avatarI prefer Mr. Deity to God, Inc.--much more clever writing. Yet again, Youtube did not allow me to comment or rate this series of excellent vids.

What I find interesting reading the youtube comments--youtube apparently does grant the rare favor of being allowed to actually post comments--regarding both God, Inc. and Mr. Deity vids, are that the supporters of religious superstitions like them, laugh at them, and think they are really funny and are not offended by them. Of course, there are some that are.

My favorite were the favor and the messages.
I couldn't stop laughing at those.
They were soooo right on!

avatarEpisode 2 shows how canny Jesus really is--he figured out that his interview for the fully god/fully human/one third partner gig was really a setup by God for the divine version of candid camera!!!

Logicel:..."supporters of religious superstitions like them, laugh at them, and think they are really funny and are not offended by them."

You're right, and this is a phenomenon I have always found odd. Many of my Christian friends have the capacity to laugh at even their most cherished core beliefs. It is almost as though at some level they are perfectly well aware of their absurdity. Has anyone researched this?

Uh, it's not that hard to post comments. You just have to have a username and password.
If you don't want to create a profile there's a wonderful site called bugmenot that can help you.

I was logged onto my youtube account when I tried to rate and post! Another poster here, Jared also has been unable to rate/comment consistently at youtube--sometimes we can, sometimes we can't.

avatarWeird. Sometimes their server seems to be really overloaded so maybe that's part of it.
Through Mr. Deity I also found another series called
"God inc."

It's more like The Office, and it's also quite funny.

I almost didnt bother with these as I usually dont find these kind of things funny but these were good. Interestingly, Mr Deity's disappointment at not getting souvenirs from Larry makes an interesting hint as to their relationship which might surprise the fundies....

Proof if any were needed that satire is a great art form. Since reason and logic make no impression on those with religion, perhaps mockery is the only way to go. There again, its effect is probably limited on those at whom it's aimed. I've never been paricularly struck by any of the jokes in the bible.

This comment is from Mr. Deity's own website:

Brian, what is your stand on Religion?
I am a formerly religious person (non-bitter), and as such, have great sympathies for the beliefs and feelings of religious people. I love the fact that they are concerned with the big issues like Good and Evil, Existence, Creation, etc... I don't always agree with the answers they provide to these questions, but I deeply respect their concern. Our goal here is not to mock religion, but to use it as a foundation for the humor. I'm thrilled that so many religious people have written to tell me that they love the episodes. In future episodes, I intend to turn the tables a bit and poke fun at what I call the "angry atheists" (of whom I am not fond). We'll see if they take it so well.

Mr. Deity is a hilarious send-up of the widespread, if cartoonish, understanding of Christianity. For a less cartoon-like view, one might start with Terry Eagleton's sharply critical review of "The God Delusion" (LRB v.28 n.20 dated 19 October 2006: http://www.lrb.co.uk/v28/n20/eagl01_.html ).

If you haven't already seen it, check out Jesus Christ Supercop. Search for it on youtube, or go to www.thebighonkin.com You won't regret it. It's a bit vulgar, so avoid it if you are easily offended.

 avatarRE: Comment #27367 by Graham

My guess is that Larry is the Holy spirit, and that his name is random (they don't give a lot of information about the holy spirit in the Bible, do they?). But I'm probably wrong.

Anycase... episode ( is my fav one so far! Except for the beginning of The Really Big Favor...

avatarNever understood the holy trinity thing until the pre-Superbowel press conference huddle in episode 6:

"The Deity, the Boy & Larry!"

Guess the Holy Ghost is the "gofer" which now makes a kind of sense.

Everyone should check out the unscripted interview Brian Keith Dalton has posted on his website:
http://www.mrdeity.com/interview.html

Very funny, plus Dalton explains why he started the series of shorts. Apparently he's working on a regular 30-minute series! That would be tremendous.

40. Comment #29038 by Logicel on April 1, 2007 at 9:35 am

avatarJSteven, thanks for the link. Wow, Dalton, is a formormon (former mormon). He is funny and it would be wonderful if he could get funding to do longer versions. It is an amazing accomplishment that so many religious people enjoy his stuff.

My favorite bit is that homosexuality was a clerical error, because Mr. Deity thought he was being asked for a list of people that will do WELL, and it was mistaken for people who would go to HELL--sort of like the comparative clerical biblical translation error of Mary being a virgin instead of just a young girl.
