Document George Scales, War Hero and Generous Friend of RDFRS

George Scales, War Hero and Generous Friend of RDFRS

George Scales

George Scales, a gallant former naval officer and highly successful farmer and businessman, has become, in his mid eighties, one of RDFRS's most generous benefactors. He has no urge towards self-glorification and would be content for his generosity to be quietly appreciated rather than ostentatiously publicized. I have of course expressed my gratitude to him privately. The opportunity to do so publicly, and in a way I am assured by one of his closest friends he would not mind, arises because he has unfortunately fallen into ill-health. His eyesight has deteriorated so that he can hardly see, and his back is collapsing so that he can hardly walk. He is going to have an operation, but before they could do that to an 86-year-old man they had to fit a heart pacemaker. This has just been done, and George is now awaiting the operation, and badly in need of cheering up.

To give something of the flavour of this remarkable man, the following note has been kindly supplied at my request by Ian Baird, a close friend of George and the author of his biography.

"After a disastrous school career, George joined the navy as a rating, and was soon captain of a ship which took part in the Normandy Landings in June 1944. On one of his trips when he was taking tons of ammunition to the beaches, the unloading squad of forklift vehicles failed to arrive, so George and his crew ran the stuff down onto the beach by hand. It took nine hours and was carried out under constant German strafing for the last four hours of the run; had anything hit the growing pile of ammunition, they would all have gone up. For this action, he was awarded the Croix de Guerre (with silver star) by the French Government, an award which was delayed - by sixty-three years, finally arriving on December 6 last year. Since the war, he has been a farmer, although he prefers to think of himself as a businessman whose business happens to be farming. In the mid 1990s he moved into thatching-straw, where he now commands a major share of the market in the East of England, and where the change has enabled him to remain very profitable at a time when 'standard' farms are finding it much harder to do well. He has been a regular correspondent in the letters columns of The Times and of several farming journals. He is a man of strong principles, and one of the strongest is his belief that while religion holds sway, much goes wrong – hence his enthusiastic support for RDFRS."

Above is a picture of George being presented with the Croix de Guerre by the French Naval Attaché, 63 years after the award was announced. The fact that he didn't bother to put on a suit for the occasion is endearingly typical. In all sorts of ways, George Scales is a one-off. He gives a whole new meaning to phrases like 'Stands no nonsense from anybody' and 'Bulldog courage'. Where others stand and wait, George charges in with direct action – a direct action that is always fully in the spirit of the law even if it remains only just inside the letter. I have never met anybody quite like him. I am proud to be associated with this indomitable old fighter.

I thought his operation might provide an opportunity for some of our readers who have the welfare of RDFRS at heart to send him some such brief message as "Get well soon George and thanks for your generosity to the cause of reason, secularism and science." George doesn't do e-mail, and rather than publicise his home address (which I'm sure he would hate) I thought the sensible thing would be to invite people to write in to this thread. Later, I'll print out the whole thread and send it to him.

Richard

avatarBefore this gets out of hand. According to this obituary in the Guardian George died in 2007.

Unless there are two George Scales with very similar life stories.

I sincerely hope and pray that your operation will be a success. Although I do not support hateful speech being directed at any people group, whether it be Christian or Atheist, Christ teaches that we love and pray for those who speak ill of us, quite unlike what the world teaches. I also understand that this must be a difficult time for your family, so know that our thoughts (and my prayers) are with them. Get well soon.

avatarI have flagged 2 posts above to admin, The man referred to in the post, another war hero btw, sadly died before George's Qroix de guerre arrived in the photo, so no need to refer to the post in question.

__I am also flagging this for removal from here.

avatarI don't believe in god - there is no good reason to do so.

But I do believe in man, and if ever good reason were furnished for that, I think we need look no further.

avatarI don't know if I was correct to flag Bizarro's post or not - it may be genuinely heartfelt, especially as I didn't notice on first look that he's signed it, but with mentioning prayers 3 times, and saying some stuff about christs teachings as well I have my doubts!

I don't know why Cartomancer's post got flagged (not by me) It seems to be a really good message.

Wouldn't it be comforting to know that the thoughts of even those whom you may consider your enemies were with you in hard times? I know that if I were in Mr. Scales position I would welcome encouragement from anyone who desired to express it, whether they be atheist or not. I find it profoundly disrespectful to not allow Mr. Scales to read a respectfully written letter of encouragement. Although I may oppose what he stands for, I don't believe that I should be denied the right to express my feelings towards Mr. Scales, especially considering the manner in which I did so. If you think he can't handle a word of encouragement from a Christian, then that is just insulting.

While I cannot convince anyone that my motives are pure, I would ask you all to remember that not all Christians make hypocrisy and deceitfulness a way of life, although some certainly do. While I may fail from time to time, I try my best to live up to the standards that Christ set. I therefore request that the moderator reconsider their decision to remove my comment from the main thread. That's fine if you don't, but instead of considering your own distrust of Christians, however experientially justified it may be, consider what would be in the best interest of Mr. Scales.

avatar^Bizarro, I agree that George would appreciate messages from the 'other side of the trenches' (so to speak) and I daresay being in your prayers is ok to say in that 'tongue in cheek' manner, but the way I read your post it appears you want to raise some general point about the site supporting "hateful speech" - do you really think that's appropriate?

I'm not a skilled communicator so I hope you don't take my request the wrong way, or preaching at you, or condescending/self-righteous/whatever!!

I welcome you re-draughting a post in the main thread, I certainly do not intend to sensor you.

This is also the first time I've ever flagged any posts, & hopefully last, and my priority was to flag the one further up about the Obit, as some posts that have now gone were referring to it, though George might have been quite amused by the echoing of that famous quote about "reports of my demise have been greatly exaggerated!"

"but the way I read your post it appears you want to raise some general point about the site supporting "hateful speech" - do you really think that's appropriate?"

No, I don't. However, that was not the intended purpose of that statement. I wrote that statement only as a way to express that although I may oppose the militant atheist movement, I still share the common human identity that bonds everyone together despite race or creed. I believe that in the spirit of this common bond, sympathy and encouragement should not be extended only to those who believe as I do. This is exactly what Jesus taught.

I have never had sex... It is a simple matter of self-control.

Should this not be the 'alternative' thread as distinct from the 'alternate'?

In any case - Bizarro. Two of your comments stand above. I see a connection between them. The connection is Robin Williams. I borrow and re-phrase:

'Bizarro is in more dire need of a blowjob than any man in history.'

Get yourself sorted, man. And wake up to the glory of the universe, and to the manmade nature of your deity of the week. Faith should thereafter become an embarrassing memory for you.

Post-blowjob, of course.

Think on, lad.

Best,
Styrer

Re: various comments in this thread
Bizzaro: I don't know if you'll see this post here in the 'Alternate Comment Thread', but I want to say something to you about this thread.

Your original post (Comment #111423), signed personally, and especially your revised post (Comment #112248), and your willingness to revise it, show you as a man of good character.

Regardless of what other people may think or say (and I have seen you cop a lot of flak here), no matter your religious persuasion, you have shown sense and wisdom in the various follow-on posts here.

I have found this short discourse between you and Enlightenme.. to be refreshingly civil.

Thanks for the sentiment. A kind word is always appreciated. I understand of course that when I post on sites like these I can expect plenty of not so pleasant rhetoric, but I take the good with the bad. I mainly post on this site with the purpose in mind to expose people's minds to ideas that they may not have considered, but there's so much to be learned through civil discourse as well. I've learned more through just discussing topics on this site with atheists than I have in any class I've ever taken. So understand that when I encounter those who are truly interested in having a normal discussion, minus the personal attacks and prejudices, it is always much appreciated.
