Great video, but loose the Realplayer please!

3. Comment #2825 by Ryan on October 23, 2006 at 9:42 pm

ardent polemics, and terrible fun. many thanks, Dawkins.

Ugh, RealPlayer sucks.

5. Comment #2841 by Basil on October 24, 2006 at 3:13 am

Isn't it nice to allow oneself to imagine that evenings like the one in this video represent the beginnings of a new groundswell?
While RD is probably right in suspecting that his speeches are impolitic, his intellectual honesty more than makes up for it. Let others do the negotiating, Richard should never sue for peace.

Why can't they just provide a reliable download link to the video? Enough with this streaming nonsense.

7. Comment #2857 by Martin on October 24, 2006 at 4:58 am

If anyone manages to save a copy of this video could they provide a link. I can't even stream it at the moment, it refuses totally. Maybe there are too many fans of RD trying to grab it at the same time.

Let's hope it turns up on youtube or google video soon.

RealPlayer is evil.

Please provide some kind of alternative, open source format is possible.

I wouldn't mind the realplayer issue if it worked. Currently the link is unreachable.

I would buy this lecture from the iTunes music store in a sec.

Cheers!

I think we ought to support that 'Gates the atheist' Windows Media Player :)

Re: Hugh

Frankly, teaching this to your children is almost making it into a religion itself. You think it's any less indoctrination than Sunday school? They're too young to understand religion, but they're also too young to understand why religion is bad. (well, you didn't say how old your kids were, but I'm assuming young.) It's like sex. Yes you should talk to your kids about it, and earlier is better than later, but there's definitely such a thing as too early.

Finally got to see it. It was excellent.

Richard seemed to get a bit tongue tied during the questions. Since I know that he knows those lines and stuff by heart, i suspect he was suffering from a bit of stage fright, possibly because he knows just how important his message is in America, and especially in the bigot-belt.

I have to say... that watching the film was worth it just for the final few words from Richard: "Six years of Bush....", watch it and learn the context :P although I suspect many could guess.

"Give me a boy until he is seven, and I will give you the man" has been attributed to St. Francis Xavier, St. Ignatius of Loyola and is found, much later, in the feeble thinking of behavioral psychologist B.F. Skinner. Walden Two, anybody?

Richard at his very best.
During the part of his speech where he covered religion in Ireland, he paused, and there was complete silence in the building.

It was a serious moment, a moment perhaps where a lot of people realised how serious this issue is

It's 1.30 in the morning; I've just finished watching the video. Couldn't stop.

Succinct, compelling, humourous, honest, thought provoking and emotional. Wonderfully, simply wonderful!

On ch4 of the God Delusion and the more you read, the more you see, the more you hear, the more it all makes sense.

Only problem now will be getting to sleep...

Yes, I use Real Alternative as well.

Can someone please post this in something *other* than RealPlayer format?

18. Comment #3179 by Kevin Ronayne on October 26, 2006 at 6:55 am

After several attempts, I have managed to capture and convert this into .AVI (DIVX 6) format. That's the good news. The bad news is that it's over 750MB in size, presumably because I was reencoding on the fly. If I had been able to capture it in raw format (no compression), I might have been able to then reencode later down to something a lot smaller than this. An uncompressed intermediate file would be enormous of course, but I think I have enough disk space. BTW, the original Real Player file is about 125 MB in size - you can see it in your browser cache if you let it load completely, but you can't use the damn thing afterwards, not in any way that I can see.

Any advice from video gurus would be appreciated, as I'm willing to try again if there is a realistic chance of producing a reasonably sized file.

Thanks for putting this video up! I am reading the book, but my learning style has always been that I get much more out lecture than written word. It would be great to have Dr. Dawkins speak in Arizona, perhaps a state in even higher need of solid science than Kansas...

Re: Comment #3531 by Brian Dean

Brian,

thanks for the heads-up. I will try mencoder when I have a free moment. The command line bit doesn't scare me at all: I hail from ye olden days when 'windows' still meant something you looked through, and a 'mac' was something you wore in the rain.

This video link has been broken for at least a month for me. it will not work on any computer I have tried.

in fact, ALL of the Real Player videos on this website do not work. all of them. not a single one. why has this gone unfixed for so long?
