avatarIt's all true, of course, but this is the first Pat Condell video I've listened to which made me begin to wonder if his fervour isn't beginning to obscure his famous good humour - to the detriment of the message...

OH MI GOSH! Freedom of speech sacred?! It has finally been admitted! Atheism is just another religion and the new atheists are funadmentalists!

Anyway, it's been said before, but Pat Condell puts it extra nicely as we've come to expect. I had no idea I was so intolerant.

The part about Jerusalem could almost have been written by a foulmouthed and strident Shakespeare.

avatarI think atheists have a right to be aggressive and strident.

Although I don't believe emotion is helpful in argument, we certainly have good reasons to be angry at religion and there's no need to apologize for it.

avatarReligious people always feel like they themselves are being attacked when someone is criticizing religion. I think it's weird that the human mind is capable of dealing with the same thing (in this case, ultimately, the structure of reality) with such rationalization and with so much personally invested in it. And not realising that one so affects the other. Not that rationalizing is rational, but that's the rational part of the religious outrage.

Oh yeah, and Pat is so cool. ;)

avatarI was again cheated out of my fun today – the opportunity to be an aggressive atheist.

Jehovah’s Witnesses or some such group were touring the village. Again they missed me out. I have in the past given them a hard time when they tried to sell their wares so I guess they have realised that they have more than met their match so unfortunately don’t call nowadays. I really miss the entertainment.

avatarI normally can't stand Pat Condell, and have said so often. But this was different. It was passionate, accurate, and quite moving in places. This wasn't a rant - it was an inspiring speech.

If he carries on like this, I am prepared to have my mind changed about him.

avatarCurious the different reactions we folks have to Pat. For my part, Pat was spot on in this one, but humourless, less than usually fluent, and it was largely abstract rhetoric. I reckon he's more fun when he's dealing with something topical and concrete - he could usefully take a pop at the catholics right now...

I too had Jehovah's at the door today. I just told 'em to forget it and shut the door; can't be arsed. Kinda disturbing though: a bloke of about 40, his middle-aged friend and his infant son in a pram. What sorta childhood's that?

avatar"I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice! And let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue!"

My problem with religion was never that it wasn't soft-headed, and in fact all of us have criticized the stupidity of religious moderation. The problem with religion is that it is WRONG.

avatarWell done to the stridently polemical Pat.

I always spare no time when I find out he has put out another youTube vid, and would really like to see Pat come and join us convicts in the festivities of the AU Rise of Atheism Convention march 2010 in Melbourne.

'Agressive atheism is really a defensive atheism for fending off political religion.' I don't think atheists would need to be aggressive or defensive if religion was benign.

"This god is my satan! When I hear his name, I smell sulphur, when I hear his words, I smell death!" LOL that is great! strident? yes!

"Jerusalem, that jewel in the desert, that celestial piss hole in the sand" - I'm sure some eyebrows will be raised here.

Pat comes up with the best comments! "[Religion], its about as substantial as a meringue, all front and no substance" - that would be great to say to a J Dub with his foot in my door.

Pat has said some things in the past which many of us would surely disagree with. There was one video in which he strongly criticised those who would debate with religious people. And yet all of the "four horsemen" of New Atheism have taken part in such debates. So, he has said some bizarre things.

I have generally disapproved of what I thought were his poorly targeted attacks in the past. I thought that they were cliched and added nothing to the promotion of atheism.

However, there is something about this video that is different. It seems to me more like a carefully prepared speech than a comedy rant. There were so many phrases, so many sound-bites that hit the target.

They were never like comedy rants though. I doubt that he intended them to be funny (and they are not)

 avatarMatthew 10:15
Amen, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.
This is the bible verse that is supposed to show that Christians accept homosexuality and clarifies that they are not racists? I don't see it (because it's not there).
This is the first I have heard of Pat, and I have to say that I am impressed.

37. Comment #436289 by Laurie Fraser on November 29, 2009 at 4:51 am

avatarPat's becoming like Lenny Bruce in his last days, with one great exception. Whereas Bruce gave away comedy for morbid, paranoid rants fuelled by his depression and drugs, Pat has given away comedy for incisive, brilliant polemic fuelled by (can I say "righteous") anger. And this piece is brilliant - almost poetic in its language. It's the fiercest thing he's done, I think.

Pat at his very best - how can he top this one? The Jerusalem reference was superb as was his assertion that faith is nothing more than pious ignorance (I think he has used this definition before, but never to such good effect). I agree with Laurie Fraser, almost poetic.

avatarSteve Zara, can you direct us to the video where he says he would not debate faith heads ? I was just thinking how great it would be to see him debate with Dinesh D'Souza.

I too wondered why this video was not focused on the recent reports coming out of Ireland. Perhaps he will get to that, soon.

I strongly disagreed with Condell about what he said, but that won't stop me saying how much I admire this magnificent new video.

I am not sure a video from him about catholic child abuse is what I want to see. I would rather see him confront one of those in authority in the Catholic church in person.

This was a good video from Pat and it may well increase public awareness but it won't have much effect in real terms. This is nothing against Pat Condell; I'm convinced that no amount of ranting however accurate and convincing by anyone - including world-famous personalities - will ever bring about the changes necessary.

The number of god-believers still vastly outnumber non-believers and vote-whore politicians will always pander to religion, even if only a few percent of voters were religious they would still be "included" by politicians who do the "right thing" (that's the right thing for them of course, not us). In countries with state-sponsored religion there is no hope for secularists.

Sadly, although religion keeps making a fool of itself and is slowly losing, I fear it will take a long time yet before we can rid ourselves of it.

 avatarPat says something like:
" No amount of windbaggery or flim flam from the clergy can disguise the fact that there's nothing there".

How true! I can almost hear Alistair McGrath howling "I am not a windbag, I'm a theologian", as he sinks another glass of fine claret at an Oxford banquet.

No wonder the atheists get attacked; the religios have nothing positive to say themselves.
