I use the Simpsons as a yardstick. Every time I meet someone new, I ask if they like the Simpsons, if they say "no" I don't ask anything else.

If I had to cut a character, I would ditch "Krusty", but the rest are indispensible!

avatarYorker, I'm kind of with you, but I first find out whether they've given it a chance, because I didn't at first. For several years I couldn't get past the way they were drawn. Then my cultural tastes broadened a little and I began to watch - instant hit with me.

Of course, now I don't have a TV, and this is one show I do miss a little :(

Yorker, no, Krusty's great!

Favourite quote (from memory); "Jimi Hendrix said he plotzed on it. His actual words."

Not being Jewish/Yiddish/New Yorker/American I don't know what the word means, or even if I've got the right word. But I laughed really loud at the thought of a Jewish Jimi.

avatarOf course, this is the version of evolution the creationists mock (and it leaves out natural selection). Maybe if the original Homerunculus had diversified into Homeresque plants, Homersauruses, etc as well as the true Homer....

But it's very funny in its own right.

(The music is familiar: what is it?)

Yay, The Simpsons!

Wish it had been Rev. Lovejoy or Ned instead of Moe.

That would have been pretty evil >:D

I also love Lisa's aspirations towards a world based on logic. Why do we have a 24-hour day? Who says a week has 7 days?

But you must admit, South Park, Family Guy and American Dad are better.

avatarThe last two series of South Park have been very dissapointing and Family Guy has sucked since they brought it back, at least the Simpsons only started to suck around series 10.

Before good artificial lighting, day and night were far more distinct, so instead of thinking about a 24-hour day, they thought about a 12-hour day and a 12-hour night, and 12 is that smallest number that can be divided into both quarters and thirds (though their hours would grow longer and shorter with the seasons - not so much towards the equator).

I think the 7-day week has to do with some mystical/numerological power they gave the number seven. Or maybe it was the smallest number they could economically afford a day off. I'm pretty sure the story about God resting was back-formed from that.

Hi Shuggy.

You should try living in Shetland. We'll have 24-hour daylight in about 6 weeks' time.

There's a creationist joke in there somewhere but I can't think of it at this time of night.

You know I love the first 7-8 seasons (give or take) of Simpsons, but the last several years (more like 6 or 7) have been hit and miss at times, not to say they aren't good, but they have to seem to have lost there bite. Maybe because they are a show that has been on so long that it is hard to explore new plot lines. Maybe it is because family guy, south park and the shows on adult swim (Go team Venture!) has made them seem tame.

I don't think The Simpsons compare to Family Guy, if only because they are vastly different. To me, Family Guy is better, but maybe not for others. The Simpsons tries to be too preachy and please everybody, and only a few jokes are really good.

The Evolution clip of Family Guy was better, and more to the point:

Family Guy, in contrast, tries to be as absurd as possible, and I love that, and that's what it's critics complain about, that there's no "plot". Screw plot, give us more stuff like this:

avatarThe thing about The Simpsons as well was that one episode they ran when Lisa found the "Angel" Skeleton, remember that? Oddly enough that episode had some rather low-key "faith is a good thing" undertones to it, upon recollection.

avatarBut dude, that episode was awesome.
It guest starred Stephen Jay Gould!

I'll restrain from trying to recall all the neat points and themes in there, but Lisa's skepticism was ultimately the big one, along with the general absurdity of the towns feverish belief in the angel, which was then easily converted to feverish consumer lust. :P
It was thematically pretty similar to the 'miracle' of Maude's statue at Praiseland.

avatarI wonder what it is with that Simpson cartoon. I frequently find myself rather choose watching an old episode that I have seen several times before over the news or some other "important" informative program.

What are you guys talking about? That Simpson's intro didn't have the slightest thing to do with actual evolution. This is the sort of mischaracterization of evolution I would expect to see from creationists, not from the Simpsons or Richard Dawkins. (And I second Shuggy's comment above.) Misinformation like that is a big part of why the general public in the US has trouble understanding evolution as a process - the majority of the time evolution is referred to in popular TV shows, the context is actually of some sort of impossible metamorphosis having nothing at all to do with actual evolution.

At least it is not as bad as the citing of "evolution" to explain the superpowers of the characters on the show heroes. Can't the writers of such shows find a better way to frame their stories without maligning science in the process?

Well, I love other aspects of both the Simpsons and Heroes enough to forgive them on this. But it still annoys me.

I think the 7 day week is probably a quarter of a lunar month. It would also be one of the moon's distinct phases. New moon to half-moon, half to full, full back to waning half and then back to new moon again.

Our weeks do have to do with the lunar cycle. Also the days are named after the seven "heavenly" bodies known before telescopes. Monday=moon, Tuesday(Martes)=Mars, Wednesday(Miercoles)=Mercury, Thursday(Jueves)=Jupiter, Friday(Viernes)=Venus, Saturday=Saturn, and Sunday=Sun.

"Also the days are named after the seven "heavenly" bodies known before telescopes."

In english most of them are named after Norse Gods. Tiu's day, Woden's day, Thor's day, Frig's day.
