Video Richard Dawkins at American Atheists 09

In my Atlanta talk, I briefly quoted the journalist Melanie Phillips, as a possible source of John Lennox's 'stunning revelation'. Unfortunately, I also attributed another, similar quotation to her, which was in fact from another blogger who had referred to her. This was inexplicably slipshod on my part. I apologise, and have asked Josh to remove the brief section of my talk where I spoke about Melanie Phillips.

Richard

Richard Dawkins at the American Atheists 2009 conference in Atlanta, Georgia. The talk is divided into four sections: 1. The Tony Blair Faith Foundation / 2. Mining the Eddington Concession / 3. God as Science Ficton / 4. Q&A on dealing with Creationists

avatarA very nice talk. One thing I like about Dawkins is that he isn't terribly canned. Hitchens gets repetitive rather quickly, but Harris and Dawkins often vary things up and keep it fresh.

This was a great lecture, it had some fresh stuff, which I love to see. Wish they had more time for questions though.

avatarToo bad he had to eliminate his part 4 discussion and cut short the Q & A. Another hour would have been fantastic.

It seems that RD is basing his 'belief' (his word) on the level of non-theistic sentiment in the US on personal observation. I also wish that there is at least a significant minority of people who are not theistic, but I have not seen studies with data to back it up. Can anyone point to such studies?

UPDATE: another thread "The Silent Minority" addresses this.

I hope I,m still around to see how it all turns out! In the meantime, I have this overwhelming urge to fast forward everything by shaking the delusion out of "the deluted". I find it very frustrating to witness, nonstop, the ignorance of people in the position of influence and leadership, like Bush and Blair,...I can't remember where I saw this lately, but the stats show that I.Q. goes down as the intensity of belief goes up. Well, take that for what it's worth.

I would be very happy to see someone who is a non-believer run for president of the U.S., and, engage in a highly knowledgable run for office...answering all the questions, showing all the evidence, bringing the secular cause to a new level. Ya, I know the chances of getting elected, but I think it is needed in a big way. Maybe the critical mass will get a big bust.

Good job by Richard as usual.

John Lennox has once again displayed that strange dichotomy of the religious. Namely the willingness to distort the truth, or in this case to simply tell lies, despite it being a deadly sin.

That's the kind of split brain feat that puzzles me. If he really believes this stuff, why be so ready to knowingly tell falsehoods. Sort makes you think he doesn't believe it himself. It really is strange.

avatarThanks for uploading. I've been looking forward to another video like this. Loved his response at the end, "NO!"

I especially liked the quote mining bit. I expected more from Lennox when I listened to that debate. I couldn't believe he would actually quote Acts 17:31. How does referring to the resurrection of Christ help him win a debate with Dawkins? Was that supposed to prove God's existence?

avatarI live in Atlanta and was present at this years 35th Annual American Atheists Convention - and was thrilled to hear Professor Dawkins speak at this event.

Unfortunately, those lucky few who had a chance to ask Professor Dawkins a question (in Part 4) didn't seem quite up to the intellectual challenge. The questions were mostly preambles (i.e. speeches) or completely off topic. Not one was worthwhile, IMHO.

To have squandered an opportunity to ask Professor Dawkins a meaningful question was painful to hear and very embarrassing.

Many thanks to Josh Timonen (and the RDF) for keeping up this website and providing intelligent content.

I just finished watching the "God Strikes Back" episodes. Excellent as always.
I find myself coming away quite often from these series totally frustrated feeling there must be more we can do to turn around the tide of creationist idiots from spewing their harmful nonsense.
Is it that they can’t fully let go of all their childhood myths? Is it they simply do not have the mental faculties to allow them to see reality? Is it that they are so biased their minds will forever be closed? What is it about these people that keep them in defiance of the obvious? So many questions, so few answers. That’s the crux of my frustration.

(SIR) Richard, once again displaying totally awesome stuff. R.D. gets more potent as he ages. His exploitation on quote miming was excellent....I only wish we could watch R.D. and all the FOUR HORSEMAN at work everyday...but that would be asking too much , as we all need time off...I will be creating ANOTHER petition on number ten downing street for R.D. to be knighted...Personally I think R.D. should be the leader of the world ,..but we know he would never take the job.....

Hey everyone, just wanted to say that I loved that video and that I would give anything to have RD come to St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada for a talk. We have a University here that would serve perfectly as a venue and then I could die a much happier person...perhaps I will contact the university myself to try to get them to invite him to speak. Pretty please, Richard???

Signs of hope in the U.S.

27% of poll respondents DON'T want a religious funeral.

And a Trinity College poll counted 70% as believing in God.Doesn't that raise the
non- and unsure- believer to 30% from
the reported 15%? (easy math)

In light of the comment
While I'm certain that Richard's use of the footage in his talk fully qualifies as "Fair Use" under US copyright law, we're going to play it safe and keep the Expelled footage out of our youtube version, since youtube is notorious for removing accounts (and all of a user's videos) and then (maybe) considering whether the copyright infringement claim was justified later

it may be worth noting that James Randi Foundation's channel is back online at "http://www.youtube.com/JamesRandiFoundation" as of April 3rd. As with many previous account suspensions, it was complaints over copyright violation, and the JRF removed the offending videos.

According to the JRF website
As you can see, no one was attacking us, and no one acted unfairly - the complainants were within their rights, and YouTube acted according to their rules. In fact, when we started conversing with one of the complainants and with YouTube, everyone acted in a civilized and even friendly manner. The matter was resolved quickly and, I think, to everyone's satisfaction.

I will also be posting Andy Thomson's talk from the AA conference. Unfortunately those are the only two that I filmed, but I think the rest will be available on DVD through AA. They had a separate filming setup.

avatarWe always complain about the creationists not understanding what a scientific theory is, especially with regards to evolution, but it is our lack of consistency in how we use the word that contributes to their misunderstanding. The idea that this universe is simply a bubble in a large foam of other universe bubbles is a not theory. It is simply a thought. This isn't the first time Dawkins has done this. When so many scientists throw the word around indiscriminately it is no wonder there is such a misunderstanding.
