One of the most entertaining audio shows so far, good stuff!

2. Comment #3234 by Janus on October 26, 2006 at 5:45 pm

That was great, most of the questions were new, original, and very interesting (even if not always relevant to The God Delusion).

Yet another excellent performance by Prof. Dawkins. And btw, I beg to differ, you are _extremely_ eloquent.

Love how Richard adapts his style to the type of interview: "What really pisses me off..." haha

Hah, you're right, that took me by surprise.

I believe in something bigger than me- Penn Jillette.

Penn vs. Dawkins! Is the crowd here okay with fangirl squeeing? Because I'm totally squeeing right now. It's wonderful that Dr. Dawkins is all over American media these days. We need you more than ever, Professor. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

A great interview!
You used to be able to watch the Penn and Teller Bullshit "The Bible" on Google Video. Sadly not now.

ackbar, funnier than Dawkins saying "oh god no" is Christians saying "well I'll be damned"...

Alan Clark - thank you for the link to the Bible is Bullshit piece by Penn & Teller. To the RD webmaster - that's a good link to add to the page.

Does anyone know if Penn and Teller have done a Bullshit show on Islam? I guess they wouldn't be alive if they had or else their lawyers won't let them as South Park writers were stopped from tackling that tricky subject. I am one of the anti-Shari law protestors in Ontario, Canada. We stopped that group from dividing common law and giving misogynists even more power over women.

That was extraordinairily satisfying.
He says he's not eloquent....pshaw!
That's one of my favorite things about him!

This is an intersting listen!

I enjoyed it thoroughly - and I learned that in the 'Bible Belt' of America, there are people that want to hear what Professor Dawkins has to say!

I find that a positive aspect of the whole march on the search for truth.

Kind Regards, William.

This may be fun for you too.

The test at this link http://www.commongood.org/worldview_quiz.htm will give you an idea about your brain, faith-based or reason-based. The “World View Quiz” is just 24 anonymous clicks. Try to take it with the frame of mind you had before you read Dawkins, Harris or Sagan and see where you end? Then take it again with the reason based mind you possess now and compare!

Richard won’t mind if we have some fun with this.

Great audio!

I have read The God Delusion and everyone must RUN out and get it. Thank you Professor Dawkins for helping us to wake from our dogmatic slumber here in the U.S. I just bought The Blind Watchmaker and I can't wait to get started on it.
Thank you again for your courage.

With deepest gratitude and respect,
Tony

That's disheartening Matthew, but thanks for posting it. Definitely a strange choice to call "bullshit" on. Especially with the evidence pouring in (literally) about the icecaps melting etc.

We need a grass roots campaign to insert that disclaimer at the end into every bible we can get our hands on...

16. Comment #3389 by The Atheist Jew on October 28, 2006 at 7:50 am

The one thing I don't like about the Penn and Teller video is that they stated that Jesus most likely existed and mentioned Josephus as a reason for thinking that. Josephus wrote an account about Jesus 50 years after the "fact."
There were 42 historians alive from 1-35 AD, and not a contemporary word was written about the "Son of God"
I'm pretty certain that Paul made up Jesus around 50-55 AD and he made the story up based on the going myths of the time. He amalgamated them. He also had a receptive audience for the friendly God who offered life everlasting, because the vengeful God was turning a blind eye to the Jews as they were getting their asses kicked on earth by the Romans at the time.
Paul was the James Frey of 2000 years ago.

Great again from Dawkins but that Penn & Teller video is fecking brilliant and hilarious. There is also more great stuff on Http://ThrowawayyourTV.com.

Is there an evolutionary advantage to believing in the bible? An evolutionary advantage to feelling happy spiritual crap? If there isn't a reason, something Dawkins never addresses, then it is a purely faith based crit.

Um, you might want to actually read his book before making a fool of yourself. There's a whole chapter discussing possible evolutionary reasons for the existence of religion.

Richard, please come to Australia, and have a read of my article: "Which is Stronger: Manfluence or Godfluence?"

There are more options than deity, liar or lunatic. For example - the stories got exaggerated until they got written down. Even the true parts in them could have been originally about different people. The most you can say is that someone managed to come up with a collection of teachings, but then, that was a common effort both in the Greco-Roman world and in the Jewish culture of the time.

21. Comment #6147 by Randy Ping on November 12, 2006 at 9:28 pm

Wow, it's amazing how little Christians know about their MYTH.

22. Comment #6275 by Toxic Razor on November 13, 2006 at 1:03 pm

That was a great interview. So glad Richard is doing his thing in America. With some good old perserverance and work by all like minded people, hopefully at some future date the scourge of religion will be wiped away, especially in America, where some of those Christian Fundamentalists are just down right scary!

avatarThe video was priceless! I would love to see it on prime time TV. Great interview with Dr. Dawkins as well. I am actually happy to read in the foregoing comments that a few Xians took the time to tap in. A seed may have been planted and as we all know, it is liable to evolve.

I found the comment about eugenics very interesting, and it is one I've heard before but on which I had not heard Dawkin's view.

In addition to the negative social implications I thought I might add that evolutionarily it would have some negative effects also. If you take the canine example for instance, pure bred dogs (especially those that have been bred in a singular direction, for a singular purpose) have the shortest life spans and suffer from heart problems, cancer and arthritis at a dramatically higher rate than mutts and mongrel breeds.

I thought this might serve as an a-ethical perspective on the question.
