KINSHASA (Reuters) - Police in Congo have arrested 13 suspected sorcerers accused of using black magic to steal or shrink men's penises after a wave of panic and attempted lynchings triggered by the alleged witchcraft.

Reports of so-called penis snatching are not uncommon in West Africa, where belief in traditional religions and witchcraft remains widespread, and where ritual killings to obtain blood or body parts still occur.

Rumours of penis theft began circulating last week in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo's sprawling capital of some 8 million inhabitants. They quickly dominated radio call-in shows, with listeners advised to beware of fellow passengers in communal taxis wearing gold rings.

Purported victims, 14 of whom were also detained by police, claimed that sorcerers simply touched them to make their genitals shrink or disappear, in what some residents said was an attempt to extort cash with the promise of a cure.

"You just have to be accused of that, and people come after you. We've had a number of attempted lynchings. ... You see them covered in marks after being beaten," Kinshasa's police chief, Jean-Dieudonne Oleko, told Reuters on Tuesday.

Police arrested the accused sorcerers and their victims in an effort to avoid the sort of bloodshed seen in Ghana a decade ago, when 12 suspected penis snatchers were beaten to death by angry mobs. The 27 men have since been released.

"I'm tempted to say it's one huge joke," Oleko said.

"But when you try to tell the victims that their penises are still there, they tell you that it's become tiny or that they've become impotent. To that I tell them, 'How do you know if you haven't gone home and tried it'," he said.

Some Kinshasa residents accuse a separatist sect from nearby Bas-Congo province of being behind the witchcraft in revenge for a recent government crackdown on its members.

"It's real. Just yesterday here, there was a man who was a victim. We saw. What was left was tiny," said 29-year-old Alain Kalala, who sells phone credits near a Kinshasa police station.

This sounds like something straight out of a cultural anthropology textbook or an egyptian magical papyrus. How intellectually backwards can these poor benighted people be?

Still, penis theft does sound a rather amusing idea. I wonder what it is that the Congolese sorcerers need all those penises for? Maybe I'm in the wrong magical profession - all I get to play with are these boring old tarot cards...

This sort of thing disgusts and depresses me. What scares me about it is that it is a massive argument in favour of active cultural imperialism: the imposition of cultural change by those who "know better" -- in this case, the scare quotes can come off! But how is education not exactly that? What other cure to this stupidity is there?

As it happens,

They used to think this happened in Europe too. I first read it in a novel,and thought it made up, but found it is in the Papal Malleus Maleficarum -"Hammer against Witches". It was thought the stolen penis could be kept alive by feeding it corn.

Folks might remember something a few years ago called the "Toronto Blessing" - a service that spread elsewhere briefly, including the UK. Adherents thought that their fillings were being turned into gold - some even thought the transformation confirmed by medical records (they werent) others explained the lack of confirmation by the fillings turning back.

The human capacity to consume bullshit is truly staggering.Makes you wonder how the hell we ever survived let alone prospered. Homo Sapiens my ass!

Now, for some logic: These idiots accuse others of being mighty "sorcerers", yet they then go out and chase down these "sorcerers" with the intent of beating them up. You would think that they would hesitate to do something like that if they really believed this shit. Surely, if a "sorcerer" can steal your penis he can do much worse as well.

So is it an excuse, or are they just that stupid?

More seriously, when I lived in Africa I had a very long talk with my two friends Mack and Mavuto, natives, about the witch that fell out of the sky naked and cursed the village. Without being too mean, I tried to explain to them why this clearly had not happened. When they claimed to be eyewitnesses, I asked them for a description of the witch and the night in question. They, of course, had no details. My mission there was to convince them that condoms would stop them from getting AIDS (Mack and Mavuto were engaged in this effort as well), and this was almost impossible, as their religious folk had told them condoms would make them impotent, or, indeed, their penises would fall off. I got nowhere by trying to explain the AIDS virus to people who have never been told what blood or cells are. These folks, my adopted people, were not stupid. They were simply uneducated, and had been duped by only slightly smarter priests, of both the Catholic and native variety. I don't know which is worse. It seems that in that country, maybe converting to Christianity was a step up, because at least the Christian Africans thought rape and murder were bad things to do, unlike most others.

Probably all psychology. A while back I saw this report about some research that showed while the "penis enlargement" techniques are ineffective, they have the psychological effect of making the guy feel more confident and also the feeling of penis being larger (combined with the fact that they were getting a better erection). So, if something like that can do a positive impression, the belief in nonsense witchcraft can probably do the opposite.

Bluff_King_hal is correct - I did a little studying of the Malleus Maleficarum at Uni. One story included a witch who stole men's penises and hid them in a bird's nest - which of course several 'eyewitnesses' confirmed, sending the poor woman to her doom.... I suspect this was just the perfect excuse to get rid of someone you didn't like, or who wouldn't sleep with you. Just make up some weird and wonderful story, tell the local mad monk or cleric, then sit back and watch the show. Ahhh you couldn't make this stuff up. This story is definite evidence that medieval is the right word to describe some parts of the world.

My guess is that there is a more mundane cause - human vulnerability, pettiness, or vanity. A man finds he can no longer function the way he used to, and with his manhood threatened/in question, and without a way to understand why it happened, he attributes it to witchcraft. I bet claims of shrinkage or disappearance would actually more likely be a case of impotence. The belief becomes known, and a curse of shrinkage or disappearance becomes an acceptable means for some of enacting revenge. Someone worried about being cursed worries himself to the point of self-imposed impotence, and the otherwise impotent now have something to blame. The person worried into a state of impotence, even though he may suspect his own worry to be the cause, now has a ready made excuse that exempts himself as the cause. In any case, the afflicted man may not have the knowledge to attribute it to anything else, or to exclude the likelihood of witchcraft as being the cause. Some of the reward/punishment aspects of religious belief may work in a similar way.
