I found the most striking one the "uninterested scientist" one. It actually seems to have taken him some 60 years to wake up.

avatarSpeaking of cartoons... did anyone see this?

Artist Lars Vilks has made three drawings ridiculing the prophet Mohammed. The prophet is portrayed as a "roundabout dog".
So far three art exhibitions have declined to publish his pictures. The Art Association in Tällerud said no. Then the school Gerlesborgsskolan in the county of Bohuslän said no. Now the Museum of Modern Art in Stockholm has also said no.

avatarI want it for my avatar!

Once again, special (I *would* say "kid-glove", but are goats OK?) treatment for muslims. Based on respect, of course.

Is that the Bishop of Carlisle in the cartoon?

I didn't get this one: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/sts/cain/projects/ejn/ejn_comics/images/comic-ejn_n21.jpg

Is there something hidden in the picture, or what?

 avatar#5, hcholm

Well, if you squint real hard, it looks like a smiling monkey, sitting in a tree.
oh wait..

I can't see anything editorial/funny either. Maybe it's some ancient biologist joke. :P

avatarThe one with the ostriches and the Fundamentalist rustlers is just brilliant.

It would be great to work without worrying about opposition, but a large part of science is paying attention to opposition - reasoned arguments from colleagues in the field, AND "alternatively-informed" views from outside the field.

Pehraps the mysterious monkey/ape just shows what was on the minds of cartoonists of the era.

I wish we saw more such cartoons today.

But I guess we have become too polite to lampoon other people's "sacred beliefs".

avatarLove the cartoons. We need more satire of the sacred in my opinion. Perhaps if people could see the silliness of their beliefs in a cartoon, they would start to be more embarrassed of what they are actually believing.

 avatarFascinating slice of Americana...

The Flying Trilobite, thanks for that link; looks intriguing... the R.D. tid-bit was a surprise.

We enjoyed these cartoons; thanks RDF:)

Here is one of the drawings: http://jp.dk/udland/europa/article1068158.ece

Not much of a cartoon.

avatarThanks Bluebird. The work proceeds slowly this summer, but I don't have too far to go to finish the Richard Dawkins painting.

Lovely avatar. Please forgive me if I am incorrect, but is that the little mermaid in Denmark?

avatarThe Flying Trilobite, yes, it is!:)

*********************

The recent Kansas school evolution brou-ha-ha produced a few cartoons along the same vein as these; they're almost as good:)
