Document Palin: average isn't good enough

ALSO SEE: Palin exposes herself as a religious nut on video

She's not qualified to be president, and in picking her, McCain shows that he has little respect for the presidency.

So let us ask the question that should be on the mind of every thinking person in the world at this moment: If John McCain becomes the 44th president of the United States, what are the odds that a blood clot or falling object will make Sarah Palin the 45th?

The actuarial tables on the Social Security Administration website suggest that there is a better than 10% chance that McCain will die during his first term in office. Needless to say, the Reaper's scything only grows more insistent thereafter. Should President McCain survive his first term and get elected to a second, there is a 27% chance that Palin will become the first female U.S. president by 2015. If we take into account McCain's medical history and the pressures of the presidency, the odds probably increase considerably that this bright-eyed Alaskan will become the most powerful woman in history.

As many people have noted, placing Palin on the ticket has made these final months of the already overlong 2008 campaign much more interesting. Is Palin remotely qualified to be president of the United States? No. But that's precisely what is so interesting. McCain not only has thrown all sensible concerns about good governance aside merely to pander to a sliver of female and masses of conservative Christian voters, he has turned this period of American history into an episode of high-stakes reality television: Don't look now, but our cousin Sarah just became leader of the free world! Tune in next week and watch her get sassy with Pakistan!

Americans have an unhealthy desire to see average people promoted to positions of great authority. No one wants an average neurosurgeon or even an average carpenter, but when it comes time to vest a man or woman with more power and responsibility than any person has held in human history, Americans say they want a regular guy, someone just like themselves. President Bush kept his edge on the "Who would you like to have a beer with?" poll question in 2004, and won reelection.

This is one of the many points at which narcissism becomes indistinguishable from masochism. Let me put it plainly: If you want someone just like you to be president of the United States, or even vice president, you deserve whatever dysfunctional society you get. You deserve to be poor, to see the environment despoiled, to watch your children receive a fourth-rate education and to suffer as this country wages -- and loses -- both necessary and unnecessary wars.

McCain has so little respect for the presidency of the United States that he is willing to put the girl next door (soon, too, to be a grandma) into office beside him. He has so little respect for the average American voter that he thinks this reckless and cynical ploy will work.

And it might. Palin's nomination has clearly excited Christian conservatives, and it may entice a few million gender-obsessed fans of Hillary Clinton to vote entirely on the basis of chromosomes. Throw in a few million more average Americans who will just love how the nice lady smiles, and 2009 could be a very interesting year.

Tune in next week and watch cousin Sarah fuss with our nuclear arsenal ... .

8/03/08 - UPDATE FROM SAM

I've received more than the usual amount of criticism for my recent opinion piece on Sarah Palin, most of it alleging sexism and/or an unseemly infatuation with Barack Obama. For those who care, I'd like to briefly respond:

My alleged sexism: It is true that I used some hackneyed, gender-slanted language in the piece ("get sassy," "girl-next-door," etc.). This was deliberate. Clearly, I played this game at my peril. I can say that if Sarah Palin were a man of similar qualifications, I would have used equally slanted language to describe him. I might have called Mr. Palin a "frat-boy" or a "lumberjack." I would have invoked some silly macho phrasing like,"Watch Cousin Jim flip Putin the bird." My concern is not that Mrs. Palin is a woman. My concern is that she is a totally unqualified and poorly educated woman who was added to the Republican ticket as a token woman (and Creationist wacko). For what it's worth, the article was vetted by the two women closest to me (wife and mother) and by two female editors at the LA Times. If anything, the editing at the Times made the piece even more "sexist."

My alleged Obamamania: Many McCain supporters have written to say that (1) Obama is also unqualified (or even less qualified than Palin) and (2) I have shown myself to be a hypocrite by not objecting to Obama's religiosity. Briefly: My criticism of Palin should not be construed as uncritical acceptance of Obama. Needless to say, I find Obama's religious pandering repulsive. The suspicion that he is pandering, out of obvious necessity, and not quite as religious as he makes out, is somewhat comforting, however. But even if Obama were precisely as religious as he appears, he is not a Creationist, Rapture-Ready blockhead. Palin, by all appearances, seems to be one. This is a difference worth noting. Whatever you may think of his politics, Obama is very intelligent and reasonably well educated. Palin thinks the universe is 6000 years old. Unfortunately, I wrote my article before some of the most disturbing signs of her religious extremism came to light.

So, let me simply declare that I would be overjoyed to have a qualified woman in the White House. I would, likewise, be overjoyed to have a qualified African American in the White House. In fact, I would be overjoyed to have a qualified WASP man in the White House. I will be guardedly optimistic to have a very smart (and somewhat qualified) Barack Obama in the White House. And I would be frankly terrified to have a religious bumpkin like Sarah Palin in the White House. I think you should share this last conviction. Hence my latest opinion piece.

Best,
Sam

*chuckles* What you said, quantum_flux.

Am I the only one who notices what it says about the Obama campaign that they have to argue that their pick for President might be more qualified than McCain's pick for VP?

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear...

As regards the whole election in the US, what Palin's priest says is no less loony than Obama's. And there is one crucial point:

Iran is building nukes. An apocalyptic, messianic regime wants WMDs. Now, which of those candidates is more likely to put a stop to that?

To ask the question is to answer it.

Obama's priest is not up for election. Sarah Palin is. Listen to the speech (above) that she herself (the one who seriously aspires to be Vice President) made in her church. Marvel at her use of the English language, let alone her opinions. Spread it around. Encourage everybody to listen to this woman's own words. Spread this video from sea to shining sea.

the atheist conservative article is so ridiculously opinionated. whether its got a point or not, affected speech such as "screaming" and a cheap shot at him for not being able to speak without a teleprompter.

atheist conservative sounds just like my idea of a right wing rubbish bin of ideas.

by implication:

doesnt highlighting obama's possible links with people who support the black value system as if it were a bad point suggest that the article is pandering to a racist anti-black agenda? why does it present it as if it were a bad thing?

secondly why are the germans screaming? trying to invoke absurd implications of germans? whoever wrote this article has very little knowledge of germany if what is implied is true. indeed how can such a writer comment on the suitability of the candidates with regards to foreign affairs.

why has the fact that alaska got two (sic.) borders with other countries make any difference? does that mean she has a special relationship with russia? to clarify, alaska is closer to bogota than moscow. furthermore last time i checked the bering straight stood between alaska and eastern siberia...as much of a border as cuba with the US or australia with papua new guinea.

dont mind objective criticism, but cretinous accusations devoid of fact dont deserve my or anyone elses time. get some academic credibility.

Palin thinks with her god and not with her head, I for one would not like the leader of my country putting her imaginary friend before making decisions. She is a Christian Fundamentalist at heart, she believes God has a plan and that all should follow that plan - she would not make a good President in the slightest.

Obama on the other hand has pledged, among other things, to increase science education in the US and he has backed Stem Cell research by saying that he wants to remove the ban when he gets into office. He is not thinking with his god, he is thinking with his brain. Obama may have his faults and I do not see the man as perfect, but I do see him as an effective president and good luck to him for it.

Its a pity I am English and cannot vote for him!

The Iraq invasion is "God's Plan"? Whatever you say governor. Yes she is a religious conservative nutjob, which is exactly why she was pushed on McCain.

The one criticism of Sam's article I have is the line "McCain has so little respect for the presidency of the United States that he is willing to put the girl next door (soon, too, to be a grandma) into office beside him."

What does it matter whether she is a grandmother or not? Her daughter's pregnancy has no relevance on her ability to be the VP. Not that I think she has any business being the VP, but bringing up this argument stinks of sexism to me.

It would be a disaster to have Sarah Palin as Vice President or President. Well, for you Americans at least. For Europe and Asia it's great news. how can you agree with flux?!

actually i would rather obama in charge, backed by biden, to present a more rationalist opposition to the supposed threat from iran.

to clarify, althought the iranian government is undoubtedly a threat to middle eastern stability, it isnt to the united states. its like the claims that "saddam could target europe". yeah right. on a fair day with a tailwind one of his missiles could have clipped cyprus. missiles that make the german V2 rockets seem like state of the art weaponry. far from a good thing agreed, but hardly the european apocalypse implied.

same applies to iran. clever diplomacy and softer counter-insurgency/terrorism/extremism, not conventional military hardware bobbing around in the persian golf is much more likely to solve the issues at hand. and obama is more likely to do that.

to use the cliche, attributed often to confucius: dont try and swot a fly with a cannon.

Now, now, let's not insult the retarded.

A great many of them are capable of following long lists of instructions, and memorizing complex manual tasks, and have often in my personal experience displayed themselves to be superior employees in the service industry than your typical moron asshole American teenager.

They are also often prone to bouts of astonishing insight, coupled with unfiltered honesty.

For example, I had a retarded aunt who died before I was born who had my grandmother pegged as a "hateful bitch", long before the so-called able-brained members of the family dared to say so.

I also thought about this and my conclusion was that Sam is taking her at her cardboard cut-out face value - ultra-conservative beauty queen/brood mare combo.

She is *marketed* as the ultra-feminine magic bullet, therefore referring to this - somewhat snidely - in the article is fair game I would say.

And anyway, five children and being a granma is nothing if you look at the early presidents:

Didn't she actually say "let's pray this is God's plan", as if it's something that's kind of uncertain?

So let me get this straight: Bush concocted this whole Iraq war thing by extrapolating some personal revelation, that might or might not be the direct will of God, and now we should pray that Bush's interpretation of this supposed message from God was correct?

This just fills me with confidence...

btw, Isn't it just remarkable how God's will just happens to coincide with Palin's political plans?

avatarListen Dawk Samkins, stay out of our politics, and leave our religion alone! The devil has impregnated Sarah Palin's daughter to test her faith. Is she going to have an abortion, no she is going to raise the child in the god fearing christian tradition that made this country great? And as for you heathens who dare to suggest that teaching children about contraception would have avoided this, do you seriously think the devil can be stopped by a few inches of rubber?

Sarah Palin is a wonderful example of American womanhood, she has nine children, holds down the job of janitor of the great state of Alaska and cooks her husband seven meals a day. And like all proud Alaskan's she and her entire family were baptised in gods gift to this wonderful state, American crude. She prays 24 times a day and attends services and prayer meetings at, the Exxon church of the latter day SUV.

And as for her candidature, if the good lord sees fit to let John McCain enter his kingdom before his term is up, Sarah Palin will be the best woman president we have ever had. Is her head full of book learning, of course not, we all know where that leads, yes I mean you Dawk Samkins, spewing your evil message across this wonderful country of ours corrupting our children's minds.

If Sarah Palin becomes president of the United States of America, she will rid the world of heathens, moslems, faggots, communists, environmentalist, and the United Nations so that we Americans can assert our god given right to kill each other with our legally held weapons. Hail to the chief!

avatarI was profoundly suspicious of Obama because of his inexperience and his apparently sincere religious convictions. Both McCain and Clinton seemed to me to be clearly superior, both in terms of qualifications and my suspicion that their religiosity was merely for public consumption. This is a time of real shooting war between the forces of the Enlightenment and the forces of religious idiocy - added to which, Russia suddenly seems to be keen to restart the Cold War. In that context, I want the leading nation of the civilized world to have some real foreign and/or defence policy heft in the White House (my preference was for a ticket of Hillary Clinton and Wesley Clark).

But then Obama showed himself to be very adept, at least in the dark arts of political campaigning. Then he chose a very experienced politician in Joe Biden as his VP. And then he gave a surprisingly and satisfying specific, non-vague acceptance speech - the first Obama speech since his 2004 convention speech that has actually impressed me.

And now McCain chooses this nutjob.

For a while there I wanted to want McCain to win - but he's just lost me.

Case closed. Obama-Biden 08!

..and speaking of God's will, isn't it pretty much a rhetorical difference if you say:

or,

"I am God, obey me!"

I guess the only difference is that the "I represent God"-meme is more effective in western societies.

avatarFlux, you're in the pocket of Big Moron.

Besides what amounts to about 11 years in elected offices, Obama has also been running his campaign organisation for the same amount of time as Palin has been governor of Alaska. This organisation employs hundreds if not thousands, has built a national movement of volunteers, raised over 300 million dollars of capital, and deftly out-competed the presumed nominee Hillary Clinton. So don't try and tell me Obama hasn't run anything, and run it extremely efficiently.
The campaigns mobilisation during the primaries and caucuses can only be described as hyper-competent.

Take a look at what Palin's actually done in those offices. Palin's executive "experience" left Wasilla in debt, and she is currently under investigation for abuse of power. Awesome work!

EDIT: Abiotic oil? Ohh gawd..
Even if there was more oil than we currently presume there to be.. it's not a good sol- oh..
According to the Atheist Conservative, AGW isn't real either! Delightful. Now we know the kind of nutjob we're dealing with.
