Turkey – Creationism Documentary

The battle between creationism and evolution is a familiar debate in many North American classrooms. You may remember a documentary we aired earlier this year about "Biblically Correct" tours of museums in the United States where creationists take students through a museum of natural history to dispute Darwin's theory of evolution.

Today we have another story about this ongoing clash of ideas but from a country you might not expect. In Turkey, 700 academics have filed a case against the government to stem the increasing presence of creationism in science classes. Teachers and academics are concerned that a powerful creationist lobby is exerting more and more influence on the country's government.

And, this war between theology and science is creating some strange bed fellows as US Christian fundamentalists are joining forces with Muslim creationists in an effort to change the teachings in Turkey's classrooms. Freelance broadcaster Dorian Jones has prepared a documentary on what is becoming an increasingly bitter dispute over the mind of the country's children.

avatarEvolution discredited???? When, where and how???? Observable evidence of creation???? I have never seen nor have I ever heard of anyone seeing some living thing created out of dirt or from a rib. If I ever see that, I will change my stance. Also, if there was a god creating things from nothing but dirt and bones, why sex? So silly and so frightening are these people.

avatarEvolution isn't science? Man, those kind of people terrify me. I wish I could move to a different planet to get away from them.

avatarSupporters of religious superstitions are terrifying. Unfortunately, we non-theists cannot escape magically from their dangerous nonsense--we can only continue to combat their crapola with reason and logic. In addition, we need to organize much more effectively than we are now doing.

avatar..US Christian fundamentalists are joining forces with Muslim creationists..

Well, in Turkey, they call it creationism - and not ID (trying to make it look "Intelligent").

avatarActually Christian Fundies and Muslim Fundies are pretty similar in a lot of respects, mainly over the things that they hate. And they do a lot of hating.

For a canonical list of nutjobs just have a look at this. Man, what a rogues' gallery...

Jeeze Scottish geologist, they are scarey! And what exactly is their problem with homosexuality anyway? Like, seriously haven't these people got anything better to worry about?

Thanks scottishgeologist for documenting what a bad job the alleged creator must have done.

Great (and frightening) link, sottishgeologist. Here's another one that goes into more detail about the Christian right's 'cult of masculinity':

"And what exactly is their problem with homosexuality anyway?"
As usual, they're dying to try it or they're already at it and about to be caught. Forgive me for being blunt, but doesn't the pillar of Christianity appear to be terror of women and insatiable curiosity about other men? Apart from pure hatred of democracy and intelligence, nothing else dominates their diatribe more. Protesting too much?

avatarWill someone please tell the fundies to stop using technology and science in a vain attempt to discredit science and technology.

avatarThanks scottishgeologist for documenting this rogues' gallery, if religion was not used as a qualifier the men in white suits would be called double quick. Fortunately a few are no longer able to do any damage, we need to keep a close watch on the rest. They all must have failed American History according to their comments.
