"Answering the New Atheism: Dismantling Dawkins' Case Against God" by Scott Hahn and Benjamin Wiker

Answering new atheism

The essential book for dismantling Richard Dawkins' atheistic agenda. Scott Hahn and Benjamin Wiker collaborate to debunk Dawkins' theories and show how inconsistent and illogical his conclusions truly are. This is the definitive book for college students or faithful Christians hoping to answer Dawkins' claims and assert the logic and beauty of their faith.

Is God A Delusion?

Nicky Gumbel, the vicar of Holy Trinity Brompton and the man who heads up the Alpha ministry, takes a look at yet another question which seems to be exercising many people in his latest book, Is God A Delusion?

Gumbel uses his legal training to address issues such as "Has Science Disproved God?" and whether faith is 'irrational'. He has written the book as a result of attending a meeting at which Richard Dawkins, A C Grayling and Christopher Hitchens spoke in favour of a proposition that 'We'd be better off without religion'. Nicky Gumbel says, "There was clearly a huge interest in these issues, so I began to read their books and some of the responses."

This is a short book and so does not delve too deeply into all aspects, but Nicky Gumbel sets out the evidence clearly and allows the reader to draw their own conclusions.

The book also includes A Theologian's Perspective written by Dr Graham Tomlin, head of St. Paul's Theological Centre, as a response to Dawkins from a theologian's viewpoint, which adds to the material already available.

Religions are reeling from the ferocious assault by Richard Dawkins in his book The God Delusion. But what has led to such a high profile attack? How does Judaism fare? Are the criticisms justified? How do Jews who take their faith seriously yet also value intelligent debate respond to the accusations that Dawkins hurls at them?

Twelve leading Reform personalities have risen to the Dawkins challenge. They offer a robust defence of the many good features that faith offers without flinching from the unacceptable aspects. They will probably not convert Dawkins, but they may well stop him converting others. (thanks to Old Sarum)

Atheism Remix: A Christian Confronts the New Atheists

A leading Christian intellectual explores the newest strain of atheism, its foremost thinkers, the cultural conditions that have bred it, and how Christians should respond.

Something has changed in American culture. What for years was a little-regarded belief system—atheism—has now gained a large, and increasing, national hearing through the writings of "new atheists" such as Dawkins, Dennett, Harris, and Hitchens.

Wanting to both inform and equip serious-minded Christians regarding this cultural shift, R. Albert Mohler Jr. explores the environment that has bred the "new atheism" while also introducing readers to the movement's four leading thinkers and the contours of their arguments. Mohler—deemed "the reigning intellectual of the evangelical movement in the US" by Time magazine—then uses this foundation to pinpoint eight major distinctives that make the new atheism new, and to discuss the future of Christianity in relationship to it.

At school and in the community, Christians are sure to encounter people who have been shaped by this strain of atheism. Here is keen insight that any believer can use to understand and challenge the new atheists.

Why There Almost Certainly Is a God: Doubting Dawkins by Keith Ward
keith ward flea

Synopsis
Richard Dawkins recently claimed that 'no theologian has ever produced a satisfactory response to his arguments'. Well-known broadcaster and author Keith Ward is one of Britain's foremost philosopher-theologians. This is his response. Ward welcomes all comers into philosophy's world of clear definitions, sharp arguments, and diverse conclusions. But when Dawkins enters this world, his passion tends to get the better of him, and he descends into stereotyping, pastiche, and mockery. In this stimulating and thought-provoking philosophical challenge, Ward demonstrates not only how Dawkins' arguments are flawed, but that a perfectly rational case can be made that there, almost certainly, is a God.

Richard Dawkins' book is systematically refuted. Dawkins' arguments are analysed, and invariably found wanting. However the confutation is charitable in tone, and sometimes allows that Dawkins may have a constructive point. A must read for anyone who has read "The God Delusion".

avatarI'd like to see a book published as a treatise against evolution, with each chapter taking one of the religious objections, then through the course of the chapter, the writer using logic and realising that s/he has made a mistake. Then moving onto the next chapter, only to realise, after using logic and facts, that yet again: wrong. Going through all the usual objections one by one, as a religious refuter of science, then coming to the conclusion that it's all bull, but in the tone of a believer. Now that's be funny. Difficult to do I'd imagine, but funny.

Alternately, finish off the lolcat bible and get it published. Light blue touch-paper. stand well back.

 avatarFrom bluebird's link:
...provides a theoretical structure for spirituality, supported by up-to-date scientific theory and experimental evidence drawn from physics, biology, neuro-endocrine chemistry and developmental genetics. It places these in a context that examines the nature of reality, perception, shamanistic experience and intuition and is further underpinned by strong experimental data that validates psychic detection, psychokinesis, plant communication and homeopathic medicine.

...There is also an overarching philosophical view that presents a fresh view of how human beings understand what is "real", giving a new and healthy context for approaches to live issues such as ecology, economy and socio-political attitudes, as well as exposing the weaknesses in scientific methodology which have caused it to ignore and dismiss important data.

...The picture that emerges brings scientific and spiritual views of the world into alignment and ends a long-term conflict which has damaged both, and which has caused many people to feel they must choose between two worlds. The resolution brings connectedness and empowerment, within an inspiring new view of who we all truly are.

So quite a book overall. We can expect it to be a huge bestseller which radically changes the paradigm in just about all fields of study. I'll pick up a copy when the paperback is at number one...

That spiral in the picture in the top right corner of the book cover has a pretty cool visual effect when you scroll it up and down on the screen.

That's the only comment worth making on this book.

EDIT: I'll make another comment anyway. Judging from the cover and title, I suspect that it is some form of argument from design, possibly about how very precise and complex geometrical shapes can't occur purely through natural selection; something Dawkins has specifically addressed in at least one of his books, although I can't remember which one at the moment.

...of course, one shouldn't judge a book by its cover, it's just some speculation.

 avatarWow! A new-age flea.

From the review by Howard Smith.

This book takes up the challenge to the religious and spiritual life posed by the publication of “The God Delusion” by Professor Richard Dawkins in 2006. However, it is not a full-frontal attack, with point-by-point refutation. Rather, the authors painstakingly build up a picture of the universe as a many-layered coherent living wholeness, in which consciousness, matter, information, and energy resonate and interweave in an unending spiral of self-creation.

avatarSo many attempts to answer atheism's case. If there were a simple ABC arguement for God (or any other religion's god(s)) then you would really need only one book. Clearly the bible isn't considered sufficient for christians. Each one of these books will no doubt emphasise the particular aspects that their author considers the clincher for god (the god of original cause, the personal voice in the head, the grandeur and fine tuning of the universe, 'cos the bible says it happened, etc, etc). Every christian seems to see it differently and that's before we consider the detailed differences in their specific dogmas (wars have been fought over them after all!).

And the attacks are on the 'New Atheism' - also often seen as militant athesim or fundementalist atheism(!). Although Richard Dawkins has done a fine job focussing the atheist arguments in his recent book they are hardly new. They've been around for ages and haven't been answered adequately over that time. I just love the way these 'fleas' give the appearance of believers running scared - which I think they are.
