avatarThis is short and very interesting. I can relate to wanting to look at women. It really does get my heart pounding when I see a woman whom I think is hot!!!! But thankfully for me my frontal lobe works well, and I am able to reason my way into not making a fool of my self!! Uhhhh!!

avatarHer T-shirt thing reminded me of a more interesting TV experiment broadcast here in the UK.

Three women were asked to select the most desirable partner from a group of three men, they had to judge on looks alone. One guy was a handsome film-star type, one was just an average guy and the third was sadly, plug-ugly.

Of course, the handsome guy won; now comes the interesting part. The guys were each given a T-shirt to wear for 24 hours out of sight of the women. Next day the women were given the shirts and asked to select the most desirable by smell alone, they didn't know which shirt was worn by which man. All the women chose the same shirt - it was the one the ugly guy had worn.

You're evidently a young guy, tell me, what did you think of Helen, the lady in the video, was she "hot"? I'm not being facetious, I have a reason for asking.

 avatarYorker,

I'm 62, male, hetero.

No, I did not find the good doctor pretty, sexy or "hot". However, I found her charming and attractive.

Now, Gwen Stefani! She's HOT.

I am not that young, 36. I was just being anonymously honest. Why do you ask?

Compared to me you are a young guy, I'm 63 and you didn't tell me what you thought of her. It's just that my perception of women has changed as I age and I wanted to see if young guys today feel as I did. I'm like RickM, I think Helen is attractive but "hotness" doesn't play a big part for me now, as a young man I liked all kinds of women but the older I got the more emphasis I placed on intelligence. Nowadays, I much prefer intelligent women to "pretty" women -- they're ten-a-penny, but "beautiful" women in the fullest sense of the word, are a much rarer and valuable breed.

I'm 16 and I've felt that way for as long as I can remember. I don't use the word "hot" to describe women because I don't really look for hotness. A beautiful girl, in every sense of the word as you said, is what I look for. Usually eyes play a big part in it for me, along with whether or not the girl is smart and can carry on a conversation.

avatarDamg, I selected no rank and submitted. I wanted to select excellent! I enjoyed this interview and will check out the NYT for more science presentations in the future. Could the NYT finally be waking up to the digital world?

Yorker, I don't know if I am becoming a dirty old lady or what, but I found watching Corcoran and Fisher interacting in this interview very sexy--2 attractive and intelligent people discussing sex is quite a frisson. I am convinced Corcoran wanted to jump Fisher's bones.

Anyone have any thoughts about the "different immune system" she mentions when referring to the sweaty t-shirt experiment?

 avatarYorker et all,
I am 28 and I actually found Dr Fisher quite attractive in the sense that I liked her voice and her directness but I dont find her looks that attractive, possibly given enough ale that might change hehehehe!

I think women have changed as I have got older, obviously 10 years ago I definitely had a different approach than how I do now. I heartily agree with Yorker, there many "pretty" women in this world, but the real catches are the "beautiful" ones!

I don't know about "a dirty old lady", perhaps your sexual awareness has always been high and you haven't lost it, nothing wrong with that!

I think you're right about Corcoran fancying Fisher but I saw no reciprocating indication from her.

That's a remarkably mature attitude for a young lad your age James, I commend you on it. When I was your age I would have done a fur coat...come to think of it, I'm sure I did!

12. Comment #31111 by Philip1978

Well Philip, at 28 I'd been married (the first time) for 4 years and was realising I'd got married for the wrong reason and felt about women as you do now.

I'd still probably do a fur coat if I was drunk enough (yes, it's illegal, I know). But when I have my senses about me I like beautiful women.

Of course, this makes finding someone who is beautiful and also attracted to me very hard, lol. It's not like people use the word "beautiful" very often to describe women - it's more of a special word.

The "different immune system" sounds very interesting - anyone care to expand?

One thing that puzzles me about homosexuality is the suggestion by the good doctor here which I've read elsewhere that hormones can influence the production of an "effeminate" homosexual man which I accept but that doesn't explain to me the more "butch" kind of gay man who then is attracted to the former. I think the same argument could be raised for women - I can see the pendulum swing towards maleness which would mean women who want feminine partners but I don't see how that produces the feminine gays who don't want men.

Anyone know any thinking on this?

I just kept looking at the eye-flirting going on. That guy was totally up for it, but she just wanted to flirt for a bit, so funny.
Oh and BTW, where can I get an attractive immune system, preferably bottled?

I agree 100%. However, when I see a realy fine looking woman my heart starts to pound. Its true, and even still at 36. But if I am having a stimualting conversation, say with a women who is an Atheist, I don't think my heart would be race quite as fast as if I were talking to, "Gezelle."
I find Helen interesting, that would be it.

avatarWasn't it John Keats the English poet who said "Beauty is truth, truth beauty, that is all ye know on earth and all ye ever need to". Its meaning, without too much essay writing, means that whatever you find to be beautiful in life is your own unique truth.I guess with time this has become more apparent for me...could be why I am still single too hehehehehhe!
