avatarYou can also get it, free of delivery, from Play.com (Play appear to be the official CH4 store, as it will take you there if you visited the www . channel4 . com / shop link advertised at the end of the aired version).

Personally, I'm going for THIS one.

avatarAmazon.co.uk also have a full set of the most recent Dawkins documentaries - Genius, Enemies and Root here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Richard-Dawkins-Collection/dp/B0016OMFLQ/ref=pd_sbs_d_h__1

The description doesn't say if it comes with any extras, and apparently it is only 1 dvd, so if I had the choice I'd probably opt for the sets from RDFRS instead.

avatarRegion coding is such a pain. I'm happy you're doing a proper release though.

avatarThank you Richard Dawkins so very much for making these documentaries. You're a true hero.

I just wonder one thing. Watching episode two, you come to the conclusion altruism only occurs if we're kin, because we want to help our genes to further. The problem is that you leave out the interspecies altruism that undoubtedly occurs as well. I understand if you couldn't bring it up due to its complexity and time constraints, but I'm afraid many left the episode wondering about it.

If I misunderstood anything, I'm sorry in advance.

Edit: Watching it again I realize you don't say altruism only occurs if we're kin, but you don't get into interspecies altruism either.

avatarIn many books, Dawkins (and others) gives the answer to your question. Interspecies relationships typically have benefits to both species.

I don't really see why he would go into interspecies altruism, since the program was about our altruism to each other, not an elephants altruism to others species.

If you are curious as to why humans are altruistic to other species, it is hard to find altruistic acts towards other species in the first place, that aren't clearly beneficial to ourselves, but when you do, I would say Richards idea about are genes for helping kin extending to other humans (in this case other life forms) still holds.

In addition, just because something is not beneficial, does not mean it can not exist within light of evolution, especially when talking about behavior. Sometimes behaviors are not beneficial, but are there because some brain region evolved that supports multiple behaviors.

This is wonderful but is there any chance of a BluRay version being released?

avatarI fell out with my dad whilst watching the 2nd programme.

He was adament that all the early humans were all banished from the modern human settlements because they were the result of humans mating with more 'primative' apes. Also, he asserted that we weren't apes, we were seperate. And yes, he asserted that we humans as we appear now were around 7 million years ago. In cities.

I tried to get him on the internet, look at books and yet he gave me the usual ad hominem arguments - i'm close minded, gullible, oh all sorts! Quite upsetting when your old man starts to speak crazy stuff - he was the one that introduced me to astronomy when I was young. It was such a powerful experience that I'm looking forward to doing the same thing to my kids when I get round to having them!

Very sad.

But the series is brilliant!!!

Does anyone want to read some more crazy stuff?

Here's a link to the BBC's 'christian topic' forum

One word to describe it - woah!

 avatarPadster,

So sorry to hear of your falling out. That happened with me and a few choice members of my family a few years back when I rejected religion. I hope you and your father can at least put aside differences enough to stay civil; nothing worse than having a family member you used to respect hate you because of what you believe (or don't believe).

Thanks for that link too, I had a right laugh at the username "persecuted" - I'm sure he/she's really under tremendous torture at the hands of the big bad scientists.

 avatarPadster

My deepest regrets to your falling out with your father. While my father attends church every sunday he's not fundamentally religious and he's tolerant of my atheism, to such a degree we remain father and son and friends at the same time. It's deeply sad when something like this happens, I hope you resolve it soon?

By the way loved the link! My first thought on reading it was "Fucking hell, can this guy not construct paragraphs properly?" while my second was "Yikes!"

I like what it says on the back cover of the DVD: "He takes us to Lambeth Palace... to visit that spectacularly well preserved fossil... the Archbishop of Canterbury". Or did my eye slip a line there?

Richard's on top form as always in this excellent programme.

It's worth the price alone for the hilarious Rowan Williams interview!

Especially the look on Richard's face when the Archbishop acknowledges that his own use of "poetic language" could be viewed as a way of "wriggling out of hard questions". Priceless.

avatar@Sherbrooke: I hear a rumour that the BBC is working on one for release in 2009, but I can't find a reference right now.

@everyone: If you've bought a copy of this, have you had any problems with it? I have the Richard Dawkins Collection (which includes the Darwin programmes), and the DVD menus don't work on a DVD player, though they do on a Mac.

avatarCan't wait for the "un-cut" interviews DVD for this series...these are a treasure trove; really wish there were more of these from other documentaries , (would especially love to see one from RDs interviews with Ted Haggard!)
