have a disk of matter that is clearly forming planets.

How many dumbosities can you find? I may have to dig up the complete video. I'm sure it's good from some schadenfreude.

avatarI can't use QT on my WinME 'puter.

QT required XP on the last version, so I've been using a pirate codec, but now even the new pirate codec demands XP.

How about MPEG?
Everyone can open MPEG.

On the video, however; as I mentioned on the Bad Astronomer's site, the damn thing is a deliberate and considered lie.

That really bothers me. It's a lie. Deliberate mis-information targeted at children. How disgusting is that?

avatarThe problem with quicktime is that it's a proprietary format, so you have to either decode it with the official quicktime decoder or a decoder which has been written through reverse engineering. It would be better to use an open format that's fair game for everyone. Mpeg works but I would like to suggest Ogg Theora.

I saw some people the other day handing out free copies of this DVD in the city where I live. I was going to try to act all interested and get them to give me loads of copies to give to my friends - but then throw them all in a bin in a bid to save a few other people from them - but I know I can't act that well, so I didn't bother.

Luckily, I did see several copies in the rubbish and abandoned on cafe tables further up the street - looks like people dumped them pretty quick when they realised what they were!

avatarI wonder if the creationistas have an explanation for why god would make some planets of different materials, of different sizes, with/without moons, moons orbiting retrograde, orbits out of the plane of the ecliptic, etc.

What? No explanation? Is that a *GAP* ??

Sorry, it's just the "mysterious ways" thing. Oh, well...

Why not embed the media in your own flash player that has nothing to do with youtube?

From a cross browser/platform standpoint, flash would probably offer the most/easiest compatability. Which is probably why youtube uses it in the first place.

avatarDiacanu here is a link to Quicktime Alternative v1.56 (last version to support Win9x) http://mirror.edskes.net/.

I personally like the open standard of mp4. I hate flash based players since I prefer to download than capture streams (latency is not good in my part of the world). It also uses better compression than mp1/2, thus smaller file sizes versus quality.

If rd.net would keep the compression non qt v7 then we wouldn't have the trouble of Win9x compatibility. This file is perfect IMO. Windows users can download K-Lite basic or standard over at www.free-codecs.com . The bundled Media Player Classic is a light resource using application that handles qt, real and flash.

It's times like this when I doubt that creationists even know what gravity is. If they had even taken a basic class in Physics, they would have known that Sun's gravity is so high that it causes itself to condense in the middle. Gas Giants gravity are also very high, so they can hold on to their gases. Rocky planets are small and have weak gravity, so lighter gases can't be held on to.

What ARE children being taught in schools if there is a single person, of any age, who falls for this crap?

There is a great comment on the YouTube version of this....

Applemask
"What the Herman is wrong with you people? All planets must be identical to the sun? And each other?

You're making Jesus cry. Leave teaching to people who know things".

I don't think the Fraunhoffer institute would agree with you about the open nature of the mpeg standard.

MPEG 4 as an open container (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPEG & http://www.chiariglione.org/mpeg/) set forth by ISO, not as a codec. Xvid is open/free, Divx is free to use non commercially, 3ivx too. Qt is almost the same as Divx, only with more restrictions on the use. They all are superior standards to MPEG 1 and 2. Rd.net should use a free to use codec that is MPEG 4 level 2, to maintain Win9x compatibility, unlike QT v7 which is MPEG 4 level 11.

Fraunhoffer was upset because their codec version of MPEG 1 level 3 aka .mp3 was abused - a codec for audio. That is why a lot of players & encoders now use a free standard of .mp3 - LAME etc.

avatarI would say Ogg Vorbis (audio) and Theora (video) even if they are obscure-ish. RD.net should just post a link to their page ( www.xiph.org ) for the latest version of the codec like they do with Quicktime. There are links to plugins for Windows (DirectShow), Mac (Quicktime) and Linux/Unix users. Shouldn't be too hard since they are multi-platform and free. Obscured by Clouds , you guys could simply post the last page for the download of the filters for every platform.

And what if the universe WAS created by a big explosion? Then the rest is garbage.... well, ok... the rest is garbage anyway, but at least they do SAY it could all be wrong.

This is SO reminiscent of the "If the theory of natural selection is wrong, the only other explanation is GODDIDIT".

Watch out for the court cases regarding the demands for the "alternative theory of astronomy" to be taught in science classes.

The creationists have been pretty much beaten on the evolution front... this is the next one.

Also, is the implication supposed to be that the chap at the beginning is a scientist? It is laughable, the whole thing. A good sign in a way, they are clearly grasping at straws.

To all of you out there who don't like QuickTime: Richard Dawkins is, and has been for as long as I've seen him use computers, an Apple fan boy, and I'm guessing Josh Timonen that runs this site is too. So we're stuck with QT. No getting around it.
