Document Darwin Day (Feb 12th) E-Cards

by RichardDawkins.net

February 12th is Darwin Day, and we thought it might be fun to ask you to create web "e-cards" to celebrate the day. We will then post our favorites to the site for everyone to use. If you'd like to send in a submission, please email it to darwincards@richarddawkins.net . Thanks!

Tiktaalik should certainly feature, given its relative prominence as an evolutionary talking point.

avatarMaybe a bulldog with a tiktaalik between his jaws shaking it!!

Darwins Bulldog takes evolution by the teeth!!

I think one of the stupid Christian fish symbols that you find on the back of cars would be a much better candidate for a bull dog mouthful.

Alternatively:

Three monkeys sitting next to a priest, with the caption, "Evolve - we did".

A picture of Mike Huckabee standing next to Anne Robinson, with the caption, "You are the missing link, good bye".

A baby child, with Bin Laden and Darwin looking down on them, with the caption, "Who would you rather have teaching YOUR children ?"

i understand why bulldog would be good, but perhaps a more subtle and apropos image would be a beagle instead? :)

Here's another one

Four of the most brightly coloured, oddly shaped, intriguing beetles, with the caption, "John, Paul, George,Ringo and one million other species of beetle wish Charles Darwin a happy birthday!"

I guess I should crank out a photo package and knock some of these up.

Without wishing to wee on anyone's fireworks, may I suggest that E-cards are not a good thing to be sending anywhere, given the recent proliferation of E-card spam mails that redirect to supremely dodgy sites. I would venture that no-one of any basic computer security knowledge would now even think about clicking on any E-card link they were sent, perhaps even if they knew the (apparent)sender. And rightly so in most cases.

So - maybe another format is preferable ? Possibly an email-able Jpg (although of course most email apps also block pictures from display by default), or perhaps a flash presentation hosted on an existing web site where people could click an email link to view it. Or even a mailable powerpoint presentation, such as they are...

But I quite agree, it would be nice to send round something...

avatarThree monkeys and a priest is cracking me up...good one Dr. Unfortunately, I can't share it with anyone here at work. The guy next to me just confided that his church is coming up with the money for a new high school, Pope John Paul High School. Thank dog for the internets.

 avatarFeb 12th is Darwins Birthday

(Sorry to spell it out, but I missed why the date was significant and thought it might have been the publishing date of "On the Origin of Species" or something like that)

I like the idea of Darwin Day cards. And I can think of a couple of people to send them to as well.

Kent Hovind. Michael Behe. Ken Ham*.

I think they'd all appreciate the sentiment.

Whats a E-Card?
A "card" sent by e-mail. It usually then gives you a link to click, and you see a web page with a message and perhaps some kind of animation in.

20. Comment #114369 by riemann on January 22, 2008 at 4:53 am

I realise it's not quite fair to Darwin, but here's one: Darwin is wearing a party hat, a background poster reads 'Happy Darwin Day', all sorts of animals and plants partying around, obviously a celebration thing going on. Darwin, having just opened his gift, The Selfish Gene, thinks (after Huxley) the following:

"How extremely stupid of me not to have thought of that! This Dawkins fellow has got game."

24. Comment #114407 by tatestreet on January 22, 2008 at 6:53 am

Or, how about an illustration showing the evolution of the birthday cake! Start with the one-layer cake, followed by the stone cake. Man discovers fire, so the next cake has a candle. And so on.

26. Comment #114445 by bluehillside on January 22, 2008 at 8:06 am

Or how about one of those evolutionary family tree thingies with Autralopithecus etc towards the bottom, but with "H. Religious Believer" about half way up (maybe opposite "H. Neanderthalensis") on the dead end branches an "H. Rationalis" at the top. Underneath the whole thing would be "12 FEBRUARY:DARWIN DAY"

Too subtle maybe?

27. Comment #114465 by RichardPrins on January 22, 2008 at 8:52 am

avatarNo need for complex web pages, etc. A nice image will do just fine! Though if someone is able to make something in, let's say Flash, that would be cool too!

30. Comment #114519 by Epinephrine on January 22, 2008 at 11:02 am

avatarI think we need one with the bacterial flagellum - unfortunately I am no artist.

Oooh, or perhaps a twist on the "it's turtles all the way down" logic, showing fossils of turtle evolution at different depths, "it's *not* turtles all the way down".

Other Comments by Epinephrine

31. Comment #114525 by Paula Kirby on January 22, 2008 at 11:15 am

avatarOr a sequence of pictures in their correct evolutionary order:

a bacterium, a reptile, a dinosaur, a bird, a mammal, an ape, a hominid, a homo sapiens - and then a big question mark and the words "Whatever next?"

It never does any harm to remind people that homo sapiens is just passing through and not the final word.

avatarI have submitted 5 entries to darwincards@richarddawkins.net. I'm not sure if it is right to post links to them here yet, or just wait for the judges to decide?

I like many of the ideas here as well, like Epinephrine's idea of a artistic flagellum and Paula Kirby's "evolutionary order" idea, etc...

If I can make time, I will try my hand at these designs, and submit them. I wonder what the deadline is, or when the favorites will be posted.

34. Comment #114598 by FXR on January 22, 2008 at 12:54 pm

avatarHow about a line of graphics
of man evolving and along the way at the neandertal stage he's using a church spire as a club and when he finally stands upright he's just thrown off the weight of the cross that was weighing him down and preventing him reachin his full height?

Other Comments by FXR

35. Comment #114614 by bluehillside on January 22, 2008 at 1:26 pm

OK, got it. How about that famous picture with the crouching ape on the left and a series of evolving figures to the right of it ending with modern man. Only here the penultimate figure is a bishop in full regalia (or a Jerry Falwell figure, or a group of clerics) and the final, evolved figure is Charles Darwin.

As before, underneath the caption: 12 FEBRUARY: DARWIN DAY

>>"John, Paul, George,Ringo and one million other species of beetle wish Charles Darwin a happy birthday!"

Winner! More like this.
Simple, clever and a good opportunity for a lovely visual image.

I think "smart alec" political comments should be avoided like the plague, they look cheap, date quickly, and don't do justice to the ideas.

I don't know where the original drawings came from but I know RD has used it a lot.

While we're on the subject most of the ideas posted would also be great for T-shirts in addition to the Darwin Day cards.

avatarSending cards to your representatives in government is a great idea Beth. You can be sure each of my bible-toting redneck congressional delegates are going to receive one!

And for those who think they have no artistic talent just think of "art" as visual Karaoke; simply toss back a few and go for it.

If you don't have the software look for a demo or shareware version of a simple drawing or image editor…raster would probably be easier than vector.

I haven't heard a bad idea yet I have to say.

- Could also be on that e-card, although, admittedly, it's too provocative to raise any consciousness...

48. Comment #114872 by j.mills on January 23, 2008 at 4:59 am

avatarHmm. Don't most of these ideas support the creationist position that evolution by natural selection is the opposite of religion? It's not DAWKINS Day! It was irrational to believe in gods long before Darwin.

Natural selection is "the best damn idea anybody ever had". Cards should celebrate it on its own merits, not as a gloating tool.

(I appear to have my po-faced head on today...)

"Except they were called the Beatles... "

You mean the band? True, but by an amazingly unlikely coincidence - "beatles" and "beetles" have EXACTLY the same pronunciation! It is something called a "pun". Notice the original text spelled "beetles" correctly, and the "beetles" were the ones sending greetings.

>>j.mills

I agree. Why "gloat" about something so obviously true? It gets stale quickly. Let's celebrate!
