The Ten Days of Newton
Some years ago, the evolutionist and atheist Richard Dawkins pointed out to me that Sir Isaac Newton, the founder of modern physics and mathematics, and arguably the greatest scientist of all time, was born on Christmas Day, and that therefore Newton’s Birthday could be an alternative, if somewhat nerdy, excuse for a winter holiday.

One of Newtons inventions is missing! If you want to know what it is, and where to read about it, go to: http://www.samosbooks.org/astronomical_minds.html6. Comment #306328 by MelM on December 24, 2008 at 12:29 pm
I can't get excited about the winter solstice; why celebrate the start of several months of crappy weather? Newton's birthday however, is something I can relate to. And, I came across these Newton Christmas cards recently:7. Comment #306333 by amalthea on December 24, 2008 at 12:36 pm

On the other hand, we could do away with Chirstmas entirely and move all the nice parts to a beefed up New Years. Party New Year's Eve and open gifts on New Years Day; sounds good to me. The kids could have a ball while mommy and daddy sleep off a hangover. A good deal all around.11. Comment #306345 by beanson on December 24, 2008 at 1:04 pm

It's usual in the UK to retain the old calendar Julian date for events that happened before the introduction of the Gregorian calendar in 1752, so Newton was born on December 25, no argument about that. It's only if you want to transplant him to the North American Colonies that you'll run into problems.14. Comment #306353 by MelM on December 24, 2008 at 1:28 pm
Losing a day off work would be worth it although I'd support a 2 day New Years. As I think about this, I'm warming up to the idea. It would be relatively easy for atheist families to do and would get us out of making a big deal of the nutter holiday. We could keep some secular holiday music and Santa (without the outrageous lying to the kids).15. Comment #306364 by bluebird on December 24, 2008 at 2:24 pm

In the UK one of our mindless councils- I think it was Birmingham- wanted to rename it Winterval, all in the intrest of 'Multiculturalism'

Winterval is a portmanteau word coined by Mike Chubb[1] (former Head of Events at Birmingham City Council) to describe all festivities taking place around the end of the year (the winter in the Northern Hemisphere). It is a fusion of the words winter and festival and was intended to be an alternative description that encompasses the Neopagan (Winter solstice, Yule), Jewish (Hanukkah), Muslim (Ramadan and Eid; when they occur in that season), Hindu (Diwali) and secular holidays such as New Year's Day that take place during the last months of the year, rather than only encompassing the Christian festivals of Christmas, Advent and Boxing Day.

Good article. But what delights me most is Richard's name nicely plopped in the very first sentence. Like most on this site I'm naturally a fan. But the point I'm making is the persona of the fountainhead of a movement or school of thought has greater social impact than the pith of what he spearheads. Pele did something for soccer. Likewise Richard does something for reason. There are a lot of lay clever people out there who will now google and probe further and will consequently be energized. Olivia does us a great service. Thank you.28. Comment #306537 by AntonAAK on December 25, 2008 at 4:34 am

Do we need an excuse? Yule to our Anglosaxon and Norse forebears was a winter solstitial festival, celebrating the turning of the year. Up where I live close to 60 degrees N, where we have measly seven hours of daylight at this time, this seems reason enough.31. Comment #306545 by EraserGirl on December 25, 2008 at 6:25 am

I think that Chinese people like dogs. I will appear in Jerusalem. I am a hero. If you want to know what is "Armageddon", it is necessary to look at the following. I am Isaac Newton.42. Comment #320189 by 97pz7ag2x on January 15, 2009 at 12:24 am
The last time spam. I am Isaac Newton. I will appear in Jerusalem. According to "the Hebrew Bible", my date of birth can be calculated. I am a hero. I will tell you what is "Armageddon". I think that Chinese people like dogs. I will take the yellow people and the black people into concentration camps. When you see me, I will make you feel Speechless. I will take Barack Obama and Condoleezza Rice into concentration camps, I think that the black people and Latino like dogs.43. Comment #339044 by 97pz7ag2x on February 11, 2009 at 10:14 pm
I am Isaac Newton. The Third World War is already underway without me. So I am greater than Jesus?

Nice article, she seems to be a popular writer at the NY times. I did not know she knew Prof. Dawkins. Why did she reference that fraud Berlinski? I have a hard time believing that anything written by that con man is any good.
