Document Evangelical Scientists Refute Gravity With New 'Intelligent Falling' Theory

by The Onion

Thanks to Mark for the link to this classic Onion piece (It's a joke).

Reposted from:

KANSAS CITY, KS—As the debate over the teaching of evolution in public schools continues, a new controversy over the science curriculum arose Monday in this embattled Midwestern state. Scientists from the Evangelical Center For Faith-Based Reasoning are now asserting that the long-held "theory of gravity" is flawed, and they have responded to it with a new theory of Intelligent Falling.

img
Rev. Gabriel Burdett explains Intelligent Falling.

"Things fall not because they are acted upon by some gravitational force, but because a higher intelligence, 'God' if you will, is pushing them down," said Gabriel Burdett, who holds degrees in education, applied Scripture, and physics from Oral Roberts University.

Burdett added: "Gravity—which is taught to our children as a law—is founded on great gaps in understanding. The laws predict the mutual force between all bodies of mass, but they cannot explain that force. Isaac Newton himself said, 'I suspect that my theories may all depend upon a force for which philosophers have searched all of nature in vain.' Of course, he is alluding to a higher power."

Founded in 1987, the ECFR is the world's leading institution of evangelical physics, a branch of physics based on literal interpretation of the Bible.

According to the ECFR paper published simultaneously this week in the International Journal Of Science and the adolescent magazine God's Word For Teens!, there are many phenomena that cannot be explained by secular gravity alone, including such mysteries as how angels fly, how Jesus ascended into Heaven, and how Satan fell when cast out of Paradise.

The ECFR, in conjunction with the Christian Coalition and other Christian conservative action groups, is calling for public-school curriculums to give equal time to the Intelligent Falling theory. They insist they are not asking that the theory of gravity be banned from schools, but only that students be offered both sides of the issue "so they can make an informed decision."

"We just want the best possible education for Kansas' kids," Burdett said.

Proponents of Intelligent Falling assert that the different theories used by secular physicists to explain gravity are not internally consistent. Even critics of Intelligent Falling admit that Einstein's ideas about gravity are mathematically irreconcilable with quantum mechanics. This fact, Intelligent Falling proponents say, proves that gravity is a theory in crisis.

"Let's take a look at the evidence," said ECFR senior fellow Gregory Lunsden."In Matthew 15:14, Jesus says, 'And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.' He says nothing about some gravity making them fall—just that they will fall. Then, in Job 5:7, we read, 'But mankind is born to trouble, as surely as sparks fly upwards.' If gravity is pulling everything down, why do the sparks fly upwards with great surety? This clearly indicates that a conscious intelligence governs all falling."

Critics of Intelligent Falling point out that gravity is a provable law based on empirical observations of natural phenomena. Evangelical physicists, however, insist that there is no conflict between Newton's mathematics and Holy Scripture.

"Closed-minded gravitists cannot find a way to make Einstein's general relativity match up with the subatomic quantum world," said Dr. Ellen Carson, a leading Intelligent Falling expert known for her work with the Kansan Youth Ministry. "They've been trying to do it for the better part of a century now, and despite all their empirical observation and carefully compiled data, they still don't know how."

"Traditional scientists admit that they cannot explain how gravitation is supposed to work," Carson said. "What the gravity-agenda scientists need to realize is that 'gravity waves' and 'gravitons' are just secular words for 'God can do whatever He wants.'"

Some evangelical physicists propose that Intelligent Falling provides an elegant solution to the central problem of modern physics.

"Anti-falling physicists have been theorizing for decades about the 'electromagnetic force,' the 'weak nuclear force,' the 'strong nuclear force,' and so-called 'force of gravity,'" Burdett said. "And they tilt their findings toward trying to unite them into one force. But readers of the Bible have already known for millennia what this one, unified force is: His name is Jesus."

I am hardly suprised, this is typical of wild religious claims. They are all just weak theories attempting to explain a pseudoscience. I am sure that there are Christians that seriously believe that every scientific theory is really 'Intelligent'.

I cant believe the stupidity of theses people, espicially the ones wasting their life in attempt to explain it. So instead on working on fixing the accepted theory of gravity they just come up with one to explain "mysteries as how angels fly, how Jesus ascended into Heaven, and how Satan fell when cast out of Paradise". Then if god controls gravity why wont he let me fly then !!! God damn it !!

A brilliant piece of satire by "The Onion."
I swear, religious folks WOULD deny gravity if the Bible said it was actually God holding everything down, calling it "just a theory." Or others like Francis Collins would say gravity was the work of God.

Gravity is not mentioned in the bible for the same reason that electricity and Brazil are not mentioned in the bible.
The people who wrote it did not actually know enough to successfully pass it off as the Word of the Omnipotent One.
Just as well, really, or we'd all be wearing magnetic boots in case God changed his mind.

Christian "scientists" are about as convincing as Christian rockers. Stick to bible bashing and let the proper science work get on with its job. IDiots who want to teach kids creationism should be happy enough to do so in classes designated as religious studies, and parents should choose whether their kids should attend.

I recall having "scripture" classes in school (separate denominations and all that) and all I can recall about it is being totally BORED, but at least not as boring as church, where all I recall is looking at the clock and getting totally annoyed if the Father went over time. As a kid, who wants dull, backward, irrelevant teachings from boring old religious bastards when there was a whole REAL world to go out and explore?

Needless to say my "faith" has now lapsed. Thank God!

I think this is a great piece really.

Beautifully intelligently designed if you'll forgive my pun.

Gravity is accepted by almost everyone these days. No one honestly questions it as fact.

Yet all we really "know" about it is that there is a relationship between mass and gravity and...well it works every time we drop something.

Compared to Evolution, this really is a theory in crisis.

We do know the underlying cause of evolution. It's natural selection and survival of the fittest. Apart from saying "mass has gravity" we don't know what is the cause of it. It's just there. Can you imagine, if we stated that animals just evolved....just cause. If there were no explanation as to why? I doubt seriously it would have survived.

avatarWith the serious, non-parody, websites such as those mentioned in post 13 above (and many more could be added), and the volumes of inanities spewed forth in the media by those with creationist beliefs, I suggest that it is excusable that several people initially mistook the Onion's satire for the real thing.

Could one expect to distinguish this from parody?

I've read The Onion before, I know what it's about. I've even heard the Intelligent Falling joke before, in the context of the various creationism debates.

Nevertheless I read this article without seeing the opening lines. And I really thought that the joke was, in fact, coming true. It is really amazing that I could so easily attribute such an absurd parody to real people. But given the history of such thinking in the Bible Belt--this is an extremely believable article! So is the one posted by Spaceman Spiff (50). You could put either of these articles almost word-for-word in the NY Times with absolutely no trouble at all.

I must admit I am a little embarassed that some Freethinkers didnt spot that it was parody. However, the views of the fundiesare so astonishing almost anything is possible. Before I saw it was from the Onion, I wondered if it was a real parody movement created to ridicule the Creationists, which would be quite a good idea. I thought the equation was great too.

Now regarding the below, are THESE real or even more elaborate parodies??? If they are real, then the fundies have no right laughing at those who mistook the Onion piece, as they show that it really could have been real!

I used to love reading the Onion, but after several years of the Neocons, George Bush and their fundamentalist cronies pushing everyone into a new dark age, somehow The Onion and its satire just doesn't work anymore. The piece above is a great example of that. A few years ago, no one would have even begun to think that it could be serious, but the fact that some of us had to think twice when reading is not necessarily indicative of our dim wittedness (I include myself in this). It is a sign that in this day and age, it is possible that people may come up with this idea.

I think it was Tom Lehrer that said "Satire died when they awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to Henry Kissinger".

I know how he feels.
