"There are would-be murderers, all around the world who want to kill you and me, and themselves, because they are motivated by what they think is the highest ideal..." - Richard Dawkins

Root of All Evil? The Original Program 2-DVD Set
A beautiful new digital transfer from the master, with new artwork and special features.

In this two-part documentary, Oxford Professor Richard Dawkins examines how religious faith is gaining ground in the face of rational, scientific truth. The program takes you to some of the world's religious hot-spots, both in America and the Middle East. Dawkins meets with religious leaders and their followers, as well as scientists and skeptics to examine the power of religion. Interviews with former Pastor Ted Haggard, the novelist Ian McEwan, the former Bishop of Oxford, and others offer valuable insights into the global impact and consequences of faith in the 21st century.

Along with his million-copy bestseller The God Delusion, Richard Dawkins' Root of All Evil? has helped inspire people of reason worldwide to say "Enough is enough!" Our modern world is the product of a long march from ignorance and fear to the Enlightement and beyond, always guided by the power of science and reason. To now abandon our endeavour toward progress and knowledge for faith and superstition puts humanity in peril.

I'm interested in ordering, since I haven't been able to bring myself to set in front of the computer watching the low-qualities copies floating on the internet. I am curious though if the money goes to a good cause, like the R.D. Foundation, or running this website. Just curious I guess.

 avatarrthille:

I've been curious as well. I certainly think that RD deserves to make money on his work. In fact, I hope that he retains the majority of the money made on his books and DVD's. T-shirts, pins, and stickers are another matter. I would think that these types of merchandising are supporting the RDF, along with donations. Someone please verify that there is no payment to the Ted Haggard Escort Fund for his appearance on this DVD.

 avatarrthille,
All proceeds (minus royalties to IWC, who own the program) go to The Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science. I've added it to the top article as well. I'm pretty sure no money ever gets to Haggard's pockets! It certainly doesn't get there from us.

Josh, excellent news. I decided that I trusted the morals of Richard Dawkins and went ahead and ordered the DVDs (both the original program and the unedited interviews, along with some 'A' buttons) without waiting for a reply. Athiests seems to have much stronger morals than believers. My wife did Credit & Collections for 15 years and she seemed to think that the biggest sheisters were the Christians. Of course, she thinks I need to stop reading all the stuff I'm reading (just finishing "Why I Am Not A Muslim") because I'm becoming 'deranged'. Of course, watching the clip from The View today didn't help :-)

Has the pope decided to "beatify" Richard?
Yes we all make spelling mistakes.. me certainly included. Two of the best documentary programmes ever shown on British TV.

avatarI'm delighted to see that this excellent polemical documentary has been made available on DVD. Although I did see the programmes when first broadcast, I did not think to set the VCR. Sometime after broadcast it became clear that I would have opportunity to teach advanced level religious studies and these programmes will be an excellent teaching resource. I can't wait to see the, doubtless, strong reactions from my students. Nice to note that the profits are going to the R. D. Foundation.

avatarI ordered this and the interviews DVD (and a lapel pin - wouldn't be seen dead in the t-shirt :) ).

Must admit I do resent having to ship this stuff over from the States (and paying overseas postage charges), but maybe I'm just being proprietary about a British national treasure :) I also resent the DVDs only being available in the lesser quality NTSC, but what can you do?

Hopefully those will be waiting for me to watch when I get back from my vacation.

 avatarnotsobad,
The DVD is for all regions, so it is not restricted at all in that way. The only limiting factor is if your DVD player is PAL-only. Most newer PAL DVD players are also capable of playing NTSC DVDs. All computers with DVD players can handle both NTSC and PAL. The reason we do NTSC is because most (about 75%) of our website visitors are from the US (which is NTSC only), and our office is in Los Angeles. At this point in time it doesn't really make sense for us to create both a PAL and NTSC version of each DVD we make, but perhaps as we grow it can become feasible. I hope some of this helps.
