I agree with Richard....It won't be long before more and more believers get there heads screwed on the right way. It would be safe to say that the "moderates" are likely to do so first.3. Comment #164033 by Layla Nasreddin on April 19, 2008 at 12:45 pm

Layla, hearing a story like yours gives me great joy. Persevere, keep asking those questions and don't let the bastards drag you down.10. Comment #164133 by robotaholic on April 19, 2008 at 3:42 pm

Message for 'He'sAVeryNaughtyBoy': I understand your question and I think it's a good one.12. Comment #164141 by babrock on April 19, 2008 at 3:53 pm
Layla. Yes. I am sure we all wish you t best in your new life, not holding out hope for any help from imaginary friends.13. Comment #164144 by Jayday on April 19, 2008 at 4:00 pm
Richard Dawkins was once again articulate and clear. Always a breath of fresh air. Dawkins saying that he is encouraged by letters and those he meets on his tour was quite gracious. Layla, you are indeed a courageous person for questioning your beliefs and making a decision to go in a different direction that you know is right for you. I am so happy that Professor Dawkins mentioned your letter. Best wishes to you! You are not alone.14. Comment #164145 by Layla Nasreddin on April 19, 2008 at 4:01 pm

Can I ask though, what do you reckon has been the hardest thing about your recent experiences? I'd love to understand the mind of someone who believes in a god (or at least used to believe) in a bit more detail than simply calling them a "fucktard". I'd like to know what was the biggest stumbling block for you, the greatest thing that got in your way of feeling free.

Layla - when I listened to the interview I thought it might be you! I never knew your faith was 'draining away', though that is excellent news! I hope you don't have too many personal problems resulting from it (family/friends, etc). 17. Comment #164155 by He'sAVeryNaughtyBoy on April 19, 2008 at 4:33 pm
Hi Layla, I think I've got an idea of where you're coming from. I ended up having a bit of a heated discusion with my little brother not six months ago about something similar.18. Comment #164157 by MonkeyMagoo on April 19, 2008 at 4:38 pm
He'sAVeryNaughtyBoy: no worries - I wasn't offended and I doubt anyone else was either! :) Just wanted to make the point that most religious people aren't idiots.19. Comment #164158 by Enlightenme.. on April 19, 2008 at 4:38 pm

I suppose it's human nature to hope that there is something out there watching us. I'd love to know the reasoning of that.

Good for you Vanitas. Same with me (my familiy is Christian).25. Comment #164187 by Layla Nasreddin on April 19, 2008 at 5:16 pm
I would like to begin by congratulating you, Layla, on your deconversion. I was brought up a Muslim myself, although my faith faded into something more like deism by my teenage years.
But I am glad to say that it was Professor Dawkins' writings that dealt the final blow to my faith last year.
I'm only 19 now, and it's been the hardest thing "coming out" to my parents, and i suppose even now i've still got one foot in the closet. But I guess it's a gradual thing, and the more you make a stand for yourself, the easier it becomes and the more you gain the respect you deserve.

Whilst he professed himself to being an atheist, he couldn't help but feel that there was someone looking over him, guiding his life. He reckoned it was the spirit of our grandad. I suppose it's human nature to hope that there is something out there watching us. I'd love to know the reasoning of that.

Like Jayday, I also found Shermer's tone rather strange. It's as if there's nothing at stake in the issue. He seems completely undisturbed about the fate of science in in his country.35. Comment #164211 by Zamboro on April 19, 2008 at 5:51 pm

Also I am sick of hearing Professor Dawkins' "tone" being questioned - is it "good for the campaign" to be so outspoken. Atheism is habitually associated with nazism. I find his responses and general tone articulate, polite, reasonable, open, engaging, and his response to ignorant boorish interviewers is stunningly patient. Any atheist who has a problem with Dawkins' tone is a quisling.

sounds like my dad Mitchell Gilks- he's closed to everything I talk about because he thinks it's a sinister plot to sneak in atheism somehow - no matter what scientific topic it is - i personally really cannot stand anyone who turns off at the sound of science- and I also think it's a shame and I don't understand that point of view either-46. I just received an eSkeptics email in which Shermer eviscerates Expelled. As for the podcast interview, Shermer simply sounded level headed. It is quite a stretch to take this as Shermer not caring much about the rationalist view point. By not getting overly excited and worked up, he helps his own credibility, especially with anyone in the general media looking for balanced and dispassionate assessments. Dawkins may be right that Expelled is downright horrid. Shermer may be right that the movie nevertheless succeeds at its intended purpose. It doesn't take much to titillate a fundu audience ... frankly they're not scientifically savvy and not altogether bright. One simply has to beat them up into an emotional lather to stir them to action.49. Comment #164316 by ASMarques on April 20, 2008 at 3:34 am
Jayday said:
I've got to say that once again I am baffled by Michael Shermer's response. I am still trying to figure him out and trying to understand what he really thinks. [...] Has anyone else been to the Skeptics Society lectures with Shermer and seen a shift in his public behavior? I am open to others perspectives. It is really baffling to me.
dyak said:
I don't know his work at all, but I can't help but wonder if he is not seeking out a market niche as a "tolerant sceptic" or something.

What's up with Shermer? Anyone have any information.
