avatarI do hope the new web site is a lot better designed than this atrocious survey.

Which of the following social networking sites do you use?

Answer: none. Oh, no box to tick. But ticking a box is compulsory! So I haven't done the survey because it won't let me!

Sorry Admin, you've just scored 0/10 for your HCI.

8. Comment #431183 by RightWingAtheist on November 11, 2009 at 8:35 pm

avatarIt doesn't make much sense that "other" and "none" are the same answer for the phone question. Unless you are planning phone-specific apps and already ruled out S60-based Nokias and proprietary platforms which are Java-enabled.

9. Comment #431187 by Imroy on November 11, 2009 at 8:38 pm

Done. So many questions about social websites that I either avoid like the plague or haven't even heard of. What are you planning on doing to the website? How about you fix the basics, like having a login method that doesn't rely on a cookie to figure out which page to return to and consequently gets mixed up when you have multiple tabs open to the site.

Back to the survey - why no love for all the smart and semi-smart mobile phones that can run JavaME/J2ME apps? There's got to be several billion of them out there in the world. The ones in the list are getting all the hype nowadays but still make up only a very small proportion of the market.

11. Comment #431192 by Lucas on November 11, 2009 at 8:55 pm

avatarThis was my comment at the end, having clicked "none" almost every time.

"Sorry guys, I think all that social networking stuff is just stupid and self-obsessed (and I'm only 31). I very reluctantly have a Facebook page, and it is extremely simplified. I won't even go so far as to join RDF on Facebook. Twitter, to me, is about as useful as creationism, and almost as harmful to our collective psyche. I like the site as it is quite a lot. But do what you will, I trust you know what you're doing."

12. Comment #431197 by gr8hands on November 11, 2009 at 9:14 pm

They need the "none" option for the first question, as I have none. Not "other", but none. It wouldn't allow me to submit without an answer there. Tsk, tsk.

13. Comment #431218 by mordacious1 on November 11, 2009 at 9:51 pm

avatarBummer, I only use "Sit-on-MyFace.com" and it wasn't listed.

Really, I don't and probably won't use any social networking sites. I agree with Imroy that there are some things that could be fixed on this site that it currently provides (or used to). I liked it, for example, when all the posts gave the time in my local time. Now all the time-posts are in the time-zone of Vladivostok. Maybe that's just my browser, but it started when the site was down for awhile. Also, I liked it when you got an email notice when someone PM'd you.

I know people will use these services. Some people who were rabid posters in the past do not post much here anymore, they just talk to each other on Facebook. Perhaps, if the sites were linked, it would bring these posters back, probably not Al Rawandi though.

Done survey. Don't do social networking (though I'm vaguely on goodreads.com) - this site already eats all my cybertime!

20. Comment #431256 by BeyondBelief on November 12, 2009 at 12:25 am

avatarI have to concur... the social networking questions are largely irrelevant, when this site is missing SO many opportunities to network the people here better:
--email when P.M'ed
--threaded comments, so you can easily follow replies.
--ability to assess your own "ranking" by fellow atheists. Am I "adored" or "trolled".

As for Mr. Pickwick's question if he's the only sicko checking the site 42 (a Doug Adams quantity) times a day... get in line, bud!!

If you don't like social networking, don't do it- it's not obligatory, but there is nothing wrong with options.

22. Comment #431271 by Lisa Bauer on November 12, 2009 at 2:29 am

avatarI've done the survey, too. Looking forward to the new site design.

One point I mentioned: is it possible to get a mobile-friendly site? I often visit this site on my iPhone (because I'm sad and pathetic that way!), and while it works, all the stuff on the front page can take quite a while to load.

23. Comment #431273 by njwong on November 12, 2009 at 2:49 am

avatarActually, I thought it rather strange that this site survey is placed under the "Latest News" category, where it will rapidly slither down and disappear from view as newer articles are posted.

If the purpose is to survey the current/registered members, it makes more sense to send an email to them and ask them to take part in the survey. The survey URL doesn't have to be published publicly.

By posting the survey under "Latest News", this survey "appears" to be also directed at casual visitors who have not registered with the site. Since this can cause public/non-registered users to participate in the survey, it can skew results. For example, whenever one of those Creationist web sites do a web poll, the results are completely skewed by us to our favour when we learn of it :-)

If public/non-registered users feedback is being solicited, then this topic should be listed under the "Featured" category, which should keep the survey prominently featured for a longer while for the public/non-registered visitors.

I second the iPhone friendly website.. or maybe, if it's not crossing the line, an app?

And then we could say: 'There's an app for that'. And there would be much rejoicing.

avatarChill people - this is just the start. I have spoken to some of the people in the background and they are all well aware of the problems and how things could be improved. The difficulty is in deciding which features are important and which are a waste of time and resources to maintain. There is a lot which can be done to make this site even more awesome than it is, but even with an unlimited budget and the most brilliant talent it takes time to implement.

I have faith (hack) in the admin gods.

avatarSocial networking ? Sorry, can't be bothered. It takes enough of my time to monitor THIS site and various news sites. Mobile phone ? Nah. Turned mine off. Too expensive (in Canada) for me. $25 for pay-as-you-go, gets me two months. I might make ten calls in that period. $2.50 per call is ridiculous. I hardly miss it. One of my objections was that current mobile phones are so complex in terms of "rich function" they become unintelligible to those who have a different brand. When my wife gives me her phone, and says "YOU call them, I am busy driving", I decline. WAY too difficult to find a stored number in her phone. Surfing the web on a phone ? Maybe if I were still employed in a high-tech industry, but now that I am retired, it is much easier to walk to the nearest full-size computer.

(returns to cave)

Phew!

I filled in the form before reading any of the comments and was a little discombobulated by how much of a luddite I felt by the end of it...and then I read the comments.

Thank you RDF users.

It is no problem 'coming out' as rational thinker, taking responsibility for one's own philosophical standpoint with integrity and with understanding of the potential fallibility of our evolved intellect - especially in the light of the rigorous and humble approach taken by our religious counterparts - but to dare to admit of disregarding the 'social-networkers' is indeed to welcome, embrace and to passionately and inappropriately toy with the genitals of social norms. Reason prevails. Thanks again.

How can you get through the day if you don't know what Lance Armstrong and Stephen Fry had for breakfast ?

Actually I started lurking on Twitter during the Tour de France as you got the direct coverage from the riders. Better than waiting for the media to repeat what had just been said on Twitter.

Did the survey, and just wanted to add here:
Content and commenting are the most important issues to me.
(And by the way, thanks to the Admin for all the work, most things work very well here, which is why I check this site every couple of hours.)

Phone apps, RSS, and interfacing with social networking sites aren't important to me.
