Its just a shame they are not accepted by the lay population and that superstition still rules in many countries.

avatarBoy, that was excellent. I have seen Richard Dawkins lecture in person and I much prefer when he is being interviewed, because his words freely flow so eloquently, rather than having to check notes and pick up in the middle of sentences and such. He is such a brilliant man. I totally agree with him about what a sad impoverished life one leads if they don't know anything about evolution, because it is so exciting and thrilling.

I liked the interviewer's voice. Not sure if it's weird that it was the one thing I took with me from that interview...

avatarI completely agree that the truth is much more exciting than the whole Goddidit thing. I went to the Museum of Natural History in NYC with someone I met at the Dawkins event at B&N. As we were looking at the intermediate fossils (yes, Wendy, they are there!) we both remarked that this is a hell of a lot more exciting than anything religion could have ever come up with.

I also think that evolution has more relevance in our day to day lives than one would suspect(not just with viruses either). For instance, why exercise is good for the brain is rooted in evolution (fight or flight response, running from predators, releasing endorphins, etc.). That kind of understanding has helped me in my own life during tough times. People today are more depressed than ever, and some scientists say it's due to lack of exercise.

The cloudfiles MP3 link shouldn't cause you any trouble. I haven't tried the Air America link to see if it works. Is that what is demanding a subscription?

Thanks, yes, the MP3 link has worked and I'm listening now.
It was the Air America link that asked me for money.

avatarI think it's sad that Lionel seemed to have a better notion of why evolution matters (to normal people) then Richard Dawkins does. If he wants to convince people he really neeeds to remember the question is 'why should *they* care' not 'why *does* he care'.

Question: Why should the average joe care?

Bad answer: Because it's interesting, and rather sad if you don't know about it.

Good answer: Because it might save his life next time he goes to hospital.

Another good answer: Understanding why evolution is right and creationism is wrong (eg: understanding the ballony detection kit) will help you spot liars.

An analogy: The average joe doesn't care about engineering, until he's in a car accident and suddenly it's vitally important to him that the seatbelt, airbag, and crumple zone were designed correctly according to the rules of science and engineering - and not rendered ineffective and useless by various kinds of political interferance and wish fulfilment.
