avatarJanus, sorry about that. I've had some issues with avatars doing that on short, one or two line comments. It won't break anything, so as long as it doesn't drive you crazy don't worry about it. You can also hit return a couple of times to add in some blank lines to fill out the space. I went in and did this to your previous two comments as an example. -Josh.

avatarI'm very disappointed not to see "The Extended Dawkotype" on that Xmas gift list. It's certainly number one on mine!

I would be delighted to open up my present box and behold a brand new, shiny copy of The God Delusion.

avatarI think #1 and #9 are jabs at the New Scientist book "Does Anything Eat Wasps?", a book where they try to answer weird science questions from readers. Questions like "Could you live on beer alone?" or "Why is snot green?"

A bit sad to see "Climbing Mount Execrable" isn't on the list either. Or "Litter to a Schizoid Nation". 8)

Support this author, a true genius. Buy the books.

How come atheists have the best sense of humour?.

avatarDoes anyone have plans to give a copy of the God Delusion as a gift on Xmas to a believer at all? I hear it said to send the book as a gift but wonder if anyone has done or is going too. I just see most people right from the start of page one that are God Believers to start bashing it. Maybe the Movie would have more of an impact :)

How about starting a campaign to leave copies of it in hotel bedrooms a la Gideon?

avatarPlease God I would like for Christmas a sexy young man to give my bottom a good caning and while you are at it God, tell Richard to tell me if my sexuality is due to genes, memes, or pure bloody mindedness!

I suspect the references to "Is God/Richard Dawkins Shit?" are from another bestseller ... "Is it Just Me Or Is Everything Shit?" (Volumes 1 and 2). I got my Private Eye in the post yesterday and hadn't opened it yet ... from various comments heard on "Have I Got News For You" it would appear Ian Hislop doesn't have much time or use for religion either.

Re: #11760 by Mark R

I think that Harris's "Letter to a Christian Nation" and http://godisimaginary.com are much better suited to grabbing the attention of a luke warn Christian or fence-sitter than TGI. The former (book) very succinctly and effectively argues for the urgency of exposing and casting off Christianity. The latter (site) has 50 short arguments against Christianity, including about 7 short videos. In my opinion, TGI would be great for the same class of people if they have a good aptitude and openness for technical argumentation, but otherwise is more appropriate for people who already appreciate the arguments against Christianity.

avatarI have Read " The Creation " by E.O.Wilson and that might also do a the trick for a christian to see a different view. Wilson writes a letter to a pastor from his home town and does a good job of weaving in his points to the letter without being over powering which might appeal to someone who is a luke warm christian

I think that the Wilson book is effective at it's goal of engendering a non-religious appreciation of the wonders of nature, and (less so) of encouraging people to care about the maintenance of said nature.

In my experience, Harris's book is much more effective at attracting new Atheists because its goal is to grab the reader with the many great and immediate dangers of Christianity. The physical length and non-challenging text of the book are also very effective enticements. I know of several "non readers" who would never have started reading it if it were not so short, and who read it to the end only because it is so easy a read.

Of course, the book is too small to address issues in great detail, or too cover very many issues, but IMO it is a great virtue to avoid detracting from the point by straying too far from it, and to keep the beginner's interest by avoiding too much detail.

avatarI bought the God Delusion and a Sam Harris book before I realized that my atheist dad had never heard of them. He's getting them for "Christmas" tomorrow. ;-)
